Minecraft Dappled Forest is the new autumn-style biome arriving with Wilderness Bound, filled with red, orange and yellow poplar trees, shelf mushrooms and occasional Abandoned Camps. Mojang says the biome generates near cold biomes, which gives players a useful clue when trying to find one naturally.
The Minecraft Dappled Forest is difficult to mistake for an ordinary forest once it comes into view. Tall poplars create a strong red-and-gold canopy, fallen poplar trees can appear on the ground, and Red Shrubs add even more colour underneath.
Where to find the Minecraft Dappled Forest

Official source: Minecraft / Mojang
The official generation rule says the Minecraft Dappled Forest can be found near cold biomes. Mojang has not described it as being exclusive to one particular neighbouring biome, so the best survival strategy is to explore the edges of colder regions rather than endlessly searching ordinary plains.
Snowy and colder-looking terrain therefore makes a better starting point than a hot desert or jungle. Keep moving along biome borders and look for the very obvious change to colourful poplar foliage.
In an existing world, travel into chunks you have never previously explored. Minecraft cannot simply replace terrain you have already generated with the new biome, so spending an hour circling your established base may get you nowhere.
How to recognise a Dappled Forest
The easiest sign of a Minecraft Dappled Forest is the poplar canopy. Poplar trees come with red, orange or yellow leaves, and the corresponding leaf blocks produce matching falling-leaf particles.
You can also find fallen Poplar trees, Shelf Mushrooms attached to trunks and fallen logs, Red Shrubs growing in patches and ordinary Leaf Litter around the trees.
| Dappled Forest feature | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Trees | Tall Poplar trees and fallen Poplar trees |
| Leaves | Red, orange and yellow variants |
| Plants | Red Shrubs and Leaf Litter |
| Mushrooms | Small and large Shelf Mushrooms |
| Structure | Dappled Forest Abandoned Camp variant |
Those features make the Minecraft Dappled Forest one of the most visually distinctive normal Overworld biomes in the update.
What spawns in the Dappled Forest?
The Minecraft Dappled Forest supports familiar passive and neutral mobs rather than introducing a biome-exclusive animal. Sheep, chickens, cows, pigs, rabbits and foxes can spawn there.
Where Minecraft has cold variants for those mobs, Mojang says the Dappled Forest uses them. That detail helps sell the strange combination of autumn colours and colder surrounding climate.
There are no special hostile mobs announced specifically for the biome. Standard hostile spawning rules still apply when lighting and difficulty allow it.
What are Poplar trees for?
Poplar trees provide Poplar Logs, which can be crafted into the full new Poplar wood set. Their leaves drop Poplar Saplings, and a sapling can randomly grow into any of the red, orange or yellow leaf variants.
That means you do not need to painstakingly collect three different sapling types to reproduce the full colour range back at your base.
Wandering Traders can also offer Poplar Saplings, but finding the Minecraft Dappled Forest itself gives you access to the complete environment and the other biome-specific materials at the same time.
Shelf Mushrooms and Red Shrubs
Shelf Mushrooms generate on both standing and fallen Poplar trees. Small Shelf Mushrooms can be grown into large ones with bone meal, while a large Shelf Mushroom drops two mushroom items when broken.
They can be used in stew recipes and have a slight bouncy effect when something lands on them. They are not trampolines, but the movement is noticeable and gives the forest a little more character.
Red Shrubs are decorative plants found in small patches. They can be composted, and bone meal can spread additional shrubs into suitable adjacent spaces.
Can Abandoned Camps appear here?
Yes. A specific Dappled Forest version of the Abandoned Camp can generate inside the Minecraft Dappled Forest. That makes the biome particularly worth exploring because the camp can contain chests, barrels and other Wilderness Bound items.
Abandoned Camps later gained Explorer Maps that can lead toward other camps or structures, so finding one can naturally send you off on another journey.
Best way to find the biome quickly
For normal survival play, head into fresh unexplored terrain near cold biomes and travel with a high vantage point whenever possible. The strong red, orange and yellow canopy is much easier to spot from a hill, mountain or other open view than from underneath neighbouring trees.
The Minecraft Dappled Forest launches as part of Wilderness Bound on September 15, 2026. Once your world is updated, unexplored terrain is the key: find colder areas, follow their edges, and watch for the unmistakable poplar colours.
