Recently, Sony decided to merge PS Plus and PS Now together to create a three-tiered version of PlayStation Plus. The extra tiers are now known as PS Plus Premium and Extra, with them each offering a variety of perks.

This month is the first full month that the new PS Plus structure has been in place and it has been interesting to see how Sony has been working with this new system.

With August right around the corner we’re going to look ahead at what to expect, as well as what we’d like to see from PS Plus Premium and Extra in August 2022.

Sony has announced the next games that will be given to all PS Plus subscribers in August 2022. In total, there will be three games given away, with them all being playable on PS4 but two will feature upgraded PS5 versions for owners of that console.

Sony will be giving away the following games:

  • Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 Remastered (PS4/PS5)
  • Yakuza: Like A Dragon (PS4/PS5)
  • Little Nightmares (PS4)

It is worth noting that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 is the Cross-Gen Deluxe Bundle, which means that players can upgrade to the PS5 version for free, and it also includes the Deluxe Edition bonus content too.

  • ‘The Ripper’ skater from Powell-Peralta®
  • Unique retro outfits for Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero and Rodney Mullen
  • Unique retro content for the Create-A-Skater mode

Along with the announcement of the next PS Plus games, Sony has also announced that eight Yakuza games will be coming to PS Plus Premium and Extra throughout the rest of 2022.

This is similar to what Microsoft did with the games on Xbox Game Pass, which could indicate that the games will be leaving Game Pass in the near future.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon has been given away as part of PS Plus for August 2022, while Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, and Yakuza Kiwami 2 will be added to PS Plus Premium and Extra in 2022.

These will be followed by Yakuza 3 Remastered, Yakuza 4 Remastered, Yakuza 5 Remastered, and Yakuza 6: The Song of Life later in 2022.

Rollerdome game trial launching on August 16th

Rollerdome is a brand new third-person arena shooter with a twist, players are skating around in a beautiful cel-shaded universe.

This game has the potential to be a hidden gem and one we’re very eager to try. The good news is, we can for free as it has been announced that Rollerdome will be receiving a Game Trial at launch on August 16th which will be available to PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers.

What is the difference between PS Plus and Premium/Extra?

For many years Sony had two different services, PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now. PS Plus allowed gamers to play online and also gave players the ability to claim and download multiple games each month.

Whereas PlayStation Now was Sony’s gaming streaming service, which allowed players to stream hundreds of games for one monthly or yearly fee.

That has all changed now as the two have been merged together and PS Plus has now become tiered.

PS Plus Essential is the same PS Plus service that was available up until the merging of the two platforms.

When it comes to PS Plus Premium and Extra things get more confusing, as more perks are added depending on which version you choose to subscribe to.

Stray is the first game to launch on PS Plus Premium and Extra as a day one release, with the game also releasing on PC via Steam.

The game has taken the gaming world by storm, with it becoming an instant hit among players.

If you’re a fan of cats then this should be at the top of your to-play list.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake (PS4/PS5)

Final Fantasy 7 is one of the most iconic games of all time, and in 2020 the first part of the remake was finally released.

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake was released on PS4 but was later released on PS5 with upgraded visuals and new content as Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade. Both versions are available to play on PS Plus.

Marvel’s Spider-Man (PS4)

Marvel’s Spider-Man was one of the biggest titles to be released on the PlayStation 4 and the series has become of Sony’s most important.

The game was released on PS4 but saw a remastered port on PS5, however only the PS4 version is playable on PS Plus.

If you’re on PC you’re in luck as Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered will be released on Steam and Epic Games Store on August 12th.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (PS4/PS5)

Following on from Marvel’s Spider-Man, Miles Morales served as a PS5 launch title that helped showcase the power and capabilities of the next-gen console.

Miles Morales was released on the PS4 too and both versions are playable on PS Plus.

Resident Evil: Director’s Cut (PS4/PS5)

Moving over to some classic PS1 games and first is Resident Evil: Director’s Cut. If you’re a fan of Resident Evil then now is a great opportunity to revisit where it all started back in 1996.

Thankfully this isn’t THAT Director’s Cut with the worst soundtrack in video game history.

Syphon Filter (PS4/PS5)

Syphon Filter is one of the most underrated PS1 games and it is a shame the series faded away over time, it would be great to see it rebooted in the future.

This is one of the few PS1 games to receive a Trophy list and you can now earn a Platinum Trophy for Syphon Filter, which is enough of a reason to finally play this if you haven’t before.

Tekken 2 (PS4/PS5)

Although many will remember some of the newer entries more fondly, Tekken 2 was the gateway for millions of fans of the series.

Tekken 2 vastly improved upon the first game with smoother gameplay and much better visuals, although they have certainly aged by today’s standards.

If you’re a fan of Tekken then we urge you to play this, just judge it by PS1 standards as, like most 3D games of the era, it is a bit clunky but its still so much fun.
