The Fortnite Willow Hero returns to Save the World through The Door to Darkness, a Halloween questline about a ghost and a mysterious sealed door. Willow is a Legendary Outlander who gets more ability damage as her health drops. She can also summon a Phantasm when you use her Commander perk.
Don’t confuse her with One Wish Willow, the new Obsession Sprite in Battle Royale. That’s a separate collectible with completely different mechanics. If you’re after the Outlander, you’ll need to play Save the World and follow the seasonal quests.
How to unlock Willow
To earn the Fortnite Willow Hero, open Save the World and look for The Door to Darkness in the Quest Log. Follow the listed objectives until you’ve completed the story and claimed Willow. The returning questline also awards Gold and Candy.
Epic hasn’t published a complete, numbered walkthrough for every objective in this year’s version. Read the currently tracked quest before choosing a mission so you’re playing in the right location. You won’t get her from a random Battle Royale chest or through the Reload map rotation.
Fortnite Willow Hero: what Ghoulish Cackle does
Willow’s ordinary Hero perk is Ghoulish Cackle. It increases ability damage according to the amount of health you’re missing. That means the Fortnite Willow Hero can hit harder with abilities after taking damage, rather than getting the same bonus at full health.
It’s an ability bonus, not a universal increase to assault rifle or shotgun damage. Willow suits loadouts that use damaging abilities frequently. You also need to survive the fight, so deliberately draining almost all of your health just for a higher bonus may not be worthwhile.
How Ghoulish Cackle+ works
Make Willow your Commander and the perk becomes Ghoulish Cackle+. The missing-health damage bonus remains, but ability eliminations also have a chance to summon an Energy-damage Phantasm that attacks a nearby enemy.
Willow’s Ghoulish Cackle Commander perk can summon a Phantasm after an ability elimination. Weapon eliminations alone don’t trigger that perk, so use her abilities to finish enemies when you want to take advantage of the extra damage.
Support versus Commander
Use the Fortnite Willow Hero in a support slot when another Outlander is the centre of your build and you mainly want more ability damage while injured. You keep your chosen Commander’s main perk, but Willow can still contribute when the fight gets rough.
Put her in the Commander slot if you want the additional Phantasm mechanic and regularly finish enemies with abilities. It is particularly interesting during missions with waves of Husks, where you have plenty of potential eliminations to trigger the effect.
How Willow compares with Grave Feather
Grave Feather also has a Phantasm-related ability, but the trigger is different. His Ghoulslinger+ perk gives Lefty and Righty extra Critical Rating and a 40% chance to summon a Phantasm when those attacks critically hit.
For the Fortnite Willow Hero, the Phantasm chance comes from ability eliminations. For Grave Feather, it comes from critical hits with a particular Soldier ability. They both use ghostly attacks, but that doesn’t make their loadouts interchangeable.
Does the One Wish Willow Sprite unlock her?
No. The One Wish Willow Sprite in Battle Royale steals equipped Sprites from defeated enemies, knocks nearby opponents away when you take damage and marks you on the map if you remove it. None of those actions progresses The Door to Darkness.
You can ignore the Battle Royale crossover completely if the Fortnite Willow Hero is what you want. Stay in the Save the World Quest Log and follow the returning Halloween story instead.
What to do after unlocking her
Once you claim Willow, open your Hero collection and read Ghoulish Cackle. Try her in support if you’ve already built around a favourite Commander, or lead with her for the Phantasm chance. Compare ability damage while at different health levels without putting yourself at unnecessary risk.
The Fortnite Willow Hero is returning content. If you already earned her in a previous Halloween season, check your collection before working through the quests solely for a duplicate Hero.
