Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition GameShare allows two people to play co-op using one copy of Age of Calamity Definitive Edition. Nintendo confirms both local wireless sharing and online play through GameChat, in addition to split-screen on one Switch 2.

The setup depends on which consoles you own. GameShare must be hosted from Nintendo Switch 2. Another Switch 2 can join locally or online, while an original Nintendo Switch can only join a nearby local wireless session. For online sharing, both people must have Switch 2 and meet the GameChat requirements.

There are three ways to play together: on one Switch 2 in split-screen, on two nearby consoles using local GameShare, or remotely through GameChat. Every option supports a two-player session, but the console and membership requirements change depending on which one you choose.

Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition GameShare gives the guest access only while the host is sharing a session. It doesn’t give your friend a permanent download, a separate game licence or a copy they can launch later without you.

Can you play with someone on the original Switch?

Yes, an original Nintendo Switch can join a nearby local GameShare session hosted by Switch 2. Nintendo’s general GameShare rules explicitly allow this. The guest is not installing or buying the Switch 2-only Definitive Edition; they’re joining the host’s supported session.

That makes Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition GameShare useful if your household has one Switch 2 and an older Switch. However, the older console can’t host the session or join over the internet through GameChat. For remote play, both participants need Switch 2.

How do you join a local GameShare session?

On the receiving console, open GameShare from the HOME Menu. Choose Join GameShare, then A Local User. Select the nearby host and join the available session. Nintendo says both consoles need the latest system software.

The host needs to launch the game and start sharing from its supported multiplayer feature. Nintendo warns that the host’s steps vary by game. The exact Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition GameShare host menu hasn’t yet been shown in first-party instructions, so it would be misleading to invent a button sequence.

How does online co-op with GameChat work?

For online play, start or join GameChat on Switch 2. Once invited, open the GameChat menu using the C Button, select View GameShare Invitations and choose Join GameShare. Nintendo also offers a way to see GameChat sharing sessions from GameShare on the HOME Menu.

Online Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition GameShare requires internet access, Nintendo Accounts, Nintendo Switch Online membership and GameChat setup. Nintendo also requires phone-number registration, and children need parental approval via the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. None of that is needed simply to play local split-screen together on one console.

Do both players need a game cartridge?

No, not for a supported GameShare session. Nintendo’s product description says one owner can share the two-player co-op experience. That does not mean a second player receives a transferable digital copy or can start a separate independent playthrough without the host.

GameShare is also not the same as playing two characters on one Switch 2 in split-screen. The Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition GameShare option connects separate consoles when you’re using local wireless or GameChat, while split-screen needs only one console and enough controllers.

Can you GameShare before release?

The Definitive Edition launches on 25 February 2027. Nintendo has announced the sharing feature, but a final host-side walkthrough for this specific title will need the released version or additional first-party instructions. Until then, use Nintendo’s generic guest steps and check the actual game when available.

For a shared television, split-screen is the simplest choice. On two nearby consoles, local GameShare lets a Switch 2 owner host an original Switch or another Switch 2. For friends in different homes, use GameChat with two Switch 2 systems. The Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition GameShare options are confirmed, while the title-specific host menu still needs launch verification.
