The Overwatch Excavation Initiative is back from November 3 to December 7, 2026, giving players another way to earn Loot Boxes without buying them. Blizzard says you can complete three digs each week to earn a Loot Box, with further rewards that include ordinary, Epic and Legendary Loot Boxes.
It sounds simple, but there is an important difference between what the event actually promises and some of the numbers circulating online. Blizzard hasn’t published a full weekly challenge table or a guaranteed maximum number of boxes in its midcycle announcement. Here’s how the event is described, where to check progress and how it differs from Junkrat’s separate Loot Hunt.
How does the Overwatch Excavation Initiative work?

Blizzard’s November 3 patch notes describe logging in and winning a game as the route into the Excavation challenges. The midcycle announcement says to complete three digs each week for a Loot Box. The event also offers more Loot Boxes through continued participation, including Epic and Legendary versions.
The Overwatch Excavation Initiative is a weekly reward programme rather than a single one-off login gift. Open the live event page after logging in to see which dig you are on, what counts as completion and which reward is next. This is also where any time remaining before a weekly change should be visible.
When does Excavation Initiative start and end?
It runs from Tuesday, November 3 through Monday, December 7, 2026. That is the window confirmed by Blizzard for this Season 5 version. The event overlaps Taking Reign, the EVE Protocol crossover and, later in the month, Junkrat’s Loot Hunt, but they are separate activities with different rewards.
If you want to make the most of the Overwatch Excavation Initiative, don’t treat December 7 as permission to leave every weekly dig until the final day. Weekly objectives are designed around repeat participation, so check the reset countdown in the game instead of assuming you can complete every missed week at the end.
How many free Loot Boxes can you get?
Blizzard confirms a Loot Box after three digs in a week and further rewards across the event, with Epic and Legendary Loot Boxes included. It does not state a complete universal maximum in the two primary articles cited here. That means claims such as three Legendary boxes every week should not be treated as established.
The Overwatch Excavation Initiative also shouldn’t be confused with Junkrat’s Loot Hunt, which has a separately stated maximum of nine Loot Boxes from nine challenges. Those nine belong to Junkrat’s event. They are not an official total for Excavation Initiative.
What counts as a dig in Excavation Initiative?
The November 3 patch notes connect the event to logging in and winning a game, while Blizzard’s broader announcement uses the term digs. The precise set of conditions for each dig should be read from the current in-game event challenges, especially if you have already completed one and want to know what to do next.
For example, do not assume that three ordinary matches automatically mean three digs, or that every queue counts equally. Check whether the relevant challenge has turned complete after a match before repeating the same thing. This avoids wasting playtime on an activity that the current objective does not accept.
Are the Epic and Legendary Loot Boxes free?
They are listed as rewards within Blizzard’s Overwatch Excavation Initiative description, alongside standard Loot Boxes. The announcement does not say you must purchase a separate premium Excavation pass to reach them. What you still need to check is their position on the event track and the objectives required to unlock them.
Epic and Legendary describe the Loot Box reward types, not a guarantee that an individual box contains a particular cosmetic you want. Open your Loot Boxes through the normal game interface, and judge the event by the boxes you can earn rather than an assumed specific skin drop.

Excavation Initiative not progressing?
Start by opening the Excavation Initiative menu and checking your current dig, rather than the general Battle Pass or Taking Reign screen. Confirm you are within the November 3 to December 7 dates and look at the objective you have been given for this week.
If progress isn’t registering, check that you completed the win or login requirement the challenge actually describes. A loss may not meet a win condition, and finishing a match isn’t necessarily enough. The Overwatch Excavation Initiative screen should be your first reference for current eligibility and reward claims.
Excavation Initiative versus Junkrat’s Loot Hunt
Excavation runs across several weeks and revolves around weekly digs. Junkrat’s Loot Hunt is a short November event with nine five-game challenges, up to nine Loot Boxes and double XP. It does not use a daily reset. That difference matters if you’re trying to plan how long to play or which event has a fixed published box total.
You can work on Season 5 rewards without merging those two programmes into one. For the Overwatch Excavation Initiative, the weekly dig count is the confirmed starting point. For Junkrat, the separate nine-challenge format is the thing to watch later in November.
