Destiny 2 unvaulting is Bungie’s plan to restore the Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris and Warmind campaigns, along with their Strikes, Raids and Raid Lairs. Menagerie is on the list too, complete with reprised rewards. Bungie says this first wave of content will be available to all players.

The announcement came on 29 October 2026, but there’s no new campaign to launch just yet. Bungie has given players a clear list of what it’s working on first, what it would like to bring back afterwards and what isn’t part of the plan.

Destiny 2 unvaulting: which campaigns and activities are returning?

The priority is getting the early campaigns back into the game. Players who joined later missed some huge moments in Destiny’s story, and Bungie wants those chapters to be playable again. Here’s its first-pass list:

First-pass targetContent
CampaignsRed War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris and Warmind
StrikesStrikes from those expansions
RaidsRaids and Raid Lairs associated with those releases
MenagerieThe activity, with reprised rewards

This first pass covers the activities themselves. Free-roam destinations and old seasonal content sit on separate lists, so don’t expect everything from those expansions to return together.

Are Red War, Forsaken, Warmind and Curse of Osiris coming back?

Yes. Bungie’s list includes all four. Red War was Destiny 2’s launch campaign, Curse of Osiris and Warmind came afterwards, and Forsaken followed in the game’s second year. Bringing them back would give newer Guardians a way to experience those stories firsthand instead of piecing them together from recaps.

The work is still at an early stage. Bungie hasn’t announced which campaign will arrive first or how the missions will appear in-game. For now, these are confirmed targets for restoration, not newly playable quests.

Is Destiny 2 unvaulting free for all players?

Yes, Bungie says the first pass will be available to all players. That includes the four named campaigns, their associated Strikes and Raids, and Menagerie. You don’t need to purchase an old expansion today in anticipation of the project.

The announcement covers access to returning activities, not a catalogue of free gear. Bungie will share more about rewards and how to access the content closer to launch.

Is Menagerie coming back, and what about its rewards?

Menagerie is one of the most welcome names on the list. Bungie says the activity is included in the initial Destiny 2 unvaulting pass, with reprised rewards, after years of requests from players.

Which weapons those rewards include is still to be announced. There’s no new Menagerie loot table to follow yet, and Bungie hasn’t given the activity its own return date.

Destiny 2 unvaulting stretch goals and destinations

Bungie is also looking at additional content it calls stretch goals. Some could be ready for the unvaulting launch; others might arrive later. None is guaranteed as part of that first wave.

Possible extraExamples Bungie mentioned
Free-roam destinationsPublic Events, Lost Sectors and Escalation Protocol
Seasonal activitiesSundial from Season 9 through The Coil from Season 23
Raid weaponsUpdates to legacy Raid and Raid Lair rewards
PvP mapsRetired Crucible maps

That distinction matters most for destinations. Warmind’s story missions are on the main list, but its free-roam activities, including Escalation Protocol, belong to the stretch goals. Likewise, returning a Raid doesn’t automatically mean its weapons receive an overhaul.

What isn’t included in Destiny 2 unvaulting?

Bungie has also named content it currently has no route to restore or update: a refreshed New Light experience, seasonal story missions, the Kell’s Grave Gambit map and seasonal hubs such as the Eliksni Quarter.

If you’re hoping to replay a complete season from start to finish, this announcement doesn’t provide that option. The immediate priority is the expansion campaigns and activities.

Destiny 2 unvaulting release date and development timetable

Bungie hasn’t announced when the restored content will become playable. The project received initial approval for planning in June 2026 and was fully greenlit in September. The team is now testing how to port the old content while meeting its quality standards.

That proof-of-work stage is expected to last until roughly January or February 2027. Bungie then anticipates around 12 months of full production to finish the porting process. It’s a development estimate, not a confirmed launch window; the studio hasn’t said whether campaigns will arrive individually or together.

Bungie is targeting February 2027 for its next major Destiny update to players. That is a news milestone, not a release date. Our Destiny 2 future roadmap guide covers the Celebration and Legacy projects discussed alongside unvaulting.

Why the Destiny 2 unvaulting project matters

Bungie’s head of product, Josh Deane, acknowledged that removing essential campaigns damaged the experience and players’ trust. Restoring those stories is the studio’s starting point as it works out what comes next for Destiny.

For players, the takeaway is simple: Destiny 2 unvaulting starts with four campaigns, related Strikes and Raids, and Menagerie. More destinations and activities are being considered, but the first playable return is still some way off.
