Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition save transfer lets you bring existing Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity progress from Nintendo Switch into the separate Switch 2 Definitive Edition. Nintendo confirms that the original game’s save is compatible with the new edition, which launches on 25 February 2027.
The catch is that this works in only one direction. Definitive Edition saves cannot be opened in the original Switch game. It is also important not to confuse this cross-game feature with Nintendo’s general console-to-console save transfer, which can delete the source save after a successful move.
Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition save transfer: which direction works?

Nintendo specifically allows original Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity progress to be transferred into Definitive Edition. That means players who have already completed chapters, unlocked characters or spent hours developing their original save have a route into the enhanced Switch 2 version instead of necessarily beginning again.
The Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition save transfer is one-way. When you play and save in the Switch 2 Definitive Edition, those new save files cannot be loaded in the old Nintendo Switch release. If you intend to keep playing both editions, do not assume progress from one will keep appearing in the other.
| Save route | Supported? |
|---|---|
| Original Switch game to Switch 2 Definitive Edition | Yes, Nintendo confirms a transfer |
| Definitive Edition back to original Switch game | No, saves are incompatible |
| Automatic two-way syncing between the games | Not supported by Nintendo’s description |
How do you move your original data to Switch 2?
There are two separate jobs: getting the original save onto Switch 2, and importing that progress into Definitive Edition. Nintendo’s standard system-transfer tool moves compatible save files between consoles; it does not explain every step needed for this separate edition to recognise the original game’s data.
The Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition save transfer is confirmed, but its specific in-game import screen has not been demonstrated yet. Nintendo has not published the exact button sequence or what happens if a Definitive Edition save already exists. Do not overwrite anything based on instructions intended for another title.
Should you use Transfer Your Save Data?
Nintendo’s standard transfer is under System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data. Both consoles must be nearby and online, with users linked to the same Nintendo Account. Nintendo explicitly says this is a move, not a copy: the sending console’s save is deleted after a successful transfer. A paid Nintendo Switch Online membership isn’t required for this local transfer.
If you want to keep playing on the original Switch, that source-save warning matters. Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition save transfer is a different compatibility promise. Just moving the original game’s data between consoles doesn’t prove it has already been imported into Definitive Edition.
Can Nintendo Switch Online cloud saves help?
Nintendo lists Save Data Cloud support for the new edition. Nintendo Switch Online is required for cloud backups. If you have a supported original-game cloud backup, cloud features may help you manage your old save data on compatible hardware, but downloading a backup is not proof that it has been converted into the new software’s format.
The Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition save transfer is about using an existing original save in Definitive Edition; Nintendo has not specified the exact interaction between that cross-title conversion and a downloaded cloud backup. Verify the official menu before overwriting a newer local save or assuming a cloud download completes the whole job.
Will transferring erase your old save?
Nintendo’s announcement does not say that importing Age of Calamity progress into Definitive Edition automatically deletes your original progress. The separate general Transfer Your Save Data procedure can remove a save from the source console, however. That is why the two operations should not be described as interchangeable.
Before transferring, check the Nintendo Account and user profile on both consoles. The receiving system may offer to overwrite an existing save for the same software. Nintendo warns that overwritten data cannot be recovered. Check any such prompt carefully rather than deleting or replacing progress to test the new game’s import.
Can the same save be used on the original Switch again?
Only original-game save data remains compatible with the original-game software. Progress newly created by Definitive Edition cannot go back. An owner who wants to revisit the older version should understand that the games will not share a continuously updated campaign.
There is also no reason to expect your old Switch cartridge to run the new Definitive Edition. It’s separate software available for purchase, with a digital discount for eligible owners. The Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition save transfer addresses progress, not the purchase licence.
When can you finish the transfer?
Definitive Edition arrives on 25 February 2027. The Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition save transfer will let you use the original game’s progress in the new release, but Nintendo hasn’t yet shown the game-specific import buttons. The first safe walkthrough will be one grounded in the final Switch 2 software.
You can take a favourite Age of Calamity campaign forward, but progress made afterwards in Definitive Edition cannot return to the original game. That’s the Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition save transfer rule worth remembering. Our related guides cover the separate purchase, included expansion and multiplayer options.
