Enshrouded missing saves after update 1.0 don’t automatically mean your characters or worlds have been deleted. Keen Games has changed where local data is stored, moved older saves into a new format and split Local and Steam Cloud saves into different menu tabs.

That combination can make a familiar save appear to be gone when you’re simply looking in the wrong tab. It can also cause confusion for players checking the old Windows folder after updating. Before creating a replacement world or copying files around, follow these recovery checks in order.

Enshrouded Hotfix 1.0.0.2: Missing characters after save migration

Keen Games released Hotfix 1.0.0.2 on October 16, 2026 (build 1269579) to fix a rare crash during save migration. The crash could happen when loading a corrupted character save. Rather than letting that save crash the game, the hotfix now skips migration of the affected corrupted character.

If you’re experiencing Enshrouded missing saves and the character is absent from both Local and Steam Cloud tabs, this could explain it. The developer says it is working on another fix to migrate and repair those corrupted characters. Hotfix 1.0.0.2 does not yet restore the missing characters, and there is no confirmed manual conversion method. Avoid overwriting or deleting old save data while waiting.

The hotfix also fixes world settings that couldn’t be changed, several crashes during fast travel, Adventure Share browsing, factory placement, water simulation and other situations. Source: Keen Games’ October 16 hotfix notes.

Check the Local and Steam Cloud tabs

Enshrouded missing saves

Open the character selection menu and check the new Local and Steam Cloud tabs. Then check both tabs in world selection. A world you’ve used for months might still be under the cloud tab, while a different character is stored locally. Version 1.0 no longer shows the two categories in one combined list.

This is the quickest Enshrouded missing saves check because you don’t have to alter the files or disable Steam Cloud. If the missing character appears in the second tab, use that save instead of creating a new one. Don’t interpret an empty Local list as proof that the Cloud data was wiped.

Find the new Enshrouded 1.0 Windows save folder

Keen Games gives the new local folder as C:\Users\WINDOWSUSER\Saved Games\keen games\Enshrouded\default. Replace WINDOWSUSER with your Windows account name. In File Explorer, open your user folder, then Saved Games, keen games, Enshrouded and default.

Make a copy of the whole folder before moving or editing anything. The updated format and path are different from Early Access. Enshrouded missing saves can seem especially alarming if you’re inspecting an older folder that no longer receives new files. The current location is the first place to look for the local version.

How the automatic save migration works

When version 1.0 detects older save files from version 0.8 or below, the game creates a backup and converts them into the new format automatically. The new data structure is smaller, and different file counts don’t necessarily mean worlds have disappeared. Let the first migration finish rather than quitting during the conversion.

If you’re checking Enshrouded missing saves after that first login, go through both character and world tabs again. If something still looks wrong, preserve the automatically created backup. Don’t paste old save data over new files without knowing exactly which version you’re replacing.

How to fix read-only save warnings

For Enshrouded missing saves, the 1.0 client can warn you when it cannot overwrite a character or world save. One possible cause is a file marked read-only in Windows. This is slightly different from a save that doesn’t appear at all: the save can exist but the game may be unable to record changes.

Exit the game, back up the relevant folder and inspect its file properties and permissions. Only change a read-only attribute when you know the file belongs to the affected save. For Enshrouded missing saves, do not delete the entire Saved Games folder simply because one file cannot be written.

Steam Cloud synchronization checks

Confirm you’re signed into the Steam account that owns the character or world and check the Cloud tab in the game. If Steam reports a conflict, don’t blindly choose an older file when the other version may contain recent progress. Preserve any local copy before resolving conflicting versions.

Keen Games made Local and Steam Cloud selection explicit in 1.0. For Enshrouded missing saves, work out which source held the save before you start switching Steam’s synchronization options. A menu categorisation change doesn’t require turning cloud sync off across your entire library.

What not to do while searching for a missing world

Avoid creating several replacement characters with the same name, deleting old folders or repeatedly overwriting backups. If the problem is just a Local/Cloud tab difference, those actions introduce risks that weren’t there to begin with. On multiplayer servers, world hosting files and personal character saves may also live in different places.

Make a note of any warning message and the client version. Enshrouded missing saves that persist after checking the correct tabs and the new folder may need support assistance, especially if migration or synchronization actually failed. Keeping an untouched backup gives you more recovery options.

Enshrouded missing saves: the recovery checklist

Check Local and Steam Cloud character tabs, check both world tabs, verify the new Windows Saved Games directory, allow migration to finish and investigate any read-only warning. If the world still isn’t listed, back up everything before making manual changes and give support the precise details of the save source.
