Once Human Bay Crocodile is a new animal you can capture, raise, breed and ride in the Isles of Abyss scenario. Unlike a standard land mount, it can be released on the surface of the water. Riding it provides damage reduction, and its mount skill gives both you and the crocodile a damage-backlash effect.
The capture tool is the Tranquilizer Throwing Needle. Once the animal is captured, you can bring it back to your territory for care and breeding. The crocodile can move on the water surface but cannot jump, so plan your route around obstacles.
How to capture the Once Human Bay Crocodile
Find a Bay Crocodile in Isles of Abyss and prepare the Tranquilizer Throwing Needle, the tool specified by the developers for capturing one. Use the game’s capture interaction with the needle, then bring the animal to your territory. The animal’s spawn is not fixed to a single officially identified coordinate. Search the coastal areas of Isles of Abyss, and use the Tranquilizer Throwing Needle when you find one instead of relying on an invented exact location.

You need suitable territory facilities for raising and breeding the captured animal. The broader Beast Riding guide explains how animal mounts fit into Once Human, but the crocodile’s water-riding effect is specific to Isles of Abyss. Check the animal management interface for the live requirements after capture.
Bay Crocodile riding and combat effects
| Ability or limit | Confirmed effect |
|---|---|
| Mounting | Can be summoned and ridden on the water surface |
| Jumping | Cannot jump |
| Damage reduction while mounted | 10% to rider and crocodile |
| Damage reduction in water | Crocodile’s own reduction increases substantially |
| Mount skill | Applies a damage-backlash effect to rider and crocodile |
The headline bonus for Once Human Bay Crocodile is the 10% damage reduction for both mount and rider while mounted. The developer also says the crocodile’s own damage reduction increases significantly in water. That underwater improvement isn’t given as a precise percentage in the patch notes, so don’t substitute a guessed value.
The mount skill creates a damage-backlash effect on both you and the animal. The official wording does not publish every duration, cooldown or damage coefficient, so look at the live ability description before assuming it can be maintained indefinitely.
How to ride the Once Human Bay Crocodile on water
Once the animal is raised and ready to ride, release it on the water’s surface and mount it. That allows you to move with the crocodile across suitable ocean water. Since it cannot jump, plan shore entries and obstacles differently from a land mount.
Once Human Bay Crocodile riding provides damage reduction to the rider and mount, making it a useful option when travelling through dangerous water. However, that does not make it a substitute for a built ship, diving equipment or a combat loadout when attacking major ocean objectives.

Breeding and raising a captured crocodile
Once Human Bay Crocodile breeding happens in your territory, using its animal management facilities. After capture, use your animal management facilities and check the live feeding, breeding and capacity requirements. These depend on the animal systems available to your character and are not broken down into a new crocodile-specific recipe in the patch note.
If your priority is breeding rather than riding, keep the animals safe at the territory and examine their current traits before making pairing decisions. The Beastmaster Rework guide covers broader animal management systems; this article focuses on the sea mount added with the ocean scenario.
What if Once Human Bay Crocodile cannot jump or reach the shore?
The inability to jump is an intended restriction. Look for an unobstructed route in and out of the water rather than forcing the animal over ledges or rocks. Don’t plan the same route that you’d take on a more agile mount. If a path becomes awkward, reposition on accessible ground or use your ship for that segment.
The crocodile’s defensive bonuses also should not be confused with protection against every Haywire Zone hazard. The Haywire Zones guide describes specialised equipment for mist, dangerous rain and contamination; riding a crocodile isn’t listed as a universal counter to those environmental effects.
Is a Once Human Bay Crocodile better than a ship?
They serve different roles. A ship supports construction, supplies, cannons, sailing and offshore encounters. The Bay Crocodile is an animal mount with riding and defensive effects. If you’re taking on Voyager Ships or Calamity Towers, naval combat remains important.
For the quickest start, follow the Isles of Abyss joining guide, unlock the required animal-related equipment and prepare a Tranquilizer Throwing Needle before searching for a crocodile. Once Human Bay Crocodile is worth exploring as a specialist water mount, especially if you already enjoy raising animals in Once Human.
