Pokémon Winds and Waves special Pikachu are Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu, two familiar-looking faces with new outfits revealed alongside Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves. The Pokémon Company has named both on its official game website, but it hasn’t explained how they’ll fit into the adventure.
Their introduction leaves some obvious questions. Are they exclusive to different versions? Can you catch them, and are they new species or simply Pikachu wearing different clothes? The February 2026 reveal answers some of those questions, while others are still open.
Who are the Pokémon Winds and Waves special Pikachu?
The two are officially named Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu. They aren’t fan nicknames for Pokémon glimpsed in the background: the official website gives them their own introduction as special Pikachu.
Both have distinctive outfits, and their names reflect the themes of the paired games. Pokémon hasn’t explained the clothes, shared a story role or said where players might encounter them. For now, the Pokémon Winds and Waves special Pikachu have confirmed names and appearances, but no announced unlock methods.
Is Mr. Windychu exclusive to Pokémon Winds?
The name Mr. Windychu sounds as though it belongs in Pokémon Winds, but that isn’t confirmation of exclusivity. Pokémon hasn’t announced that he’ll be absent from Pokémon Waves or that players must choose a particular version to meet him.
One version difference is established: the main character’s outfit changes depending on whether you play Winds or Waves. Pokémon hasn’t published a comparable list of exclusive species or characters. That means there’s no reliable basis for assigning Mr. Windychu to only one game.
If you’re choosing which version to buy, our Pokémon Winds vs Pokémon Waves comparison explains what’s actually confirmed. The Pokémon Winds and Waves special Pikachu shouldn’t influence that choice just yet.
Is Ms. Wavychu exclusive to Pokémon Waves?
Ms. Wavychu’s name points towards the ocean theme of Pokémon Waves. Even so, her version availability is as unclear as Mr. Windychu’s. The announcement doesn’t identify any island where she’ll appear or say whether both characters can feature in one playthrough.
There are also no confirmed version-exclusive Legendary Pokémon or full encounter lists. Those details could change how players compare the two games, but the first reveal hasn’t supplied them.
Both Pokémon Winds and Waves special Pikachu could be important to the story, or they might appear in another capacity. Anything more specific would be guessing.
Can you catch Pokémon Winds and Waves special Pikachu?
No catching or unlock method has been announced for Mr. Windychu or Ms. Wavychu. The official materials don’t explain whether they’re wild encounters, gifts, story characters or something else.
Pokémon games have featured special-looking Pikachu before, but there’s no reason to assume these two work like a previous event Pokémon. Neither has a confirmed distribution, gift code or quest tied to its appearance.
The only first partner choices announced for the new games are Browt, Pombon and Gecqua. Their types, Abilities and descriptions are in our starter Pokémon guide. Neither special Pikachu has been introduced as a fourth starter.
Are the special Pikachu new Pokémon or regional forms?
Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu were introduced as special Pikachu, not separate species. There are no announced Pokédex numbers, regional forms or additional types for them.
An ordinary Pikachu is an Electric-type Pokémon. That alone doesn’t establish whether these characters have different moves, Abilities or battle statistics. Pokémon hasn’t detailed their attacks, or even said whether either can evolve into Raichu.
The Pokémon Winds and Waves special Pikachu should therefore not be counted as two newly discovered species. You can see the announced starters and returning Pokémon identified in official footage in our Pokédex checklist.
What role will these special Pikachu play in the story?
That’s still unknown. The games take place in an open world of windswept islands and a vast ocean, and Pokémon has said that trainers will team up with different Pokémon to overcome difficult terrain and forces of nature.
Nothing in the announcement connects those exploration abilities specifically to Mr. Windychu or Ms. Wavychu. Their names fit the game’s wind and water themes, but that isn’t evidence of weather powers or a special travel mechanic.
The Pokémon Winds and Waves special Pikachu have been given a prominent introduction, which makes them worth keeping an eye on. Their roles in the story and any possible encounters are waiting for another official reveal.
When will we learn more about Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu?
Pokémon hasn’t announced a date for a follow-up presentation about the characters. Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are currently scheduled for a simultaneous worldwide release in 2027, exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2.
For now, the two Pokémon Winds and Waves special Pikachu have confirmed names, designs and an official introduction, but not confirmed availability, battle mechanics or version exclusivity. Our release-date guide covers the launch information, and the official game website shows the characters as Pokémon introduced them.
