Gears of War E-Day Co Op supports up to four players online through the full Campaign, while Xbox Series X and S also support two-player local split screen. To play online, open Campaign, create or load the host save, build the party from the Campaign lobby and invite friends before starting the chapter or while the session is joinable.
The live Gears of War E-Day Co Op setup is broader than the older two-player Gears structure because Bravo Squad has four playable characters: Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago, Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes. The Coalition designed the entire Campaign so all four can be controlled by players from the start.

How to start Gears of War E-Day Co Op
- Open Gears of War: E-Day.
- Select Campaign.
- Create a new save or load the host campaign.
- Open the party or invite controls from the Campaign lobby.
- Invite the friends you want in the squad.
- Wait for everyone to join before starting or resuming the chapter.
You can also allow friends into an active campaign session when the current game state is joinable, but building the party in the lobby is the simplest route for a full-session playthrough.
How many players are supported?
Gears of War E-Day Co Op supports up to four online Campaign players. Console split screen supports two local players on the same Xbox.
Horde Siege also uses cooperative play, but it is a separate multiplayer mode with four-player squads operating inside a larger twelve-player PvE battlefield.
Can split-screen players join an online squad?
Yes. A two-player console pair using Gears of War E-Day Co Op can occupy part of the four-player Campaign party while additional players join online.
This is useful for households with one Xbox because two local players do not need separate consoles simply to play with remote friends.
Cross-platform co-op
Xbox lists cross-platform co-op among the E-Day capabilities. Gears of War E-Day Co Op is therefore built around the broader Xbox and PC ecosystem rather than locking Campaign friends to one hardware box.
Xbox Play Anywhere also supports shared progression between eligible Xbox and Windows PC ownership. Steam is a separate store entitlement, so do not confuse cross-platform multiplayer support with a second free Xbox Store licence.
Do console players need Game Pass for online co-op?
Xbox states that online Campaign Gears of War E-Day Co Op and other online multiplayer features require a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer on console.
Local split screen is a different feature. If you only play two-player Campaign on one console locally, you are not creating an online four-player session.
Can every player choose a different difficulty?
Yes. Live cooperative Campaign allows players to use individual difficulty settings, so Gears of War E-Day Co Op does not force the whole squad onto one identical combat level.
This lets a mixed-skill group play together without making one person choose between being overwhelmed and making the campaign too easy for everyone else.
How campaign collectibles work
Collectible credit is shared across the current Gears of War E-Day Co Op group. When one player picks up a collectible, the other squad members receive credit for that discovery in the co-op session.
You do not need four people to interact with the same collectible one after another.
Who can players control?
The four-person Gears of War E-Day Co Op squad is built around Marcus, Dom, Mags and Lucas. The Coalition says the whole campaign can be played by any character from the start.
Marcus and Dom remain the central familiar pair, while Mags and Lucas fill out Bravo Squad with their own roles and story presence.
What if invites are not working?
If Gears of War E-Day Co Op invites fail, confirm everyone is running the same current build and that the host has loaded a joinable Campaign state. Restart the game after an update before repeatedly resending the same invite.
On Xbox, also confirm the required online subscription and current Xbox network status. An entitlement problem can look like an invite problem when one player cannot actually access online multiplayer.
Campaign co-op versus Horde Siege
Gears of War E-Day Co Op in Campaign is a four-player story experience. Horde Siege is a separate large-scale PvE mode where three four-player squads fight across shared maps and objectives.
Do not use Horde Siege’s twelve-player headline as the Campaign player count. Campaign stops at four online players.
Co-op summary
Gears of War E-Day Co Op supports four online Campaign players, two-player local split screen on console and mixed local-plus-online squad setups.
Create or load the host Campaign, invite friends from the lobby, make sure console players have the required online access and use the individual difficulty options so everyone can play at a comfortable level.
