Minecraft Frostbite: Where to Find It, Drops and Freezing Attacks

Minecraft Frostbite is a frozen zombie that throws Ice Balls, hits enemies with the Freezing effect at close range and drops Ice Balls and Rotten Flesh. Mojang is testing it as part of Minecraft’s fourth 2026 game drop, and the October Bedrock updates changed both its spawning rules and Powder Snow conversions.

Bedrock Preview 26.70.21 restricts natural underground Frostbite spawns to Ice Caves. In 26.70.22, Husks and Drowned now turn into ordinary Zombies before becoming Frostbites in Powder Snow. These are development changes, separate from the experimental version of the mob included in Bedrock 26.60.

Where Minecraft Frostbite spawns

To find a natural underground Frostbite, explore the Ice Caves beneath cold Overworld biomes. Look for Packed Ice, Calcite and hanging Icicles. Mojang’s 26.70.21 notes stop Frostbites from spawning naturally underground outside this biome, so an ordinary cave beneath snow isn’t enough.

You can also find Frostbites in eligible cold surface biomes or produce them through Powder Snow conversion. That’s useful if you’re building a test-world farm. The Ice Caves restriction applies to natural underground spawning, not every possible way the mob can appear.

Minecraft Frostbite attacks and Freezing

AttackEffect
Thrown Ice BallsRanged projectiles that can hit you from a distance
Melee hitApplies the Freezing effect as well as normal combat damage
Freezing immunityFrostbite doesn’t take damage from Freezing itself
Brittle Ice movementWalks across Brittle Ice without breaking the block

Frostbites throw Ice Balls when attacking from a distance. These projectiles cause damage and knockback. At close range, the mob switches to melee and can apply Freezing. An Ice Ball on its own doesn’t apply the Freezing effect; it’s the melee attack that does.

What does Minecraft Frostbite drop?

A defeated Frostbite can drop Rotten Flesh and Ice Balls. Mojang doesn’t provide exact drop chances in the October changelogs, so bring enough equipment to fight more than one. Ice Balls are also used for making Potions of Freezing.

Watch for Brittle Ice as you collect loot. Frostbites can walk across it safely, but players can cause it to crack and fall into a crevasse. Fight on ordinary blocks rather than chasing the mob over a fragile ice bridge.

How to turn Zombies, Husks and Drowned into Minecraft Frostbite

In Bedrock Preview 26.70.22, both Husks and Drowned become normal Zombies first when they remain in Powder Snow. The Zombie can then complete its conversion into a Frostbite. Ordinary Zombies can also turn into Frostbites through Powder Snow.

The update also stops Zombies, Husks and Drowned taking freezing damage while in Powder Snow. You can observe the conversion in a controlled test-world enclosure without mistaking the damage fix for a change to the Frostbite’s normal combat attacks.

Does Minecraft Frostbite take Freezing damage?

No. Frostbites are immune to Freezing and can stand on Brittle Ice without breaking it. A mob crossing the frozen floor safely doesn’t mean you’ll be able to follow: players can crack the ice and fall through.

Keep your distance from crevasses, make a path with solid blocks where necessary and avoid depending on fragile ice as a trap. The mob’s cold resistance and its ability to cross Brittle Ice both work in its favour.

How to fight Minecraft Frostbite safely

Bring leather armour, a shield and spare blocks. Leather protects against freezing damage even though the status may still appear. Stay behind cover when the Frostbite throws Ice Balls, and avoid moving into melee range unless you’ve got room to retreat. Our Freezing Effect guide covers the status in more detail.

The 26.70.22 Preview also makes snowy variants of Villagers and Zombie Villagers spawn in Ice Caves. That’s a biome-spawning change, not an additional Frostbite attack or a new drop from the frozen zombie.

Can you find Minecraft Frostbite in stable Bedrock?

Yes, as an experimental feature. Mojang’s stable Bedrock 26.60 update, released on 27 October, includes Frostbite in the Experimental Game Drops Features section. It is not yet part of ordinary default Survival, and the newer 26.70.21 and 26.70.22 changes are specifically Preview/Beta adjustments. Java players can also try Frostbite in the current 26.4 snapshots.

Java snapshots also include the What Goes Around Comes Around advancement for finishing off a Frostbite with an Ice Ball thrown by a player. For its projectile damage and brewing uses, see our Ice Balls guide. Back up your world before enabling experiments or loading it in a development build.
