Reaching the Far Shore is one of Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen’s most worthwhile Norgan side quests. Jiera needs you to recover a book from the far side of Lake Norgan, but the obvious route ends at water filled with the Brine. Getting there means tracking down an ice dragon and changing the lake itself.
The reward for Reaching the Far Shore isn’t just experience and gold. This is the quest that unlocks Hal’s Tailor Equipment service, letting you restyle eligible Norgan relic gear. The steps below follow the NPC conversations, each Fimbl encounter and the frozen-lake crossing, including what to do when the lake stubbornly refuses to freeze.
How to start Reaching the Far Shore
Reach Norgan through the Dark Arisen story and work past Rumbles in the North. The quest becomes available from Jiera at Norgandian Settlement once the connected story and village-rebuilding progress have advanced. If Jiera still has no quest, check Village Defense, Soul Searching and the events around The Castle in the Ice.
In Reaching the Far Shore, Jiera asks you to retrieve an ancestral tome hidden in a cave beyond Lake Norgan. Swimming is not the answer: the lake’s Brine makes the direct crossing impossible. Track Reaching the Far Shore in the quest journal so that the conversations leading to the alternate route are marked.
Ask Polyeidus and Ser Ryatt about crossing Lake Norgan
Travel to the Sealed Study ruins and speak with Polyeidus. He directs you to Ser Ryatt, who is nearby. Ryatt explains that the ice wyrm Fimbl once caused Lake Norgan to freeze. Return to Jiera and discuss this lead. The investigation points you towards the dragon north of the Mountain Stronghold.
If the objective doesn’t move on, check both conversations: talking only to Polyeidus doesn’t supply the crucial information from Ryatt. Once you’ve reported back, prepare for multiple fights rather than a single boss arena.
Find Fimbl and chase it to the lake

- First encounter: head north of the Mountain Stronghold and attack Fimbl where it rests. Reduce its health enough to force it to fly away.
- Second encounter: pursue Fimbl into the Mountain Stronghold courtyard. Keep attacking until it retreats again towards Lake Norgan. A Hook Rope can help with the stronghold’s vertical routes.
- Third encounter: travel to the lake’s northern shore, near the ruined ballista positions south of Beorcan Stronghold. Fimbl remains over the water and must be brought down from range.
- Move between ballistae as the dragon targets and damages them. Use ruins for cover against ice shards, and aim whenever the wyrm stays still long enough for a clean hit.
The first two retreats in Reaching the Far Shore are scripted. If the dragon disappears after losing health, you haven’t failed Reaching the Far Shore; follow the next location in the chain. Save your best curatives for the lake battle, where staying at a fixed ballista for too long is dangerous.
How to freeze Lake Norgan and find the Taillour-Crafte Treatise
As Reaching the Far Shore enters its final stretch, after Fimbl dies, return to Jiera and rest at the Norgandian Settlement inn for a day. Watch for the quest update about ice forming around the dragon’s body. If you head straight to the lake after the fight, the water may still block the crossing. Rest again if the notification hasn’t appeared.
Go back to Lake Norgan. The dragon’s remains are surrounded by a section of frozen water; use it as a path to the opposite shore. You can loot the remains for a Wintry Dragon Scale and other spoils, and search nearby ruins for additional treasure, but the quest item is inside Lakeside Grotto. Enter the cave and open the marked chest to retrieve the Taillour-Crafte Treatise.

Who gets the treatise, and what rewards do you receive?
To finish Reaching the Far Shore, take the tome to Jiera first. She recognises the book as a smithing text and tells you to pass it to her husband Hal, the Norgandian Settlement blacksmith. Speak with Hal and hand it over. Once he’s read it, a new Tailor Equipment service appears in his shop menu.
Completing Reaching the Far Shore awards 10,000 gold, 50,000 XP and 1,000 Rift Crystals, alongside the permanent tailoring unlock. You can now change the appearance of eligible appraised Norgan relic items while keeping their original stats.
Reaching the Far Shore problems and fixes
- Jiera doesn’t offer the quest: advance the Norgan main story and settle outstanding village quests.
- Fimbl fled before dying: follow its next scripted location; there are three stages.
- Can’t attack the dragon over the lake: use the shoreline ballistae rather than forcing melee combat.
- Lake still liquid: return to Jiera and rest at an inn until the freezing update appears.
- Quest hasn’t completed after finding the book: bring it first to Jiera, then to Hal.
The big turning point in Reaching the Far Shore is realising that killing Fimbl doesn’t instantly give you a bridge. The inn rest is part of the solution, and the journey isn’t finished until Hal has the treatise.
