SEVERANCE crucifix protection activates when a ghost attempts to begin a hunt within three metres of the item. You can keep the Crucifix in your hand or place it on the floor; both can work. When the protection activates, the Crucifix burns, stopping the hunt attempt in its effective area.
The Crucifix was reworked in September and received an important fix on October 28, 2026. It only needs to be close to the ghost when the hunt begins; leaving it elsewhere in the building won’t cover you.
SEVERANCE crucifix range and activation explained
The SEVERANCE crucifix works within a three-metre radius. Sykes Games confirms that it can activate while held or placed on the ground, burning to stop a hunt from starting in that range.
Its job is to prevent the hunt at the moment it starts. Carrying a Crucifix into an already active chase is not the same as placing protection near the ghost before the hunt.
How to use a Crucifix while holding it
Add a Crucifix to your loadout before entering the location. Hold it near the ghost’s active area if you’re still moving around, rather than dropping it immediately at the entrance.
You can move while holding the SEVERANCE crucifix, keeping protection close to your current investigation area. For a fixed position, placing it lets you see exactly what the three-metre zone covers.
How to place a Crucifix and check its range
You can also throw the Crucifix onto the floor. Sykes Games added a visible range indicator: throwing the item briefly highlights its three-metre protection radius for two seconds. Use the display to judge the area before continuing your investigation.
Place a SEVERANCE crucifix near the room or corridor where the ghost is active. Its radius is small enough that an item by the front door may not reach a hunt beginning farther inside. The outline lasts only two seconds after you throw it.
Is the Crucifix consumed when it burns?
The SEVERANCE crucifix is a consumable. Sykes Games specifically says unused consumables are returned to players who survive an investigation, and uses a Crucifix that has not burned as an example. Once it burns to stop a hunt, it has been used.
If you survive an investigation and your SEVERANCE crucifix never burns, it is returned with your other unused consumables. A Crucifix that burns has been used.
Check the Equipment Store and your contract loadout on the lobby laptop before leaving. Version 1.0 reset old equipment purchases and changed item prices, so rebuild the loadout using the current shop.
Why did the Crucifix burn but a hunt still start?
That was a documented bug immediately after the full release. On October 28, 2026, update v1.0.0.2 fixed a rare case where the Crucifix could burn while the ghost still started hunting. Update the game before assessing whether the protection failed.
If the item burns but a hunt still starts, first make sure you’re on the latest version. Then check whether the ghost began hunting within the three-metre zone. Use the in-game bug-report tool if the post-fix behaviour still matches the October 28 issue.
How Crucifix protection fits into Version 1.0 equipment
The developer’s published Crucifix rework specifies a three-metre radius. Use the two-second visual indicator to judge placement; don’t assume the radius changes merely because Version 1.0 introduced equipment tiers elsewhere.
A SEVERANCE crucifix only protects its immediate area when a hunt begins. It won’t make an entire location safe. Keep a route out of the room and use other protective equipment when needed.
Best way to use a Crucifix in Version 1.0
Identify where activity is happening, then decide whether you’re going to carry protection with you or place it in the room. Carrying makes it easier to adapt while moving; placing lets you see the two-second range outline and protect a specific area.
