Splinters of Evil are the central power choice in Diablo 4 Season 15. You first earn them through the Season of Hell’s Legacy questline by defeating echoes of Diablo, Baal and Mephisto, then use the largest Waking Nightmares when you want to change which Prime Evil power and reputation track you are carrying.

Splinters of Evil explained
There are three Prime Evil Splinters: Diablo’s Splinter of Terror, Baal’s Splinter of Destruction and Mephisto’s Splinter of Hatred. You can only bear one at a time, so the system is about choosing which endgame activities and power bonuses you want to lean into rather than equipping all three together.
Get the first three through the seasonal questline
The Season 15 story sends you through recreated nightmares from Diablo’s history. Blizzard says you collect the three Splinters of Evil by defeating Diablo beneath Tristram Cathedral, Baal at Arreat Summit and Mephisto within the Durance of Hate.
How to switch Splinters of Evil
Once you have progressed far enough to replay the largest Waking Nightmares, those Capstone-style encounters become the route to changing your active Prime Evil Splinter. Blizzard says acquiring another Splinter from the largest Waking Nightmares lets you choose a different reputation track and reward path.
Diablo’s Splinter of Terror
The Diablo path modifies Helltide and Infernal Hordes, while all three paths also affect the Tree of Whispers. Its Iconic Power periodically erupts as Fire damage. Bearing Diablo’s power also makes you more vulnerable to Diablo himself.
Baal’s Splinter of Destruction
Baal’s path modifies The Undercity and Lair Bosses. The associated Iconic Power deals Cold damage when it erupts during combat. If those activities are already central to your endgame routine, Baal’s reputation track is the natural one to test first.
Mephisto’s Splinter of Hatred
Mephisto’s path modifies The Pit and Nightmare Dungeons and gives a Physical-damage Iconic Power. As with the other two, the Splinter adds a downside by increasing your vulnerability to the Prime Evil whose power you are carrying.
Each path has modifiers and upgrades
Every Prime Evil reputation track contains eight activity modifiers and six upgrades for its Iconic Power. That makes the choice more than a damage-type swap: it changes the way particular endgame activities behave as you progress the track through War Plans.
Do not confuse these with Soul Splinters
Splinters of Evil are not the same system as the equippable Soul Splinters. Soul Splinters are seasonal gems associated with demons and artifacts, come in multiple rarities and can occupy up to three Jewelry slots. The Prime Evil Splinters are the single active seasonal power and reputation choice.
Which Splinter should you choose first?
Start with the activities you actually plan to farm. Helltide and Infernal Hordes point toward Diablo, Undercity and Lair Bosses point toward Baal, while Pit and Nightmare Dungeon players will get more immediate value from Mephisto. You can change later through the largest Waking Nightmares.
Where the system starts
The system is introduced directly through the Season of Hell’s Legacy story, so you do not need to hunt an obscure open-world drop before using it. The official Blizzard overview confirms the three bosses, activities and switching method.
Splinters of Evil are earned, not random world drops
Splinters of Evil come from the seasonal Prime Evil path rather than dropping randomly from ordinary monsters. The first set is tied to the three story encounters, and later switching is tied to the largest Waking Nightmares. That makes story progress more important than farming Helltide for an item that is not actually part of its loot table.
Splinters of Evil decide which activities change
Splinters of Evil are also the switch that decides which endgame activities receive the seasonal modifiers you are progressing. Diablo points you toward Helltide and Infernal Hordes, Baal toward Undercity and Lair Bosses, and Mephisto toward The Pit and Nightmare Dungeons. The Tree of Whispers is affected by all three paths.
