The Minecraft Switch 2 physical upgrade gives owners of an original Nintendo Switch cartridge a discount on digital Ultimate Collection, not a free Standard Edition download. Launch the old Minecraft game on Switch 2 during the promotion to claim the offer.
Minecraft launched natively on Switch 2 on October 27, 2026. The cartridge offer runs until January 31, 2027 at 9 AM Pacific. Your original game card still works through backwards compatibility, but it doesn’t turn the older software into the enhanced Switch 2 edition.
Minecraft Switch 2 physical upgrade: which offer do you get?
The Minecraft Switch 2 physical upgrade is for people who own the original Minecraft for Nintendo Switch cartridge. Digital owners receive a different deal: a free download of the native Standard Edition in the UK and most other territories.
The new physical Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 Standard Edition is a separate product. If you’re buying that boxed copy, it already contains the native game. The discount covered here is for owners moving from the original Switch version.
How to redeem the cartridge-owner Ultimate discount
To claim the Minecraft Switch 2 physical upgrade, start inside the old Minecraft game. Mojang says an in-game message takes you to the discounted digital Ultimate Collection in Nintendo eShop.
- Insert your original Minecraft Switch cartridge into Switch 2.
- Launch the old Switch game, not the native Switch 2 edition.
- Open the in-game discounted Ultimate Collection invitation.
- Follow its link to Nintendo eShop.
- Check the price, then buy Ultimate Collection if you want it.
The invitation is available between October 27, 2026 at 9 AM Pacific and January 31, 2027 at 9 AM Pacific. Follow its link to see the price offered to your Nintendo Account and region.
Can a cartridge owner claim free Standard Edition?
No, not with the cartridge alone. The free digital Standard entitlement is for owners of the old digital Switch version. It is free in the UK and most regions; Japan, Taiwan and Thailand charge small specified local fees.
If you also bought the original Minecraft digitally on your Nintendo Account, that separate purchase qualifies for the free Standard Edition offer. The cartridge-based promotion remains a discount on Ultimate Collection. Our free-upgrade guide explains the digital route.
What does Ultimate Collection include?
Ultimate includes the native Minecraft for Switch 2, Vibrant Visuals and the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack. It also contains Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs, Plenty O’Blocks, Decocraft and Weapons + Tools add-ons, five Character Creator items and a total of 1,000 Minecoins.
Standard already includes the complete native game, Mario Mash-Up and graphical enhancements. The higher price is for additional cosmetic and Marketplace items. Those extras are not necessary to transfer old worlds.
Physical upgrade offer not showing: what to check
For a missing Minecraft Switch 2 physical upgrade invitation, check that you’re actually running the old cartridge game on Switch 2. Starting the native Switch 2 application is not the instruction in Mojang’s announcement. Connect the console to the internet and update the old game.
If the Minecraft Switch 2 physical upgrade message isn’t appearing, check which game you’ve opened. Insert the original cartridge and launch Minecraft for Nintendo Switch on Switch 2. The invitation appears inside the older game, not the native Switch 2 application.
Can you move Minecraft worlds without upgrading to Ultimate?
Update the original game and connect Switch 2 to the internet. Open Minecraft during the promotional window and follow its invitation into eShop. The standard Ultimate Collection listing can show a different price if you haven’t followed the offer link.
Our Minecraft Switch 2 world transfer guide explains first-launch conversion and Settings > Storage > Sync Old Worlds. Be careful with save transfers because Nintendo warns they may delete the source copy or overwrite a destination save.
Minecraft Switch 2 physical upgrade deadline and Minecoins
The Minecraft Switch 2 physical upgrade discount ends at 9 AM Pacific on January 31, 2027. If you want Ultimate Collection at the cartridge-owner rate, open the original game on Switch 2 and follow its invitation before the deadline.
The included Minecoins must be spent within Nintendo’s ecosystem. Our Minecraft Minecoins cross-platform guide explains the newer Nintendo Wallet and the older transferable Legacy Wallet.
