SEVERANCE possession evidence was removed from the game on October 25, 2026, in update v0.9.4.1 just before full release. Version 1.0 kept that change. Possession no longer appears as a usable ghost identification clue, and several ghosts now have different evidence combinations.
Ghost behaviour still matters just as much as before. The developer left each ghost’s behavioural clues intact, but reshuffled several evidence combinations. That is why old identification charts no longer give reliable answers.
SEVERANCE possession evidence: why it was removed

Sykes Games explained that SEVERANCE possession evidence was the only one of the original eight evidence types without a unique ghost behaviour attached to it. With eight possible evidence categories, finding just two clues could narrow an investigation to a very small set of ghosts, reducing the need to study their behaviour.
The SEVERANCE possession evidence removal makes investigations less predictable. Two confirmed clues can leave several possible ghosts, so use the tablet’s elimination system and continue searching until their evidence or behaviour separates them.
When did Possession disappear from SEVERANCE?
The change arrived with v0.9.4.1 on October 25, one day before the October 26 full release. It is part of the current 1.0 evidence system.
The SEVERANCE possession evidence change also came with a rebalance of several ghost evidence combinations. A ghost you identified using Possession and one other piece of evidence in Early Access may require a different set of clues now.
Which parts of ghost identification still work?

The SEVERANCE possession evidence removal did not change ghost-specific behavioural clues. What a particular ghost does, and the unique behaviours you learned to watch for, remain useful. The changes are to the evidence combinations in the identification system.
You still collect evidence with investigative equipment such as an EMF Reader, UV light, voice recorder, video equipment and other tools available in your loadout. Version 1.0 revised the equipment tiers, but did not remove the entire investigation process.
The tablet is where you should record your current findings. Its evidence-selection icons were updated before launch, so check the actual options displayed in your game rather than copying an old screenshot that still lists SEVERANCE possession evidence.
How to identify ghosts after Possession was removed
Start by taking a mix of evidence equipment into the location. Watch where the ghost interacts, check each device there and record only confirmed readings. A strange sound alone isn’t enough to settle the ghost’s identity.
Open the investigation tablet after collecting evidence. Mark the findings you have and rule out ghosts whose evidence contradicts them. With SEVERANCE possession evidence removed, you may need another reading or a distinctive behaviour before making your final choice.
If two ghosts remain, compare their documented behaviours. Observe the ghost’s activity while keeping your escape route clear, then choose the identification supported by the combination of clues.
Do Salt footprints count as a ghost’s UV evidence?
Sykes Games changed Salt behaviour ahead of 1.0: a ghost stepping in Salt now leaves UV footprints, but those Salt-created prints do not count as Wraith or Hidden evidence. This distinction is easy to miss when comparing observations with an old evidence guide.
Salt is useful for tracking movement, not for proving Wraith or Hidden. Even when a footprint glows under UV light, that Salt-created mark doesn’t count as either ghost’s evidence.
Does the Possessed Doll still exist?
Yes, as a lobby reward. Sykes Games awarded a Possessed Doll keepsake to anyone who had played before Version 1.0. The doll remembers the old evidence mechanic, but it is not a reason to add Possession back to your evidence selection.
The Possessed Doll is a souvenir for people who played during Early Access. It doesn’t appear as an investigation clue, and finding it in the lobby does not mean SEVERANCE possession evidence has returned.
Are the new Specter, Kisi and Strigoi affected?
Version 1.0 added Specter, Kisi and Strigoi alongside the evidence overhaul. The developer confirmed that several existing ghost evidence combinations changed as well. Use the current game tablet to compare all possible types rather than assigning a combination from a pre-release chart to one of the newcomers.
For returning players, this is the change to remember: SEVERANCE possession evidence is gone, several combinations changed, and ghost behaviour remains useful. Check the tablet in the 1.0 build, then read our full patch notes for the other launch changes.
