Dragon’s Dogma 2 Update 4.0 adds Hard Mode, a way to restart the story with saved progress, and an Orienteer specialization for Pawns. Released around October 8–9, 2026, alongside Dark Arisen, the patch also makes forgotten riftstones more rewarding, corrects quest blockers and introduces new graphics options on PS5 Pro and Steam. Those base-game changes don’t require buying the expansion.
The update and Dark Arisen are separate downloads on some platforms, which makes it easy to confuse what’s free with what’s paid. If you’re returning to the game, the things worth checking first are Hard Mode, the carry-over restart, new Pawn behaviour and the quest fixes. Here’s exactly what Capcom changed and which features apply to each platform.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Update 4.0 release date and platforms
The patch arrived around the October 8–9 launch of Dark Arisen. PS5 players may see version 04.000.000. Capcom’s notes cover PS5 Pro, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam, with several improvements applying to all four versions. Update the base game before looking for the new options.
You don’t need Dark Arisen for Hard Mode or the bug fixes. The patch includes support for the DLC, but entering the snowy Norgan region and playing the twelve Lost Rites dungeons still requires the paid expansion.

Hard Mode in Dragon’s Dogma 2 Update 4.0
Hard Mode offers a tougher challenge for players who want to return to Vermund and Battahl with a more demanding combat experience. It’s listed in the common patch notes, so base-game owners can use it without buying Dark Arisen.
Capcom hasn’t provided universal numerical damage or health multipliers in its short update notice. The mode’s exact settings should be checked inside your updated game instead of assuming the same balance as the original Dragon’s Dogma’s older Hard Mode.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Update 4.0 carry-over restart
There’s now a feature that lets you start the story again with current save data carried over. It is an optional way to replay quests without starting entirely from scratch. Capcom doesn’t say the update erases your current character automatically, nor does it give a complete list of everything retained in the published notes.
If you still need to finish quests in an existing run, read the restart confirmation screen carefully before using it. Check what the game says will carry across, and use your platform’s supported save backup feature if available.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Update 4.0 Orienteer Pawn specialization
The new Orienteer specialization is part of the free update. Capcom names it without detailing its exact ability or acquisition method in the patch notes. Until that method is verified in-game, there is no reason to send players looking for an invented NPC or scroll.
Pawn fixes make a more immediate difference: companions should stop fighting barehanded while equipped, refusing to use ladders or assigning unexpectedly low priority to elemental-enchantment skills. Capcom also fixed incorrect High Five dialogue and support-Pawn gifts sometimes remaining in your inventory after dismissal.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Update 4.0 Rift Crystals and armour adjustments
Forgotten riftstones now award 90 Rift Crystals instead of 30. For stones you’ve already activated, Capcom says you’ll receive the difference when you start the game again after updating. That extra payout doesn’t require finding the same stones a second time.
Some armour also gains thermal properties. The official patch notes don’t identify every affected item or give a complete table of cold-resistance values, so check the description of the gear you actually own.

Quest fixes in Dragon’s Dogma 2 Update 4.0
The Phantom Oxcart had an issue where Pawns could push the Arisen out while waiting at the front of the cart. Ware the Corrupted Beasts could become impossible to complete when progressed between 3 a.m. and dawn in game time. Both are specifically addressed in this patch.
Capcom also fixed some incorrectly displayed parts of Sovran’s Greaves and a case where using an Unmaking Arrow changed the detection of the latest save. These corrections accompany the broader Pawn improvements.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Update 4.0 button-mapping fixes
Custom controls received several repairs. Reassigning Weapon Skills 5 and 6 could remove item names from the main-menu control guide. Other mapping bugs allowed certain Vocation Actions and Switch Weapon Skill buttons to conflict with two-button Weapon Skill assignments.
Those specific issues should be corrected after updating. If you’re using custom bindings, open the menu and confirm the labels and controls still match the layout you want.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Update 4.0 PS5 Pro and Steam graphics
PS5 Pro gains official Enhanced PSSR support, improving the console’s upscaling options. This addition is listed only under the PS5 Pro section, not as a feature for every PS5.
On Steam, the patch adds FSR 3 Frame Generation, upgrades DLSS Super Resolution to 4.5, and enables DLSS Multi Frame Generation. Frame Generation can now run without DLSS Super Resolution enabled. DualSense adaptive triggers, vibration and motion controls are also supported on compatible PC configurations.
Is Dark Arisen free with Dragon’s Dogma 2 Update 4.0?
No. Hard Mode, the restart and base-game fixes are free. For the paid expansion, our Dark Arisen start guide covers speaking with Brant in Vernworth and the suggested starting levels for Forsaken Dominion and Lost Rites.
If you’ve already bought the DLC, let the base patch and expansion content install before launching. The download-size guide explains why the downloads can have different footprints, and our launch-time guide covers the regional unlocks.
For base-game owners, Dragon’s Dogma 2 Update 4.0 provides a tougher challenge, more Rift Crystals and fewer frustrating interruptions from Pawn and quest bugs. The paid expansion adds new places and challenges when you’re ready for them.
