The Pokémon Winds and Waves trailer gave players their first look at the new main-series Pokémon games on February 27, 2026. Shown during Pokémon Presents, the announcement introduced a region of windswept islands and ocean, three brand-new starter Pokémon and two specially dressed Pikachu.
There’s plenty to spot in that first reveal, but it also leaves big questions about battles, multiplayer and how travelling between the islands will work. Here’s a breakdown of what Pokémon actually showed and confirmed, so you can revisit the trailer without mixing in fan theories or unofficial claims.
Where can you watch the Pokémon Winds and Waves trailer?

The Pokémon Winds and Waves trailer debuted in the Pokémon Day 2026 Pokémon Presents broadcast on February 27. You can watch the original announcement video through the official Pokémon Presents recap, which includes the reveal and the key announcements from that presentation.
The same announcement confirmed a simultaneous worldwide release in 2027, exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2. There is no exact launch date yet, and the first video isn’t a release-date trailer. Our release-date guide covers the timing separately.
The new region: windswept islands and a vast ocean
One of the biggest reveals is the setting itself. The Pokémon Winds and Waves trailer introduces an open world of islands surrounded by a vast ocean, with waves that ebb and flow and different environments for Pokémon to inhabit.
Pokémon describes these habitats as unique ecosystems, shaped by the creatures living in harmony with their surroundings. The footage establishes a strong island-and-sea identity, but it doesn’t provide a complete map, an official region name or the number of explorable islands.
The announcement also says trainers will work with different Pokémon to overcome difficult terrain and forces of nature. It doesn’t explain exactly which Pokémon perform those tasks or whether travel involves boats, swimming, diving or ride abilities. Our open-world guide covers those unanswered mechanics in more detail.
Browt, Pombon and Gecqua make their debut

The Pokémon Winds and Waves trailer introduces three new first partner Pokémon. Browt is the Grass-type Bean Chick Pokémon, an energetic and slightly clumsy creature that uses leaves on its brow to photosynthesise. It has the Ability Overgrow.
Pombon is the Fire-type Puppy Pokémon. It’s friendly and guileless, with a faint glow under its throat caused by a heat-producing organ in its lungs. Its confirmed Ability is Blaze.
Gecqua is the Water-type Water Gecko Pokémon, described as intelligent and a little showy. It fires springy balls of water from its tail and has the Ability Torrent. All three have official height and weight information, but Pokémon hasn’t announced their evolution lines, complete stats or movesets.
You can compare all three with official measurements and descriptions in our starter Pokémon guide. No evolved forms are revealed in the announcement.
Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu appear in the reveal
The Pokémon Winds and Waves trailer also introduces two distinctive-looking Pikachu. The Pokémon Company identifies them as Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu, with separate names and appearances shown on the official game website.
The names line up neatly with the two game titles, but Pokémon hasn’t confirmed that Mr. Windychu is exclusive to Winds or that Ms. Wavychu only appears in Waves. Their roles in the adventure are also unexplained, including whether players can catch them.

The pair are introduced as special Pikachu, not as two brand-new species. Read our Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu guide for the confirmed names, appearances and current questions.
What does the trailer reveal about version differences?
There is one clear, officially confirmed difference between Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves: the main character wears a different outfit depending on the version. The announcement gives players a first look at both designs.
No version-exclusive Pokémon, Legendary mascots or separate stories are detailed in the Pokémon Winds and Waves trailer. That doesn’t mean the two games won’t have those features; it simply means the reveal doesn’t establish them.
Our Winds vs Waves comparison covers the differences that are known today, rather than trying to predict them from the two titles.
Does the first trailer show battles, co-op or online trading?
The Pokémon Winds and Waves trailer focuses on environments, Pokémon species and the new adventure. It doesn’t provide a full explanation of the battle system, online trading, co-op exploration or competitive multiplayer.
The games are presented as a new Pokémon RPG adventure, but previous games shouldn’t be used as proof that any particular multiplayer feature will return. The official material gives no confirmed Union Circle replacement or new online battle mode.
Nintendo’s game information indicates single-player support, while the online features remain unannounced. Our co-op guide and battle-system guide separate confirmed facts from what players are still hoping to see.
What remains unknown after the Pokémon Winds and Waves trailer?
The biggest missing details are the exact 2027 release day, the region name, the complete Pokédex, the starter evolutions, any Legendary Pokémon, version exclusives and how movement and battles will work. An official price and pre-order date haven’t been announced either.
For anyone revisiting the Pokémon Winds and Waves trailer, the confirmed takeaways are a new open-world island setting, Browt, Pombon and Gecqua, two named special Pikachu, version-specific main character outfits and a 2027 Nintendo Switch 2 launch.
For the source material, the official Pokémon Winds and Waves website has the announcement and Pokémon profiles. We’ve also organised the creatures spotted so far in our Pokédex guide.
