Modern Warfare 4 weapon progression combines individual weapon levels, shared attachment unlocks and optional Weapon Prestige. Launch includes 33 weapons, and an attachment unlocked on one gun normally becomes available across other compatible guns. Prestiging changes that rule for the selected weapon: its ordinary attachments lock again, although Apex and Weapon Blueprint Attachments remain.
You can start levelling guns through Multiplayer or DMZ. When one reaches its maximum level, you can leave it fully equipped or reset it for the Pyroclast Weapon Prestige journey. Here’s how the shared unlock system works and how to avoid mistaking a Prestige reset for a missing-attachment bug.

Modern Warfare 4 weapon progression: Weapon levels are not identical
Each weapon has its own level track. Signal .50 reaches 73 beta levels, while Combat Knife stops at 30. M4 and Han 86 both reach 68, and X-58 Nyx has a shorter 47 level path. That means maxing one weapon can take a very different amount of progression from another.
Standard attachments are designed to cut repetition
Infinity Ward says the new progression system reduces redundant attachment unlocks. Unlocking an attachment once helps build out the wider arsenal instead of forcing the exact same part to be earned repeatedly on every compatible gun. That should make experimenting with a newly unlocked weapon less punishing.
Modern Warfare 4 weapon progression: Apex Attachments are the final reward
Most supported weapons unlock an Apex Attachment when fully levelled. These are not ordinary stat parts. M4 Hurricane changes the M4 to a 5.7x28mm high capacity conversion, X-58 Void pushes the Nyx further into stealth, and Type 73 Assault adds explosive rounds through a top mounted magazine conversion.
Modern Warfare 4 weapon progression: Apex Attachments have their own slot
Apex Attachments equip separately and do not consume one of the normal Gunsmith attachment slots. That is important because a fully levelled weapon does not need to give up an ordinary optic, magazine or handling part just to use its Apex effect.
Modern Warfare 4 weapon progression: Where Gunny fits into progression
Gunny uses attachments you have already unlocked to generate short range, balanced and long range builds. The recommendations evolve as more parts become available. It is optional, so you can use the suggested setup as a starting point and then edit every part manually.
Which weapons should you progress first?
Start with weapons you can equip early and actually enjoy using. Han 86, ISO Nightshade, Rezi 12, FiNN LMG, MAR-9 and KG-7 Vulcan all provide immediate primary weapon projects in the beta. Type 73 follows at Rank 5 and M4 at Rank 9, giving you two strong early additions before the later specialist guns open.
Modern Warfare 4 weapon progression: Create a Class is the hub for weapon progression
Create a Class brings weapons, equipment, Perks, Killstreaks and the chosen Operator into one loadout. The beta supports up to 12 custom classes, so you do not need to rebuild the same weapon every time the map changes. Keep different versions or different weapon roles ready and switch when the match asks for something else.
The Firing Range should be part of progression
Every new attachment is easier to judge in the Firing Range than in a chaotic first match. Fire the weapon before the change, add one part and check recoil, handling and sight picture again. That is especially useful with long progression tracks because it prevents a weapon from becoming heavier and less comfortable simply because more slots are available.
Modern Warfare 4 weapon progression: Not every weapon uses the normal Apex route
PILA and Combat Knife do not have normal Gunsmith or Apex support in the beta. Axion and Sang 9mm are default loadout only, and WZ.55 Striga is tied to a Campaign mission. Those exceptions matter because a single progression rule should not be forced onto weapons that the beta explicitly treats differently.
Modern Warfare 4 weapon progression: Why the system rewards specialising without locking you in
The separate weapon tracks encourage you to finish guns you enjoy, while shared attachment logic reduces the punishment for trying something new later. You can therefore specialise enough to reach an Apex without making the rest of the arsenal feel untouched. The 12 custom loadouts also mean a finished weapon can keep several jobs ready at once, such as a faster objective build and a steadier long range version.

Weapon Prestige locks regular attachments again
Once you max out a gun, Modern Warfare 4 weapon progression lets you choose Weapon Prestige. It resets that gun to Level 1 and relocks standard attachments, including shared ones. Other non-prestiged weapons still have access to those shared attachments. The exceptions on the prestiged gun are Apex Attachments and Weapon Blueprint Attachments.
| Part of progression | After Weapon Prestige |
|---|---|
| Selected weapon level | Back to Level 1 |
| Standard attachments | Relocked on that gun |
| Shared attachments | Relocked on that gun only |
| Apex and Weapon Blueprint Attachments | Stay available |
| Camos, reticles and weapon cosmetics | Stay unlocked |
| Other non-prestiged weapons | Shared unlocks remain |
When your gun reaches max level again during Prestige 1, it enters Weapon Prestige Master automatically without another reset. The rewards are the Pyroclast camo variants at Prestige 1 Level 1, Prestige 1 Max Level, Master Level 150 and Master Level 250. Activision confirms these unlocks in its official progression guide.

What should you level first?
If you’re still working through the launch arsenal, the fastest Modern Warfare 4 weapon progression comes from taking advantage of shared attachments rather than repeatedly earning the same accessory on different weapons. Look at each gun’s Progression tab to find an attachment that several favourites can use, then level the gun that grants it.
Use our best weapons to level first guide for the early choices and the Gunsmith walkthrough for equipping attachments. The Firing Range helps compare recoil and ADS before saving a loadout.
