Pokémon Winds vs Pokémon Waves differences are still mostly unknown. The Pokémon Company has confirmed that the main character’s outfit changes between the two versions, but it hasn’t announced separate exclusive Pokémon or Legendary mascots. Both games are coming worldwide in 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2.
If you’re planning to buy one version, that isn’t much to base your decision on just yet. The names hint at wind and ocean themes, but they don’t establish how the stories, encounters or maps might differ. Here’s the official comparison so far, without turning guesses into answers.
Pokémon Winds vs Pokémon Waves: confirmed differences
The confirmed difference is the outfit worn by your playable character. Pokémon’s announcement shows both looks and explicitly says that the clothing depends on which game you choose. The new island setting and three starter Pokémon, meanwhile, have been introduced as part of both adventures.

This is only an early Pokémon Winds vs Pokémon Waves comparison, not a complete feature list. Unannounced exclusives shouldn’t be treated as either confirmed or ruled out. Those details could be revealed later, but no complete list has been published.
Are the player outfits different?
Yes. The outfits in the official announcement are version-specific. Pokémon hasn’t shown the full range of clothing customisation, so it remains unclear whether you can unlock other outfits during the adventure or swap into the opposite version’s default look.
The player’s appearance is one concrete reason to prefer one version today. Our main characters guide covers the protagonists introduced in the first trailer.
Pokémon Winds vs Pokémon Waves version-exclusive Pokémon
No official version-exclusive Pokémon list has been announced. Paired Pokémon games have often used exclusive species to distinguish the two versions, but previous releases can’t tell us which Pokémon will be exclusive this time.
Browt, Pombon and Gecqua are the confirmed Grass-, Fire- and Water-type first partners for the new adventure. Pokémon hasn’t said that one of these starters is locked to Winds or Waves. Nor has it confirmed whether any of the returning species seen in the trailer will appear in only one game.
Our Pokédex guide lists Pokémon identified in official promotional material without pretending that their version availability is already established.
Will there be different Legendary Pokémon?
The announcement didn’t reveal Legendary mascots for Pokémon Winds or Pokémon Waves. That means nobody can yet compare the box Legendaries, exclusive story battles or their types.
The two special Pikachu, Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu, are officially named characters with distinctive appearances. Pokémon hasn’t identified them as Legendary Pokémon, nor confirmed that each is restricted to the matching game.
A Legendary reveal could eventually become the biggest Pokémon Winds vs Pokémon Waves difference for players deciding which one to buy. At present, there’s nothing official to compare.
Will the region, story or exploration change between versions?
Both games are being presented as adventures in the same newly revealed setting: an open world with windswept islands, a vast ocean and distinctive Pokémon ecosystems. Pokémon says various species will help trainers overcome obstacles and forces of nature.
Nothing shown establishes separate maps, exclusive islands or different travel abilities. It’s possible that future announcements will add version-specific details, but the names Winds and Waves alone don’t demonstrate different movement systems.

Pokémon Winds vs Pokémon Waves: which should you buy?

With only the player outfits confirmed as different, there isn’t a reliable gameplay reason to recommend one version over the other. Choose whichever title and outfit appeals to you, or hold off until Pokémon explains the exclusive content.
If you’re waiting for a particular Legendary, version-specific wild Pokémon or story difference, those announcements haven’t happened. Both games also lack an official pre-order opening date and confirmed retail price.
The release-date article has the 2027 launch information, and the pre-orders guide explains the current ordering situation.
What remains to be announced?
A complete Pokémon Winds vs Pokémon Waves comparison will need the exclusive-Pokémon lists, possible Legendary mascots, story differences and details of any unique characters or locations. None of those has been established by the first trailer.
For now, the Pokémon Winds vs Pokémon Waves choice is genuinely open. The official Pokémon Winds and Waves website confirms the clothing difference and a worldwide Nintendo Switch 2 launch in 2027, but there’s no reason to pretend the missing features have already been revealed.
