The Sims is a game that has carved many memories in almost everyone’s childhood. This time, they’re expanding their reach by being free-to-play.

A recent announcement from EA confirmed that the hit simulation game, The Sims 4, will soon be free to play. This is just one of the many reasons why you should be part of the Sims community. The base game will be free to download starting October 18. This is good news for those who want to be part of the community but are on a tight budget.

With The Sims 4 going free to play, our team is more dedicated than ever to developing new and meaningful The Sims 4 experiences for our players and we will continue to develop and release packs, kits and Sims Delivery Express drops into the foreseeable future.

This leads to many questions, especially for those who have already purchased the base game. EA Games confirmed that they have also considered their loyal customers.

Perks of those who previously owned The Sims 4

The Sims 4 has been out since early September 2014. This means that the game has been out for more than six years in the market. As to how much the game has made since its release, Electronic Arts and Maxis, the game developer, have never released any official document confirming that. However, a Nielsen Super Data posted back in August of 2021 speculated that the game is one of the most downloaded games and “brings in approximately $462 Million annually.”

After being a smash hit, EA and Maxis are giving back to a loyal fanbase. According to the same article from Electronic Arts, anyone who has already purchased the game will benefit from the perks they can get as soon as they log in.

“EA Play and EA Play Pro members will receive an upgraded experience when member-only bundles of The Sims 4 go into The Play List on October 18. The Sims 4 EA Play Edition includes The Sims 4 Get To Work Expansion Pack, while the EA Play Pro Edition includes both The Sims 4 Get To Work Expansion Pack and The Sims 4 Toddler Stuff Pack.”

More perks of being a Simmer

Aside from the exclusives EA and Maxis are giving to their loyal fanbase, any player who has bought The Sims 4‘s base game from September 14 until October 17 will now get a Desert Luxe Kit. This kit gives a chill vibe to the natural landscape of the Southwestern desert. Here, Sims can relax and have fun while calling the modern and luxurious oasis their home.

The DLC also gives their fanbase an escape from the bustle as anyone who purchases the kit can now arrange for parties and intimate gatherings in a functional architectural landscape of safe space and cool environment.

The Desert Luxe Kit can be redeemed through the main menu until October 17. This promotional offer expires October 18, 2022, at 8:00 am PT.

The future of The Sims and the possibility of The Sims 5

Being a staple in the gaming community, The Sims is a success that is unlikely to stop. There have been rumors circulating the internet about the Sims 5 possibly being in the works previously and likely will be released in October. So far, EA or Maxis have given no official statements about this.

However, a previous post from The Washington Post back in February 2020 did mention that EA is “having conversations about the next generation.”

“We are thinking about how modern media is consumed today, and the significant disruptions we’ve seen in media in the last three to five years, whether it be TV media, movie media, music media. We’re thinking about similar opportunities to bring content to more people in more places on the most platforms as possible.

I certainly perceive The Sims to be incredibly accessible, very global.”

– Laura Miele, EA’s Chief Studios Officer

The part about bringing content to more people in more places on most platforms is certainly about the plan to make The Sims 4 free to play. If this stays true to plan, then there is a good chance that The Sims 5 is just around the corner.

The Sims™ 4 base game is available on PC via EA app or Origin, Mac via Origin, Steam, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One systems.
