Fortnite map evolution tells the story of the Battle Royale island from its original 2017 layout to the changing worlds of Chapter 7 in 2026. Over the years, the map has been struck by meteors, divided by water, covered in snow, overrun by chrome and rebuilt completely for new chapters. Some places lasted years. Others disappeared almost as quickly as they arrived.
This illustrated Fortnite map evolution archive starts with the original Chapter 1 maps and brings the chapters together in one place. Open a chapter below to see its map history, then follow the links to detailed season maps and changes. There are separate guides for Fortnite OG and modern Battle Royale, because a returning location is not necessarily an exact recreation of its first appearance.
Fortnite map evolution timeline: Every chapter from 2017 to 2026
Pick a chapter to explore its biggest geographical changes. Chapter 1 opens a ten-season gallery of original historical maps. Later chapters link to their chapter and season galleries as they are built out, so the timeline remains easy to navigate instead of loading every image at once.
Chapter 1 (2017–2019): The original island
Fortnite map evolution began with a modest original island. Ten seasons introduced Tilted Towers, Dusty Divot, Paradise Palms, snowy mountains, a volcano and eventually Rift Zones. Comparing the map from Season 1 with the final Season X snapshot shows how different the same island became.

Chapter 2 (2019–2021): A new island and the flood
Chapter 2 introduced a fresh island with Sweaty Sands, Misty Meadows, Slurpy Swamp and the waterways around the Agency. Season 3’s flood submerged much of the island, changing which routes and buildings remained accessible before the waters receded. Few moments in Fortnite map evolution changed the available terrain so abruptly. Later seasons added Marvel landmarks, a central desert and the Cubes’ return.
The original Apollo island with beaches, waterways and new named towns. The Agency and later the flood transformed familiar travel routes.
Chapter 3 (2021–2022): The flipped island
A new island arrived after The End, with Daily Bugle, Greasy Grove and Sanctuary among its important destinations. Snow melted, revealing more of the island. The fight between the Seven and the Imagined Order brought new installations and damage, before chrome spread across the landscape in Season 4. Fortnite map evolution took another turn when the island was destroyed during Fracture.
The flipped island introduced snowy terrain, Sanctuary and the Daily Bugle. Its map later saw the war, new biomes and spreading chrome.
Chapter 4 (2022–2023): New terrain, a city and a jungle
Chapter 4 began with a rebuilt island and Medieval landmarks such as The Citadel. Mega City and a Japanese-inspired biome followed in Season 2, while the jungle opened up in Season 3. Across Fortnite map evolution, Chapter 4 stands out for the contrast between medieval villages, neon urban areas and dense jungle.
A fresh island formed with The Citadel, medieval villages and snowy highlands. Mega City and a dramatic jungle expansion followed.
Chapter 5 (2023–2024): Mediterranean towns and the Wasteland
The Chapter 5 island introduced an extensive railway, luxurious estates and towns such as Ritzy Riviera and Pleasant Piazza. Mount Olympus brought mythology to the map, and Season 3 later turned a large area into a vehicle-focused wasteland. Fortnite map evolution in Chapter 5 continued with more themed landmarks in Season 4.

Chapter 6 (2024–2025): Oninoshima and its changing regions
Chapter 6 began with a Japanese-inspired island and distinct regions around places such as Seaport City. As the seasons progressed, new themed areas and changing points of interest arrived. Fortnite map evolution in Chapter 6 shows how a distinct island can keep changing through a run of seasons.
Chapter 6 opened with its Japanese-inspired Oninoshima island. Its subsequent seasons brought new themed regions and redesigned POIs.

Special Fortnite maps: OG, Remix and Springfield

Fortnite map evolution: Which chapter changed the island most?
Chapter 1 is memorable because it established the original landscape and then transformed it bit by bit, from the meteor strike to the snow and volcano. Chapter 2’s flooded map stands out for how directly the terrain affected rotation and landing spots. Chapter 3’s island flip and the complete resets between chapters show the other side of Fortnite’s history: sometimes Epic changed a familiar map, and sometimes it built a new one.
A Fortnite map evolution comparison is more revealing when it includes several snapshots per season. For a fair comparison, it helps to look at the changes within each season. A launch map may show a very different island from the one players remember at the season’s end. The individual season guides show the launch maps and explain the landmarks, story events and later updates that changed each island.
Fortnite map evolution and Fortnite OG recreations
Fortnite map evolution also includes returning islands, so the OG and Remix pictures belong alongside the main chapter maps.
Fortnite OG revisits familiar seasons and landmarks, but those live updates belong to a separate return-to-Chapter-1 timeline. A map screenshot from original Season X in 2019 should not be passed off as an image of Fortnite OG Season X in 2026, even when the two share names and POIs. The historical series uses original map snapshots with patch labels wherever possible.
For modern returns to older locations, visit our Fortnite OG Season X map changes guide or the Fortnite OG Season 8 map changes guide. The original history and the recreations deserve separate comparisons, so you can see how a familiar landmark looked when it first appeared and how it returned years later.
Fortnite map evolution: How the historical pictures are organised
The images above show each chapter’s first season, with its version number underneath. The Chapter 1 guide opens another ten historical snapshots. Every later chapter has its own history to explore, including season launches and the changes that happened between them. Springfield maps compared: v38.00 to v38.11
Springfield’s launch map and the two later updates are shown separately. Open each version to see how the Simpsons mini-season island developed during November 2025. This was a distinct island between Chapter 6 and Chapter 7, rather than another numbered season on Oninoshima.
