OSRS Xarth vs Dagon’hai Elder: Pillars, Corpses and Ritual Guide

OSRS Xarth and the Dagon’hai Elder are the two alternatives for the Fractured Archive’s fourth boss encounter. Xarth is a two-part fight that asks you to hide behind pillars and stop undead corpses from healing him. The Dagon’hai trio tests elemental spell interruptions, shared shields and positioning around a ritual cauldron.

You fight just one of these encounters before facing Ocellus. Both offer the same maximum contribution points, so the choice comes down to your party’s spells and ability to coordinate. A group with water or ice spells might prefer Xarth, while a team happy to respond to several elemental cues might prefer the Elder and his monks.

When to choose OSRS Xarth or Dagon’hai

After the third boss you return to the atrium and can buy supplies from the Quartermaster. Then you choose between Xarth or the Dagon’hai Elder and monks. The last fight is Ocellus regardless of your selection. Restock before opening either room: food, combat potions and Prayer restoration are important for the remaining route, and you cannot bank inside the raid.

For OSRS Xarth, a Ranged option and water or ice spells are helpful. Against the trio, the key tool is access to Fire, Water, Air and Earth spells to interrupt the correct channel. Decide who is responsible for those calls before entering the room.

OSRS Xarth phase one: pillars and fire blasts

Xarth begins by attacking with Magic and applying a burn. As his health falls, he binds the team and launches searing projectiles while charging a powerful explosion. Hide behind a pillar before that blast goes off. Getting hit can cost substantial health and leave a burn, so the mechanic is more important than squeezing out one extra attack.

Have everyone use the same pillar during OSRS Xarth rather than splitting around the room. Misaligned players can cause the blast to destroy multiple pillars and remove cover that you need later. Watch where the boss is facing and move together. Ranged or Magic allows damage while maintaining space from the boss.

OSRS Xarth phase two: how to stop the corpses

In the second section, Xarth uses melee or Ranged attacks and throws flame hazards onto the ground. Corpses start advancing from the arena’s edge. Every corpse that reaches Xarth heals him, so the team needs to stop them before they arrive. Use ice spells to freeze them or water spells to douse them and make them easier to kill.

Fire spells can make OSRS Xarth summon additional corpses, which is the opposite of what you want. Assign one or two players to control the approaching enemies while the others deal boss damage. If enough corpses reach him to restore around 200 health, he answers with a heavy arena-wide blast and burn effect. Preventing that heal is much easier than trying to outheal the punishment.

In the OSRS Xarth fight, corpses spawn more frequently as he approaches defeat. A party that entered with suitable runes and clear targeting will have an easier time here than one depending on a single weapon for every problem.

Dagon’hai Elder: shield and ritual mechanics

The Elder and two monks share shield mechanics and build up a ritual indicated by a yellow progress bar beneath the cauldron. If that ritual completes, they empower themselves and unleash stronger attacks. The team should damage the shield while interrupting the channel. The Elder also throws dangerous surge spells that can still hurt through protection prayers, so avoid standing together where several players can be caught.

When the monks empower their tomes, look for air gust markers showing where a player can stand to interrupt the transfer. Assign somebody to watch those markers while another teammate calls the required elemental spell. The encounter is much easier when each player knows which part of the ritual they are stopping.

Every Dagon’hai elemental call and counter

A channel begins with a spoken cue. Cast the matching elemental spell on the Elder or monk performing it:

Spoken cueCounter
I’ll feed the flames!Fire spell
I’ll guide the flow!Water spell
I’ll focus the winds!Air spell
I’ll strengthen the bond!Earth spell

The right spell interrupts channel progress. The wrong element wastes time and allows the ritual to continue. It is worth agreeing who handles each element before entering, rather than swapping spellbooks or runes in the middle of an empowered attack.

OSRS Xarth vs Dagon’hai: which is best?

Choose Xarth when your party understands pillar cover and has the spells to stop corpses. Choose the trio when your party is comfortable handling ritual cues and standing on tome-transfer tiles. Jagex’s October 21 Defence update also matters: Xarth now stops at 60% of starting Defence, but the Dagon’hai trio can still be reduced to zero. Early kill-time comparisons using zero-Defence Xarth are outdated.

The final OSRS Xarth decision should be about reaching Ocellus with supplies to spare, not chasing an unverified superior loot table. Read our Fractured Archive entrance and boss route, raid rewards and launch issue guide for the wider raid.
