Minecraft Brittle Ice: Where to Find It, Make It and Cross Safely

Minecraft Brittle Ice

Minecraft Brittle Ice appears in the new Ice Caves of the current Java 26.4 snapshots and Bedrock 26.70 previews. It forms fragile bridges over crevasses, cracks under many entities and can be collected with Silk Touch. You can also create it with water flowing horizontally beside Blue Ice.

Brittle Ice might look like a solid bridge, but it cracks under players and many mobs. Frostbites are an exception, and Java Snapshot 6 also lets Strays stand on it without starting the cracking sequence. That makes a crevasse risky even when hostile mobs cross safely.

Where to find Minecraft Brittle Ice

Look for an Ice Cave beneath a colder Overworld biome in the testing builds. The cave is recognisable by Packed Ice, Calcite, Ice Crystals and Icicles. Brittle Ice generates over the winding crevasses in the ice, sometimes above deep openings that contain water farther below.

Don’t mistake Minecraft Brittle Ice for ordinary Ice or Packed Ice. It may look like solid terrain at first, but stopping on a fragile section can begin the cracking sequence. A pool of water isn’t guaranteed beneath every crevasse, so check the surrounding terrain before crossing.

How to mine Brittle Ice with Silk Touch

  1. Start Java Snapshot 26.4 Snapshot 4 or Bedrock Preview 26.70.20.
  2. Explore an Ice Cave until you find a Brittle Ice bridge over a crevasse.
  3. Equip a tool enchanted with Silk Touch.
  4. Approach from stable Packed Ice or Calcite, not the fragile bridge itself.
  5. Mine the Brittle Ice block with the enchanted tool and collect it.

Silk Touch is the confirmed way to collect Minecraft Brittle Ice as an item. If you’re gathering several blocks, mine along the edge of the crevasse rather than standing on the block you’re trying to remove. Falling during collection is a bigger concern than finding enough natural ice.

How to make Minecraft Brittle Ice from Blue Ice

  1. Place a Blue Ice block where you want to create the fragile ice.
  2. Place water so it flows horizontally against the side of the Blue Ice.
  3. Allow the horizontally adjacent flowing water to turn into Brittle Ice.
  4. Collect the new block using Silk Touch if you need to move it to another structure.

Minecraft Brittle Ice has no confirmed crafting-grid recipe. The new production mechanic converts water into Brittle Ice when it flows sideways beside Blue Ice. You cannot get the same result by putting a Water Bucket and Blue Ice into a crafting table.

Minecraft Brittle Ice cracking stages and fall damage

StageResult
Normal surfaceLooks solid until an affected entity puts weight on it
First crackVisible cracking begins
Second crackCracks progress as the entity remains on it
Third crackThe block breaks and anything above may fall into the crevasse

Minecraft Brittle Ice shows three crack stages before it breaks. Don’t stop on the surface to fight: cross quickly or place solid blocks over the gap. A water bucket can help after a fall, but it doesn’t stop the ice from breaking.

Frostbites and Strays can stand on the block without cracking it in Java Snapshot 6. Other entities may still trigger the collapse, so judge the surface itself rather than copying a mob’s route across it.

Does Minecraft Brittle Ice melt?

No. Minecraft Brittle Ice doesn’t melt. Its collapse mechanic comes from entities standing on it, not from heat or the surrounding biome’s temperature. That makes it different from ordinary Ice and useful for deliberately fragile structures.

Even if a build is brightly lit or outside a frozen biome, don’t treat the block as permanent load-bearing flooring. A player or most mobs can still trigger its cracking behaviour.

Can you use Brittle Ice as a mob trap?

The cracking surface can be used to create hazards for entities that aren’t immune to it. However, Frostbites won’t break the block simply by walking over it, so you can’t rely on Minecraft Brittle Ice to drop them into a pit. Consider how players will cross the structure too.

If you’re experimenting with a Minecraft Brittle Ice trap in Survival, test it in a safe area before installing it over a dangerous drop. The snapshot mechanics may be adjusted during development, and the timing of cracks is a particularly important part of a reliable build.

Is Brittle Ice available in normal Minecraft?

Minecraft Brittle Ice remains a Java snapshot and Bedrock Preview/Beta feature as of October 31, rather than part of the stable Minecraft release. Use a separate test world or a backup before experimenting with fragile flooring over a deep drop.

For Minecraft Brittle Ice, the quickest method is either harvesting the natural crevasse blocks with Silk Touch or converting horizontal flowing water beside Blue Ice. Both can be tested now, without waiting for the final game drop.

Minecraft Brittle Ice changes in Java Snapshot 6

The key Minecraft Brittle Ice fix in Snapshot 6 is the Stray exemption. This changes how the block behaves in a trap: a floor that breaks under a player won’t drop a Stray simply because it stands on the same block.

Mojang also fixed several specific interactions involving Shulkers, lily pads and village-summoned Iron Golems, plus cracking behaviour when mob_griefing is disabled or spawn protection is active. Those are separate fixes, not a general rule making the ice safe.
