Minecraft Straw Bed is a new Wilderness Bound item designed for players who want to sleep during long journeys without accidentally replacing their home spawn point. It is cheap to craft, deliberately disposable and works very differently from the normal bed that most survival players carry.
The Minecraft Straw Bed recipe uses three hay bales and produces four Straw Beds. Sleeping in one skips the night without setting a new spawn point, but the bed is destroyed after that single use.
How to craft a Minecraft Straw Bed

Official source: Minecraft / Mojang
To craft a Minecraft Straw Bed, place three Hay Bales in the crafting grid. The recipe produces four Straw Beds, so one small stack of wheat can cover several nights of an expedition.
| Recipe | Result |
|---|---|
| 3 Hay Bales | 4 Straw Beds |
Hay Bales are crafted from nine Wheat each, meaning the full Straw Bed recipe represents 27 Wheat if you are starting from the raw crop.
Because the output is four beds rather than one, the effective material cost per night is much lower than the recipe first appears.
How does the Minecraft Straw Bed work?
The Minecraft Straw Bed lets you sleep through the night without updating your respawn location. That is the entire reason the item exists.
With a normal bed, sleeping far from home can overwrite the spawn point you deliberately set at your base. If you then die during the trip, you may return to the temporary bed instead of your main home.
A Straw Bed avoids that problem. You sleep, morning arrives, and your existing spawn point remains untouched.
The trade-off is durability: there is none. A Minecraft Straw Bed disappears after one successful use.
Is the Straw Bed reusable?
No. Every Minecraft Straw Bed is a one-use item. Once a player sleeps in it, the bed is destroyed.
That makes it a travel supply rather than permanent furniture. If you want a bed in a base or village, a normal bed is still the better choice.
The four-bed crafting output is Mojang’s way of making the disposable design practical. Carry several on a long trip and use them only when you need to remove the night without changing your spawn.
Can you use a Straw Bed in the Nether or End?
The Minecraft Straw Bed cannot be used normally in the Nether or The End. Mojang’s testing notes state that trying to sleep in one in either dimension destroys the Straw Bed.
That behaviour is worth remembering because normal beds have their own dangerous dimension behaviour. The important Wilderness Bound rule is simply not to waste your Straw Beds outside the Overworld.
Where can you find Straw Beds?
Minecraft Straw Bed items can also appear as part of Abandoned Camps. Mojang added Straw Beds to those structures during the Wilderness Bound testing cycle.
Abandoned Camps generate in many Overworld biomes and contain chests and barrels with loot, so exploring them may give you additional camping supplies without crafting everything yourself.
The update’s marketing also shows Straw Beds used inside improvised shelters and elevated camps, which is exactly the kind of temporary setup the item is built for.
Straw Bed vs normal bed
The biggest difference is the spawn mechanic. A normal bed is reusable and sets your spawn point when you sleep. The Minecraft Straw Bed is disposable and deliberately does not set your spawn.
| Feature | Straw Bed | Normal Bed |
|---|---|---|
| Skips night | Yes | Yes |
| Sets spawn point | No | Yes |
| Reusable | No | Yes |
| Best use | Travelling | Permanent base |
For a settled base, the normal bed wins easily. For a long trip where you absolutely do not want to change spawn, the Straw Bed solves a very specific old annoyance.
Why carry Straw Beds while exploring?
The Minecraft Straw Bed becomes especially useful when searching for the new Dappled Forest and Abandoned Camps. Both encourage travelling into unfamiliar terrain, and older survival worlds may require a long trip into unexplored chunks before the new generation appears.
Carrying Straw Beds means you can keep the journey in daylight without repeatedly moving your spawn point farther and farther away from home.
They also reduce the temptation to leave ordinary beds scattered everywhere, which can become confusing if you later forget which one contains your active spawn.
When does the Straw Bed release?
The Minecraft Straw Bed releases with Wilderness Bound on September 15, 2026. It has already appeared in Java snapshots and Bedrock previews ahead of the full game drop.
Once the update is installed, three Hay Bales are all you need to begin crafting them. For anyone who regularly disappears thousands of blocks from home looking for structures, the Minecraft Straw Bed may quietly become one of Wilderness Bound’s most useful additions.
