The Dune Awakening character transfer system changed substantially with Update 1.5. Multiplayer characters are now presented from a character-centred main menu, and eligible characters can be used across more than one server type. The catch is that some moves are one-way, so changing destination without checking the rules can permanently remove the option to return to an official world.
The safest way to think about Dune Awakening character transfer is that official servers are the most restricted trust boundary. An official character can stay within official servers or leave for a private/self-hosted environment, but once that character leaves the official environment it cannot be brought back. Single-player characters are completely separate.
Dune Awakening character transfer rules

| Character starts on | Where it can go | Can it return? |
|---|---|---|
| Single-player | Single-player only | Not applicable |
| Official server | Other official servers, or private/self-hosted | Official-to-official remains valid; leaving official for private/self-hosted is one-way |
| Private server | Self-hosted server | No return to private under the current published rule |
Those restrictions are the core of the current Dune Awakening character transfer rules published by Funcom. They are more important than the old idea of choosing one permanent Sietch, because the new Characters tab is designed to let multiplayer characters choose where to continue while still protecting official-server integrity.
How to move a Dune Awakening character between servers
For a current multiplayer Dune Awakening character transfer, open the Characters area from the main menu, select the multiplayer character and choose the option to change where that character plays. Funcom’s 1.5 documentation describes server choice as part of the character flow rather than requiring a new character every time you change an eligible world.
- Back up every base you want to keep with the Base Reconstruction Tool.
- Back up vehicles you want to carry using the Vehicle Backup Tool.
- Return to the character/server selection flow and choose a destination allowed for that character type.
- Read the destination warning carefully before confirming a move from an official server to private/self-hosted play.
- After the move, restore backed-up bases and vehicles where the destination rules allow it.
Back up your base before a character transfer
A Dune Awakening character transfer does not mean every placed object simply appears at the new location. Funcom tells players to use the Base Reconstruction Tool first. It can hold up to three complete base snapshots, letting you rebuild later and making it much safer to leave a world or take an extended break.
The snapshot system is bound to the character and cannot be lost through ordinary character death. If a base depends on a very specific location, you may still need to find suitable space on the destination world before rebuilding it.
What happens to vehicles?
Vehicles should also be backed up before a Dune Awakening character transfer. The Vehicle Backup Tool is part of the portability workflow and can store eligible vehicles for transfer. Separately, Update 1.5 lets players recover destroyed vehicles for up to 30 days for a Solari fee and a minor durability penalty, which reduces the risk of losing a valuable vehicle around a move.
Can you transfer an official character to a private server and back?
No. This is the most important Dune Awakening character transfer warning. Funcom explicitly allows an official-server character to move to a private or self-hosted server, but the character cannot then return to the official-server environment. The restriction exists to protect the integrity of official progression.
If you only want a quieter experience but may want official multiplayer later, creating another character is safer than moving your established official character away from official servers.
Can single-player characters move to multiplayer?
No. Dune Awakening character transfer does not apply to the dedicated single-player mode. Solo characters remain exclusive to single-player and multiplayer characters cannot be imported into that mode. Read our Dune Awakening single player guide if you are deciding whether to start a separate solo save.
How Update 1.5 changes older transfer advice
Older Dune Awakening character transfer guides may describe the January transfer system, transfer tokens or a character tied more closely to one Sietch. Update 1.5 puts characters at the centre of the menu and broadens server choice, so the current server-type restrictions above are the rules to use for the September version.
Funcom’s console and single-player announcement explains the character-centred design, and the Update 1.5 overview confirms the current one-way restrictions.
