Overwatch Unvaulted Passes: How Old Battle Passes Work

overwatch season 5 official

Overwatch Unvaulted Passes solve a problem returning players have had for years: old Battle Pass progression normally disappeared when a season ended, even if you had already put substantial time into it. Season 5 changes that by bringing revised versions of Seasons 1 through 15 back into the progression system. The important word is revised, because these are not exact copies of every original reward track.

The system is also designed to coexist with the current season rather than compete with it. Previous progress can carry forward, one Unvaulted track can receive XP beside the active Battle Pass, and acquired passes do not expire. Those rules make the feature far more flexible than a short rerun, but they also create a few choices players should understand before selecting which old season to revisit first.

Overwatch Unvaulted Passes bring revised Battle Passes from Seasons 1 through 15 back into play. If you made progress on the original version, you pick up from that progress rather than automatically starting again at the beginning. Blizzard also confirms that progress earned on the old free track carries forward.

That means Overwatch Unvaulted Passes are tied to your account history. A player who reached a high tier during the original season can be much closer to eligible returning Premium rewards than somebody who barely played that season, even if both acquire the same Unvaulted Pass now.

You can progress an old pass and Season 5 together

One active Unvaulted Pass can gain progression at the same time as the current Battle Pass. XP earned through normal play contributes to both tracks, so Overwatch Unvaulted Passes do not require you to choose between current seasonal progression and an older reward path.

This is the most useful rule to act on immediately. Before a long set of matches, make sure the old pass you actually care about is selected. If you are going to earn the XP anyway, there is little reason to leave a less useful Unvaulted track active by accident.

Previous progress is not reset

Overwatch Unvaulted Passes preserve previous progress, including free-track progress from the original season. If you later acquire the revised Premium track, eligible Premium rewards can unlock through the levels you had already reached. You are not being asked to repeat the same old grind from zero simply because the pass has returned.

This makes it worth checking several seasons before committing to one. Your favourite cosmetic may sit on a pass where you already have substantial progress, while another attractive season could require much more work. The menu should show the current account state more accurately than memory.

What happens after you finish one

When an active Unvaulted Pass is completed, Blizzard says it will automatically roll into the next available pass unless you choose another yourself. Overwatch Unvaulted Passes therefore keep old progression moving without requiring a manual selection every time a track finishes.

Automatic rollover is convenient, but it is not always optimal. If you have a specific Legendary or other eligible cosmetic in mind, select that pass manually after finishing the current one. Otherwise you may spend several sessions progressing a season that is lower on your personal list.

Unvaulted Passes do not expire after acquisition

Once acquired, Overwatch Unvaulted Passes remain permanently available on your account. They are not restricted to the Season 5 calendar and do not disappear when A Grim Doctrine ends. That removes the usual pressure to finish an entire pass before a seasonal deadline.

Permanent access is particularly valuable for players juggling Mystery Madness, competitive play and current Battle Pass goals. You can secure an old track you want and continue it later rather than allowing a limited October event to dictate how you spend every play session.

What the revised passes leave out

The returning tracks exclude several old reward categories. Overwatch Unvaulted Passes do not include Overwatch Coins, XP Boosts, Mythic Prisms, Prestige Titles, or Mythic Hero and Weapon skins. Those exclusions are part of the system itself, not a temporary launch limitation.

Because of that, choose an Unvaulted Pass from its current reward list rather than an archived screenshot of the original Battle Pass. A season can still be worth revisiting for eligible skins and cosmetics, but an excluded Mythic or currency reward should not be part of your calculation.

How to choose your first Unvaulted Pass

The best first choice is usually the Overwatch Unvaulted Passes track where three things line up: you want the eligible rewards, you have useful carried progress and you expect to keep playing enough to finish the remaining levels. A famous old season is not automatically the best option for your account.

Check your ownership before committing. If you already own most of the interesting cosmetics from one season, another pass may deliver more new value. If one track is nearly complete from its original run, it may be an efficient way to collect a missing reward while still advancing Season 5.

How Unvaulted Passes fit the new Battle Pass system

Overwatch Unvaulted Passes sit beside the revamped current Battle Pass, which lets players prioritise Legendary skins and use an eligible Swap Pool. The two systems share progression time but have different reward rules. Current-season Mythic Prisms remain on the active Battle Pass, while the old revised track focuses on eligible returning content.

Treating the systems separately prevents most confusion. Use the Season 5 Battle Pass for current rewards and Prism progression, then use one selected Unvaulted Pass for an older cosmetic goal. Because both can advance from the same XP, the feature is at its best when it adds a second useful reward track without changing how you normally play.

Overwatch Unvaulted Passes work best when you treat them as permanent background progression. Pick the old track you genuinely care about, let current-season play advance both systems and switch manually when another pass becomes the better target. Because Overwatch Unvaulted Passes do not expire when Season 5 ends, there is no advantage in choosing a track purely out of deadline anxiety.

If you are choosing between several old seasons, start with the pass where your carried progress and wanted cosmetics line up best. That keeps Overwatch Unvaulted Passes focused on rewards you will actually use while the current Battle Pass continues advancing beside it.
