Best RPGs of 2026: 10 Games Worth Playing Right Now

The best RPGs of 2026 cover far more than fantasy swords and long cutscenes. This year has given us punishing samurai fights, old-fashioned turn-based journeys, tactical cats and an MMO where you can fly across an enormous world. Choosing the next game to lose yourself in depends almost entirely on what you enjoy doing between the big story moments.

This list only includes games released by 14 October 2026, so nothing is being ranked on a trailer alone. We’ve checked the launch platforms and main gameplay systems, and picked titles for different kinds of player. There are obvious favourites here, but also a couple that deserve attention even if they won’t make everybody’s top ten.

1. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined: Best traditional RPG

Release: 5 February 2026 (6 February on Steam).

If you want an enormous adventure that doesn’t rely on twitch reactions, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is the place to begin. The story starts on a small island before expanding into a journey across lost lands and different periods of their history. Square Enix’s remake uses a lovely handcrafted, diorama-like visual style, but it also does plenty to make the original’s sprawling adventure easier to get into.

Its best addition is Moonlighting, which lets characters combine two vocations rather than sticking to one. You can experiment with spells, roles and special abilities without giving up the series’ approachable turn-based battles. Among the best RPGs of 2026, it’s our pick for a classic quest you can enjoy at your own pace.

2. Nioh 3: Best RPG for tough action combat

Release: 6 February 2026.

Nioh 3 is for the player who doesn’t mind getting flattened by a boss while learning exactly how to beat it. Team NINJA’s latest samurai adventure has more open-field exploration than its predecessors, with hostile areas, powerful yokai and plenty of equipment to build around.

The difference this time is the ability to switch between Samurai and Ninja styles during combat. Samurai favours direct clashes and well-timed deflections, while Ninja trades that approach for faster movement, aerial attacks and evasive techniques. That gives you a real reason to experiment instead of settling on the first weapon you like. When comparing the best RPGs of 2026 for combat, Nioh 3 is the demanding option; it won’t be everybody’s idea of a relaxing evening.

3. Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection: Best for monster collecting

Release: 13 March 2026.

Monster Hunter Stories 3 isn’t another version of Monster Hunter Wilds. Here, you play a Rider who raises and bonds with monsters, then brings them into an RPG adventure. The story follows tension between Azuria and Vermeil, with twin Rathalos tied to a dangerous chapter of the world’s history.

The appeal is putting together a monster team and watching the creatures become partners rather than targets. It has the familiar Monster Hunter world and creatures, but a completely different pace from the main action games. For players searching the best RPGs of 2026 on Switch 2, it’s an especially appealing alternative to Dragon Quest’s more traditional party adventure.

4. The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon: Best for long-running stories

English release: 15 January 2026.

Trails beyond the Horizon is built for people who love the detail and history of a sprawling fantasy world. The series has spent many games developing its nations, rivalries and returning characters, and this instalment brings several of those threads together. When somebody appears from an earlier game, it actually matters that you recognise them.

That makes it an awkward starting point for a newcomer choosing between the best RPGs of 2026. Although it belongs among the best RPGs of 2026 for established Trails fans, we’d send someone completely new to the genre towards Dragon Quest first. If you’re already invested in this series, its character reunions and broader story are the main attraction.

5. Esoteric Ebb: Best RPG for choices and dialogue

Release: 3 March 2026.

Esoteric Ebb is the wonderfully strange alternative to a blockbuster RPG. You’re a cleric wrapped up in a political conspiracy, with a goblin companion and tabletop-style dice rolls helping shape what happens next. Conversation, investigation and the consequences of bad decisions are just as important as any fight.

It is a good choice when you want to role-play an actual personality instead of simply collecting increasingly powerful swords. Some outcomes go wrong in ways that make the story more entertaining, which is half the charm. Of the best RPGs of 2026, this is the one to try if your favourite gaming memories involve an absurd conversation you couldn’t have scripted.

6. Code Vein II: Best anime-styled Soulslike

Release: 30 January 2026.

Code Vein II returns to challenging action RPG battles, but with an anime-inspired cast and a story that moves between past and present. Its companion-focused Partner System gives the people fighting alongside you a much bigger role than background decoration. You also have plenty of options for character creation, weapons and combat builds.

Nioh 3 and Code Vein II both feature among the best RPGs of 2026 for players who enjoy difficult encounters, but they scratch different itches. Choose Nioh for its Samurai/Ninja combat changes, or Code Vein II if companions and character-driven dark fantasy sound more interesting. Neither is a good pick if you’re hoping to avoid learning enemy attack patterns.

7. Mewgenics: Best tactical RPG to keep replaying

Release: 10 February 2026.

Yes, the cat game belongs here. Mewgenics combines turn-based tactical battles with breeding mechanics that pass traits between generations. You’re not just building a team for one dungeon: you’re trying to shape the cats that will make up your future teams as well.

Drafted abilities, items and unpredictable genetics make experimentation a huge part of the fun. It’s more about systems, surprising combinations and what happens next time than following one cinematic story from start to finish. If those things appeal, it could easily be your most-played entry in the best RPGs of 2026 list.

8. Disgaea Mayhem: Best for grinding and builds

Release: 23 July 2026.

Disgaea Mayhem is an action RPG spin-off, not another grid-based tactics release. You control a mercenary called N.A., work for a princess who desperately wants her pudding back, and switch between weapons associated with seven different classes as you fight.

The familiar Disgaea obsession with numbers is still there. You can head into the Item World to improve equipment, reincarnate for better base stats and pass bills through the Dark Chocolate Assembly. Its silliness won’t appeal to every RPG fan, but it earns its spot among the best RPGs of 2026 for players who enjoy making already ridiculous builds even stronger.

9. Arknights: Endfield: Best free-to-play RPG

Release: 22 January 2026.

Arknights: Endfield has an unusual split personality, and that’s why it stands out. You explore and fight using a party of characters, but also work with industrial systems, production lines and resources. Setting up the next part of your operation can be as interesting as preparing for combat.

It’s free to start, and its ongoing events add reasons to come back. That also means live-service progression and character-acquisition systems, which won’t suit everybody. Still, the mix of combat and factory management makes it one of the best RPGs of 2026 for someone who likes solving logistical problems between adventures.

10. AION 2: Best new MMORPG

Global release: 5 October 2026.

Maybe you don’t want a solo campaign at all. AION 2 lets you spend time in a persistent world with other people, tackling dungeons, exploring, fighting in PvP and developing a character over the long haul. Flight is a central part of how you move through its enormous environment, not just a cosmetic trick.

It’s the most recent launch in our best RPGs of 2026 selection, so its online world is still particularly new. That comes with all the usual MMO considerations: group content, recurring systems and a lot more time investment than a self-contained adventure. If you prefer to play offline at your own pace, start elsewhere.

Which of the best RPGs of 2026 should you play first?

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is our all-round recommendation for a classic single-player RPG, while Nioh 3 is the standout for players who enjoy difficult real-time combat. For a lighter approach to monster raising, try Monster Hunter Stories 3; for an unusual, conversation-heavy adventure, go straight to Esoteric Ebb.

If you want a game that can keep changing for months, Mewgenics offers endlessly different tactical combinations, Arknights: Endfield mixes action with production systems, and AION 2 provides a large multiplayer world. The best RPGs of 2026 aren’t all trying to do the same thing, and that’s a very good reason to try one outside your usual favourites.
