Enshrouded Gear Level 55 is the maximum fully upgraded equipment level in version 1.0, even though your character stops levelling at 50. A level-50 Legendary weapon can reach level 55 because it has five upgrade steps. The extra levels aren’t earned through character XP or by simply moving into Cinder’s Cradle.
The important distinction is the item’s starting level and rarity. A weapon found at level 45 cannot reach level 55 when you upgrade it, and a Common item cannot receive as many upgrades as a Legendary. Here’s how to check the ceiling on your own gear, spend Runes properly and avoid upgrading an item you’ll replace immediately.

Enshrouded Gear Level 55 explained
In Enshrouded 1.0, the character cap is 50 and the fully upgraded gear cap is 55. Look at the item tooltip before spending anything: it shows the item’s current level, how many upgrade steps are available and the bonuses attached to the locked steps. For weapons, the damage can grow as the item level rises. Rarity mainly determines the number of upgrade steps, rather than giving a guaranteed increase in damage by itself.
Enshrouded Gear Level 55 by rarity
The rarity ladder is straightforward. Common items have one upgrade, Uncommon two, Rare three, Epic four and Legendary five. Therefore a level-50 Common reaches 51, while a level-50 Legendary can reach 55. A Legendary picked up at 40 only reaches 45 when all five levels are unlocked. You need a sufficiently high-level base item to reach the actual cap.
Enshrouded Gear Level 55: Where to upgrade
Visit the craftsperson responsible for your equipment. The Blacksmith Oswald Anders handles swords, axes, hammers and other melee weapons; the Hunter handles bows and daggers; the Alchemist handles wands and staffs. Interact with the NPC, choose the craft-and-upgrade option and open the Item Upgrades tab. The item must be in your backpack or action bar to appear in that list.
Enshrouded Gear Level 55: Unlocking upgrades
Select the item and read its next locked level before pressing Unlock. Each step costs Runes and must be bought in sequence. The upgrade screen shows the next damage change, the enhancement being opened and the actual cost for your current item. Prices vary with item level and world settings; a 46-Rune example on an early sword should never be treated as a price for a level-50 Legendary.

Upgrading armour and shields
Enshrouded 1.0 also expands upgrading to shields, armour and rings. The same basic principle applies: equip or carry the eligible item, use the listed upgrade location and unlock its available steps. Check the actual tooltip, because some equipment families and qualities follow different enhancement paths. You cannot force an item beyond the steps listed on its card.
Enshrouded Gear Level 55: Legendary Rune costs
Legendary items require Legendary Runes in addition to ordinary Runes for their later upgrades. The 1.0 upgrade system moves that requirement one step later, onto Legendary upgrades four and five. The Blacksmith can turn 25 ordinary Runes into one Legendary Rune once you’ve obtained Legendary Runes before. Unlike normal Runes, Legendary Runes spent enhancing equipment cannot be recovered by salvaging it.
Salvaging gear for Runes
To fund the upgrades, salvage unwanted weapons, shields, armour and rings, then spend recovered ordinary Runes on the equipment you’ll keep. Don’t salvage a candidate weapon just because it has a lower rarity before comparing its initial level, existing perks and potential maximum. When considering Legendary Runes, treat the investment as permanent, especially if you’re still searching for a level-50 drop.
Legendary versus Epic upgrades
A useful test before upgrading is to compare two copies of the same weapon family. A level-47 Legendary can end at 52; a level-50 Epic can end at 54. The Legendary has one more enhancement slot, but the Epic may offer a higher finishing item level. Compare its actual damage and unlocked effects for your build instead of automatically treating the colour as a tier ranking.
Which items to upgrade first
For an endgame build, prioritize one main damage source, then the armour or accessory piece with an upgrade that supports your combat style. Melee players may benefit from block, critical-hit or Strength-linked perks; ranged players should inspect their bow and dagger bonuses; mages need to consider wand/staff enhancements and the 1.0 spell changes. Our Eternal spell upgrades and Eternal arrows guides cover those extra systems.
Finding higher-level equipment
You also need access to high-level gear in the first place. Continue into the northern Cinder’s Cradle region and other late-game areas to find appropriate drops and materials. The Cinder’s Cradle access guide and level cap explainer cover the progression, while 1.0 patch notes explain the broader equipment changes.
Enshrouded Gear Level 55 troubleshooting
If the item isn’t in Item Upgrades, check that it’s actually in your inventory or action bar, that its tooltip lists an upgrade NPC, and that you haven’t already unlocked every step. If the Unlock button is grey, read the Rune cost and earlier locked steps. If you’re trying to reach 55 from a level-40 item, the issue isn’t a missing recipe: that weapon simply doesn’t have enough level increments.
Enshrouded Gear Level 55 after player 50
The Enshrouded Gear Level 55 ceiling applies to equipment after upgrading, not to additional player progression. If you’ve just reached player level 50, your next goals are stronger gear drops, the right perk combinations and upgrading the best items you already own. The Flame Level 11 guide explains the separate world progression, and skill tree reset guide helps rebuild a character after the 1.0 reset.
