Goodboy Galaxy Nintendo Switch launched on 30 October 2026, bringing Maxwell the spacefaring dog to Nintendo’s console with local couch co-op for one or two players. Nintendo also marks the original Switch game as compatible with Switch 2, rather than selling a separate native Switch 2 edition.

Along the way, Maxwell meets more than 50 characters and collects their friendship cards. Those are in-game friends, not extra player slots. Local co-op is for two people sharing a console.

Goodboy Galaxy released for Nintendo Switch on 30 October 2026. Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility notice says the original Switch software is supported and behaves consistently with its Switch version. You therefore do not need to hunt for a different Switch 2-labelled release.

Buy the original Nintendo Switch version to play it on either supported console. Nintendo hasn’t announced a separate Switch 2 enhancement package, so there’s no second edition you need to select.

How Two-Player Couch Co-op Works

The Nintendo listing says Single system (1 to 2) and calls out local couch co-op. Two people can therefore play together on the same console. The product page does not list online co-op, so don’t expect a cross-platform lobby or internet invitation option from that description.

Each player needs a compatible controller, but both play on the same system. If you’re after online co-op across different houses, this isn’t the mode described in Nintendo’s listing.

Who Is Maxwell and What Is the Story?

Maxwell is a dog whose homeworld is collapsing. He jumps to another system in a desperate search for help, but becomes stranded among unfamiliar planets and threatening forces. Getting home means exploring, finding allies and learning to use his equipment.

The adventure uses pixel-art platforming rather than a traditional role-playing party. Maxwell jumps, shoots and slices his way through hostile areas, with shrinking, warping and drilling also featured in the official game description. There is room to experiment with different routes rather than following a single corridor.

What Are the 50+ Friendship Cards For?

The game advertises more than 50 friends and collectible friendship cards. These are characters Maxwell can meet through exploring the galaxy. Finding them is part of the appeal for players who enjoy seeing what each world hides, not a multiplayer headcount.

Look beyond the obvious exit in each level. Hidden areas, alternate routes and blaster upgrades give Maxwell more to find, while friendship cards reward exploring rather than rushing through.

Goodboy Galaxy Nintendo Switch: Bosses, Blaster Upgrades and Chapter Zero

Maxwell has to deal with multiple types of bosses, while new blaster abilities help him survive hazards and hostile creatures. The official description emphasizes levels with several routes, encouraging you to revisit places rather than simply racing to the exit.

Chapter Zero is included as prequel content alongside Maxwell’s main adventure. It gives you more of the world to explore without buying a separate expansion.

Download Size, Price and Save Data

The UK Nintendo page lists a 337 MB download, while the US storefront has shown 436 MB. Check the size in your own eShop and leave some room for later updates.

Nintendo’s US page shows $34.99. UK buyers should check the local eShop rather than treating that dollar amount as a GBP price. Save Data Cloud support is listed, with the relevant Nintendo Switch Online membership required for cloud backup.

Is Goodboy Galaxy Good for Two Players?

If you want a colourful sci-fi platformer to play on one sofa, this is a straightforward local two-player option. Maxwell’s exploration and friendship cards also make sense for someone playing solo. The choice depends on whether your household wants shared-screen platforming rather than online matchmaking.

Goodboy Galaxy Nintendo Switch combines an accessible local co-op setup with plenty to find when playing solo. The secret routes and friendships give Maxwell’s adventure a reason to revisit its levels.

What to Check Before Downloading

Make sure you choose the Goodboy Galaxy Nintendo Switch listing and have enough free storage. Nintendo supports handheld, TV and tabletop play, although controllers and software behaviour can depend on your particular Switch model. The game itself isn’t a native Switch 2 upgrade.

Our Hello Kitty Party Land platform guide offers another Switch family comparison if you’re shopping for accessible local play. For Maxwell, the main questions are already answered: 30 October launch, local one-or-two-player co-op, and compatibility with Switch 2.
