Modern Warfare 4 Prestige offers two paths when you reach Multiplayer Level 55: Classic Prestige resets your level unlocks and Create-a-Class progression in exchange for additional benefits, while Regular Prestige restarts your rank at Level 1 without taking away those unlocks. Both paths offer rewards, but the choice changes how you rebuild your Loadouts.
The October 25 Modern Warfare 4 Prestige patch corrected a reset bug so Loadouts are now properly cleared when you Prestige. Before selecting either option, check which path you want and whether you’re ready to rebuild your classes. This guide explains the differences, the 20% XP boost, Permanent Unlock Tokens, the menu path and what happens to your weapons.
How to unlock Modern Warfare 4 Prestige
- Play Multiplayer and complete matches, objectives and challenges until you reach Level 55.
- Open Career > Progression > Prestige to see the available Prestige choice.
- Compare the Classic and Regular tracks before confirming. They do not preserve the same unlocks.
- Choose the path you want for the next Prestige level. Your rank restarts at Level 1, and the selected path determines which level unlocks must be earned again.
- Check the new progression track and rewards. You can make a fresh Classic-versus-Regular decision each time you enter another Prestige level.
The Modern Warfare 4 Prestige selection is not the same as Weapon Prestige. Weapon Prestige occurs inside an individual weapon’s Gunsmith Progression screen and resets that gun’s attachment track. The Weapon Prestige guide explains that separate system.

Classic Prestige versus Regular Prestige
Classic Prestige is the traditional restart. It relocks level-based gear and Create-a-Class progression but gives you a 20% XP boost, one Permanent Unlock Token and bonus cosmetic rewards. It’s suited to players happy to work through their unlocks again in exchange for those extras.
Regular Prestige also sends you back to Level 1, but retains the weapons, equipment and Create-a-Class unlocks you’ve already earned. You continue gaining Prestige rewards and milestones without the Classic reset and its additional bonuses. If you want to keep using your current classes immediately, Regular has the smaller disruption.
| What changes | Classic Prestige | Regular Prestige |
|---|---|---|
| Return to Level 1 | Yes | Yes |
| Level and class unlocks | Relocked | Retained |
| 20% XP boost | Yes | No Classic bonus |
| Permanent Unlock Token | One per Classic selection | No Classic token |
| Prestige rewards | Shared rewards plus Classic bonuses | Shared and Regular-track rewards |
What happens to Loadouts after the October 25 patch?
Infinity Ward’s October 25 notes say it updated the Prestige reset process to ensure Loadouts are properly cleared when Prestiging. Previously, that clearing behaviour was inconsistent. The correction applies to the reset process and shouldn’t be confused with removing the distinct Regular path that is supposed to retain Create-a-Class unlocks.
If you select Classic Modern Warfare 4 Prestige, expect to reconstruct your preferred classes as the equipment and perks become available again. With Regular, your level-based access is preserved, although the patch notes don’t promise that every saved arrangement will appear exactly as it did before the reset. Check your equipped classes after choosing a path.
How Permanent Unlock Tokens work
Selecting Classic Modern Warfare 4 Prestige gives you one Permanent Unlock Token that lets you keep one eligible level-unlock item permanently available. For example, rather than waiting to regain a late-level Tactical or Perk, use the token on that item. Its unlock will then persist even if you choose Classic again at a later Prestige.
You don’t have to spend the token immediately on the first weapon you recognise. In Modern Warfare 4 Prestige, high-level Perks, Equipment, Field Upgrades and Killstreaks are often valuable choices because acquiring a weapon Blueprint can also permanently unlock its base weapon. Check what you already own before using a limited token.

How many Prestige levels and rewards are there?
Activision confirms 10 Prestige levels, followed by Prestige Master up to Level 1,000 and Prestige Legend. The regular Prestige tracks reward progress through each cycle, and the majority of the core rewards are shared between the paths. Classic has extra variations or rewards on top of these.
Prestige 1’s instant reward is the Sandstorm Operator Skin. Its progression also includes a Call of Duty (2003) Loading Screen at Level 10, an Emblem at 20, an Engage! Weapon Charm at 30, a Men of Service Large Decal at 40 and a Mosin-Nagant Blueprint at 50: The Vet for Regular, The Vet Prime for Classic.
Can you switch from Regular to Classic Prestige later?
Yes. Activision says the Modern Warfare 4 Prestige choice is offered again each time you finish a Prestige level and prepare to enter the next. Choosing Regular once doesn’t permanently shut you out of Classic, and selecting Classic once doesn’t mean you must keep resetting unlocks at every future Prestige.
The next choice doesn’t undo what happened in your previous cycle. If you’ve just selected Classic and relocked level equipment, you’ll need to earn it again or use available permanent unlocks during that cycle. Check the benefits for the new track before confirming rather than assuming the same reset rules always apply.
Player Prestige versus Weapon Prestige
Modern Warfare 4 Prestige affects your Multiplayer Player Level and your selected class-unlock progression. Weapon Prestige is an optional reset for a fully levelled individual gun, and it relocks standard attachments on that weapon while preserving Apex and Blueprint attachments. Shared attachments remain unlocked on other non-prestiged weapons.
If an attachment disappears immediately after resetting a weapon, inspect that gun’s own progression instead of blaming your Player Prestige selection. The weapon progression guide breaks down shared attachments and re-unlocks.
Which Prestige path should you choose?
Choose Regular Modern Warfare 4 Prestige if you want to keep your current class unlocks and spend your time playing with familiar setups. Choose Classic if the 20% XP boost, Permanent Unlock Token and exclusive cosmetics are worth rebuilding the classes. Neither is a secret requirement to unlock Weapon Prestige or ordinary multiplayer playlists.
Before confirming, open your Create-a-Class screen and check the equipment you rely on. The patch now correctly clears Loadouts during the reset, so knowing which unlocks your preferred class needs will save you time afterward.
