Pokémon Winds and Waves gameplay takes the main series to a new open world filled with windswept islands, a vast ocean and Pokémon living in their own ecosystems. The games were announced in February 2026 for a simultaneous worldwide release in 2027, exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2.
The first trailer tells us quite a bit about the setting and the Pokémon you’ll meet, but it doesn’t explain every system. If you’re wondering how exploration, battles or co-op will work, here’s what has been confirmed and what the announcement leaves open.
What is Pokémon Winds and Waves gameplay like?

The official description makes open-world exploration the centre of the new adventure. You’ll travel through a region of islands and sea, encountering Pokémon that live among different environments. Pokémon describes these habitats as unique ecosystems.
Another confirmed idea is working alongside Pokémon outside of battles. The official website says different Pokémon will help trainers get past difficult paths and forces of nature. That’s a specific promise about exploration, although the controls and individual abilities haven’t been shown.
Pokémon Winds and Waves gameplay footage doesn’t yet establish a quest structure, Gym order or full battle system. The announcement is an introduction to the world rather than a complete demonstration of its mechanics.
Is the new Pokémon game open world?
Yes. The Pokémon Company explicitly calls Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves open-world games. The landscape features multiple islands surrounded by a large ocean, with different Pokémon ecosystems spread across the setting.
That doesn’t automatically mean every island is reachable from the beginning. Pokémon hasn’t published a complete map or explained whether story progression, traversal abilities or other obstacles control access to different places.
The open-world guide looks more closely at the known geography, while the region article covers the setting and its still-unannounced name.
Can you travel across the ocean?

The ocean is one of the biggest visual elements in the Pokémon Winds and Waves gameplay reveal. Official descriptions mention glittering waves that ebb and flow, and the island setting makes moving across water an obvious question.
But Pokémon hasn’t confirmed boats, free swimming, underwater exploration or a particular ride-Pokémon system. The first announcement also doesn’t explain how you’ll reach each island or whether you can travel wherever you like.
So the ocean is confirmed as part of the new setting, while the precise movement mechanics remain unknown. Descriptions of specific sailing or diving abilities aren’t supported by the announcement.
How do Pokémon help you explore?
The Pokémon Winds and Waves gameplay announcement says trainers can team up with different Pokémon to tackle difficult roads and even forces of nature. That is a meaningful detail: Pokémon aren’t being described only as battle partners.
What we haven’t seen is a list of helper Pokémon, the abilities they offer or whether the feature resembles earlier ride systems and hidden moves. The phrase ‘forces of nature’ appears in the official description, but it doesn’t identify a particular weather hazard or boss encounter.
A trailer scene may suggest different possibilities, but those shouldn’t become instructions for mechanics that haven’t been explained. It’s more useful to keep the confirmed promise separate from theories about how it might work.
Which starter Pokémon can you choose?

Browt, Pombon and Gecqua are the first partner Pokémon introduced for both games. Browt is a Grass-type Bean Chick Pokémon with Overgrow, Pombon is a Fire-type Puppy Pokémon with Blaze, and Gecqua is a Water-type Water Gecko Pokémon with Torrent.
Pokémon has provided each starter’s personality, height and weight, but not their evolution lines or full stats. Our starter guide compares the confirmed details without predicting the strongest final evolution.
The trailer also features Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu, two special Pikachu whose role in the adventure is still unannounced. You can see the returning Pokémon identified so far in the Pokédex checklist.
How do battles work in Pokémon Winds and Waves?
Pokémon hasn’t fully explained the new battle system. Traditional turn-based combat is familiar to the series, but the announcement doesn’t provide enough information to verify exactly how battles will work in these games.
It also hasn’t announced online battle rules, ranked play or competitive formats. Our turn-based battles guide separates what is known from assumptions drawn from older games.
Does Pokémon Winds and Waves gameplay include co-op?
Shared-world co-op hasn’t been announced. Nintendo lists one player on a single console, and the official exploration description refers to Pokémon helping the trainer rather than friends joining each other’s worlds.
That leaves online trading, battles and cooperative exploration unanswered. Our co-op article explains the current player information and why it doesn’t confirm a Union Circle-style system.
What can we expect before the 2027 release?
The biggest missing Pokémon Winds and Waves gameplay details are the battle rules, full region map, traversal controls, available Pokémon and online functions. None has a confirmed reveal date yet.
For now, Pokémon Winds and Waves gameplay is established as an open-world island adventure in which Pokémon can help trainers navigate natural obstacles. The official game website has the announcement and footage, and our release-date guide covers the worldwide 2027 launch.
