Permafrost multiplayer and co-op supports one to four players online. You can survive alone or team up with as many as three friends in the same frozen open world.
Co-op is built into the Early Access version from the start, with players able to divide responsibilities, build shelter networks and play around different strengths.

Permafrost multiplayer and co-op: player count
Permafrost multiplayer and co-op supports a maximum of four players online. That means one host plus up to three friends can share the same survival experience without waiting for a separate multiplayer update.
Permafrost multiplayer and co-op: solo play
Permafrost multiplayer and co-op is optional. Steam lists single-player separately from online co-op, so players who prefer solitary survival can explore, craft, hunt and build without needing a group.
Permafrost multiplayer and co-op: shared roles
Permafrost multiplayer and co-op lets players divide work across gathering, exploration, shelter construction and protection. More people provide more hands, but the cold and resource pressure remain active for the whole group.
Permafrost multiplayer and co-op: Early Access support
Permafrost multiplayer and co-op is already implemented in the Early Access build. The developer notes describe online co-op for up to four players as fully functional alongside the other core survival systems.
Permafrost multiplayer and co-op: local multiplayer
Permafrost multiplayer and co-op is currently listed as online rather than local or split-screen. Couch co-op should therefore not be assumed unless SpaceRocket Games announces local support later.
Permafrost multiplayer and co-op: dog companion
Permafrost multiplayer and co-op does not make the dog companion irrelevant. The dog can still scout, warn of danger and carry supplies, which adds utility whether you are travelling alone or with three friends.
Permafrost is a story-driven open-world survival sandbox set on a frozen near-future Earth after a chain of catastrophes culminates in the shattering of the moon. You play as a Rook, an engineer drawn into the wasteland by a radio signal from a long-lost friend, which gives exploration a narrative purpose rather than making survival the only goal.
The cold is a constant threat. Frostbite, storms and exposure affect how far you can travel, so shelter, route planning and supplies are part of normal progression. The world mixes ruined cities, wilderness and faction-controlled territory, which means different routes can carry different risks even before combat starts.
Exploration drives progression. Restoring abandoned shelters, repairing broken machinery and reclaiming technology lets you push deeper into the map. Your dog companion can scout ahead, warn of danger and carry supplies, making it a practical survival tool rather than a cosmetic follower.
SpaceRocket Games says the Early Access build already includes several biomes, hundreds of items, building blueprints, crafting recipes, the opening of the story, side quests and online co-op for up to four players. The launch is therefore a substantial work-in-progress build rather than a small technical preview.
The developer expects Early Access to last at least 12 months. During that period it plans to add more biomes, quests, NPCs, enemies, equipment, vehicles, quality-of-life features and technical optimisation, with community feedback shaping how the game develops toward version 1.0.
Permafrost multiplayer and co-op: launch context
Because Permafrost is entering Early Access, some details can still change after October 9. The current Steam page and developer notes are the correct baseline for launch coverage, while older preview information should be checked before publication.
The Click’s Permafrost cluster also covers release timing, platforms, Early Access, multiplayer and co-op and PC requirements. Each page targets a separate player question.
More useful Permafrost context
Permafrost puts survival pressure on movement as much as combat. A long journey can fail because of weather, exposure or poor shelter planning even when enemies are not the main problem, so preparation matters before leaving a safe location.
More useful Permafrost context
The open world is designed around a network of shelters rather than one permanent base. Rebuilding locations across the map creates safer routes into harder regions and gives recovered technology a direct role in progression.
More useful Permafrost context
SpaceRocket Games is also using community feedback as part of development. That makes the Early Access launch a starting point for iteration rather than a finished ruleset that will stay unchanged for the next year.
