OSRS Hardcore Worlds Reset or Transfer: What Happens to Items

Official OSRS Hardcore Worlds Hardcore Worlds Death Choice Official Jagex

OSRS Hardcore Worlds Reset or Transfer is the decision you face after dying in the permanent Hardcore mode launching November 4, 2026. Reset wipes everything and starts the same character over as a new Hardcore adventurer. Transfer keeps your surviving progress and bank, but moves the character into the ordinary game forever. You cannot transfer it back into Hardcore Worlds.

Jagex applies normal item-loss rules before Death gives you this choice. That means even a Transfer cannot save gear destroyed on death, while Reset also deletes any items that had initially been protected. Here are the consequences for quests, skills, equipment and your next attempt.

How death is processed before the decision

First the game determines what you normally keep. In most non-PvP situations that is three items, or four with Protect Item active. Wilderness deaths use their own PvP rules. Gear that would have gone into a gravestone disappears permanently under Hardcore Worlds rules, regardless of what you choose next.

You then arrive at Death’s Office. The OSRS Hardcore Worlds Reset or Transfer choice determines whether you preserve your surviving progress in the regular game or restart in Hardcore. Neither choice returns items already lost on death.

The biggest trap with OSRS Hardcore Worlds Reset or Transfer is assuming three protected items survive a Reset. They don’t: the reset wipes those items along with the bank, quests and levels.

OSRS Hardcore Worlds Reset or Transfer: What Reset removes

Reset strips away skill levels, quest completion, equipment, your bank and other belongings. Jagex says the character returns to a state equivalent to having just finished Tutorial Island. Even items the death screen initially protected do not carry into the new attempt. You can Reset again and again without a limit, but each fresh run starts over.

Reset suits players who want another Hardcore run, including those chasing the first-achievement broadcasts. But if you want to keep weeks of questing or training, Transfer is the alternative. The OSRS Hardcore Worlds Reset or Transfer choice cannot be used to protect a bank from the reset.

OSRS Hardcore Worlds Reset or Transfer: What Transfer preserves

Transfer takes the same save profile into the main game. You keep the character’s levels, completed quests, bank contents, other stored belongings and any carried items protected in the first death-processing step. The items already lost on death are permanently gone, so transferring doesn’t recreate a gravestone or restore all your equipped gear.

Transfer is one-way. The character keeps its surviving progress in the main game but cannot return to Hardcore Worlds. You’d need a new character for another Hardcore attempt.

Can you change your mind after transferring?

No. Once a character transfers to the main game, Jagex says it has no route back to Hardcore Worlds. The October 22 blog also describes Reset and Transfer as choices presented on death, not as a reversible menu available to a healthy character whenever you like.

A new Hardcore attempt after transferring requires a fresh character. Player Support will not restore an individual character’s lost Hardcore status. Read both OSRS Hardcore Worlds Reset or Transfer options at Death’s Office before confirming: transferring is permanent.

What about Wilderness PvP deaths?

The same Reset-versus-Transfer outcome follows the death, but PvP item protection depends on the Wilderness rules rather than automatically keeping three items. Opponents receive normal Wilderness drops, and you cannot use Transfer to recover equipment already lost to them.

For planning valuable loadouts, our Fractured Archive inventory guide covers ordinary raid supplies, while boss routes explain different encounter risks. Those guides don’t override Hardcore item-loss rules.

OSRS Hardcore Worlds Reset or Transfer: Which should you choose?

Choose Reset if another one-life attempt matters more to you than keeping levels or money. Choose Transfer if you want to continue playing the developed character in the main game with its surviving inventory and bank. Neither path is a rollback of the death.

The Jagex Account migration changes how you sign in; it doesn’t let an existing main-game character enter Hardcore Worlds. For future challenges, our Fractured Archive overview covers a raid Jagex plans to recognise through world-first broadcasts.
