This Kowakujō Directed Mode guide explains how the new guided Zombies mode works, what changes from the standard map and which rewards players can unlock for completing the Main Quest.

Kowakujō Directed Mode arrived with Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Season 5 on July 23, 2026. It provides additional on-screen guidance for the Kowakujō Main Quest and limits progression to a maximum of Round 15, giving players more time to follow the objectives without the difficulty continuing to increase indefinitely.

Completing the mode rewards players with the Yōjinbō Operator Skin for Carver, a Kowakujō Directed Mode Completion Calling Card and 5,000 XP.

What Is Kowakujō Directed Mode?

Kowakujō Directed Mode is a guided version of the Zombies map’s Main Quest.

The original Kowakujō map launched during Black Ops 7 Season 4 Reloaded on June 25, 2026. Its standard version requires players to uncover and complete the Main Quest steps without the additional guidance provided by Directed Mode.

Season 5 added Directed Mode to make that story easier to follow. Players receive on-screen quest objectives and are directed towards the areas connected to their current task.

The mode still takes place across the complete Kowakujō map and includes the same core setting, enemies and story. Players explore a volcanic region surrounding a crumbling Japanese castle while fighting Oni, Scorched Zombies, Hellhounds and other undead enemies.

How Does the Round 15 Cap Work?

Kowakujō Directed Mode has a maximum round cap of 15.

Rounds continue increasing as players complete the required objectives, but they cannot progress beyond Round 15. This prevents the match from continually becoming harder while players are still trying to understand or complete the later Main Quest stages.

ModeRound progression
Standard KowakujōRounds continue increasing
Kowakujō Directed ModeRounds are capped at 15

The cap does not mean the entire quest must be completed before Round 15. Instead, the match remains at the capped difficulty while players continue working through the guided objectives.

Round cap box: Reaching Round 15 does not end the match. It stops further round difficulty increases while the Main Quest remains active.

How to Start Kowakujō Directed Mode

Players can start the mode from the Black Ops 7 Zombies menu.

Select Kowakujō and choose the Directed Mode option rather than the standard Round-Based version.

Kowakujō Directed Mode should not be confused with the separate Kowakujō Starting Room mode also added during Season 5.

Directed ModeStarting Room
Uses the full Kowakujō mapConfines players to the Outer Ward
Guides the Main QuestFocuses on round survival
Maximum round of 15Includes milestone survival rewards
Unlocks the Yōjinbō SkinUnlocks separate Round 10, 25 and 50 rewards

Starting Room places players within the Outer Ward and restricts them to the weapons and equipment available in that area. Directed Mode instead provides access to the full map and the guided Main Quest.

Does Directed Mode Show Every Quest Step?

Directed Mode provides additional guidance and displays the current Main Quest objective on screen.

Players are directed towards the area where the next objective must be completed, reducing the need to discover the overall quest order independently.

However, Directed Mode does not remove every piece of gameplay from the quest. Players still need to interact with objects, fight enemies, use the Nekomancer Wonder Weapon and complete objectives around Kowakujō.

The official Season 5 information confirms the guided objectives and Round 15 cap, but it does not publish a complete written list of every Directed Mode prompt or interaction.

That means players should follow the current on-screen objective rather than relying on an unverified fixed list of prompts from the standard Easter egg.

Important box: Directed Mode follows the Kowakujō Main Quest, but the exact wording and timing of the prompts may differ from older standard-mode walkthroughs.

What Is the Kowakujō Main Quest About?

Kowakujō takes place within a feudal Japanese castle located near active volcanoes.

The Zombies crew must fight through the castle and surrounding volcanic landscape while dealing with supernatural forces connected to the World Seed. The map includes Oni enemies, Scorched Zombies, Hellhounds and the Nekomancer Wonder Weapon.

Directed Mode guides players through this existing storyline rather than introducing a new Season 5 quest.

The full quest includes a mixture of:

  • Opening routes through the castle
  • Unlocking important map facilities
  • Using the Nekomancer Wonder Weapon
  • Completing story objectives
  • Fighting special enemies
  • Reaching the final encounter

The exact order is presented through the Directed Mode prompts during the match.

Does Kowakujō Directed Mode Include Pack-a-Punch?

Pack-a-Punch remains part of the Kowakujō map and is available during Directed Mode.

Players must progress through the guided opening objectives to access the relevant parts of the castle and continue upgrading their weapons.

The official Season 5 notes do not provide a separate Directed Mode Pack-a-Punch route, which suggests players should follow the objective markers shown within the match.

A full Pack-a-Punch guide would be better treated as a separate article after the exact Directed Mode route, door costs and prompts have been checked directly in-game.

Is the Nekomancer Available in Directed Mode?

The Nekomancer Wonder Weapon remains part of Kowakujō and its Main Quest.

The weapon was introduced with the original map and is connected to the supernatural cat imagery and story objectives found throughout the castle.

Directed Mode should guide players through the objectives required to obtain and use the Nekomancer rather than requiring them to discover the entire process independently.

Activision’s Season 5 material does not provide a complete written Nekomancer walkthrough, so players should follow the highlighted objectives and locations shown during the mode.

Kowakujō Directed Mode Rewards

There are three confirmed rewards for completing the Kowakujō Main Quest through Directed Mode.

RequirementReward
Complete Kowakujō Directed ModeYōjinbō Operator Skin for Carver
Complete Kowakujō Directed ModeKowakujō Directed Mode Completion Calling Card
Complete Kowakujō Directed Mode5,000 XP

These rewards were confirmed in the official Black Ops 7 Season 5 patch notes.

The Yōjinbō Skin is a cosmetic appearance for Carver and is the main exclusive reward associated with the mode.

Reward box: Completing the standard Kowakujō Main Quest does not automatically replace the Directed Mode completion requirement. The Yōjinbō Skin is specifically listed as a reward for completing Directed Mode.

Can You Complete Kowakujō Directed Mode Solo?

Directed Modes in Black Ops 7 are designed to offer additional support for players who want to experience the Zombies Main Quest without solving every step independently.

The on-screen guidance and Round 15 cap should make Kowakujō more approachable for solo players, although Activision does not describe the mode as solo-only or guarantee that it will be easy.

Players must still survive combat encounters and complete the guided objectives.

A squad may make some battles easier, but the most important difference is the added quest guidance rather than a separate reduction in enemy difficulty.

Is Kowakujō Directed Mode Easier Than Standard Mode?

Kowakujō Directed Mode is easier to follow than the standard version.

There are two main reasons:

  • Current quest objectives are displayed on screen.
  • Round progression is capped at Round 15.

Standard mode does not provide the same level of guidance and allows rounds to keep increasing in difficulty.

Directed Mode does not remove the map’s enemies, Wonder Weapon objectives or final story encounter, so players must still prepare their weapons, armour and perks before progressing too far.

Is Kowakujō Directed Mode Available Now?

Kowakujō Directed Mode is available now following the launch of Black Ops 7 Season 5 on July 23, 2026.

Players can select the mode from the Kowakujō Zombies menu, follow the guided Main Quest objectives and work towards unlocking the Yōjinbō Carver Skin, completion Calling Card and 5,000 XP.

This Kowakujō Directed Mode guide will need expanding once the exact in-game objective prompts and any Directed Mode-specific changes have been fully documented. For now, the confirmed features are the on-screen quest guidance, maximum Round 15 cap and the three completion rewards.
