Permafrost playtest access is drawing attention because the test is short, admission has been handled in waves and the clock rules are unusually strict. This is not the sort of test where you can casually leave the game open while deciding on a character or exploring the settings menu. The developers have been adjusting access during the event, which also means older announcements can now show a different total allowance from the one players actually have today.
The most important preparation happens before launching the client for the first time. Permafrost playtest time includes the setup moments that many players normally treat as free, and access also comes with a way to bring friends into the test. SpaceRocket Games has already responded to feedback by changing the total play allowance during the event, so current information matters more than the original September announcement.

The Permafrost playtest is live on Steam and the current total play allowance is 2 hours. SpaceRocket Games originally announced a 1 hour limit, then posted on October 3 that it was extending everyone to 2 hours because players wanted more time. If you had already used the original hour, the developer said you would receive another hour rather than losing access immediately.
That update is important because older Permafrost playtest posts and search snippets can still mention the original one-hour rule. The newer developer announcement is the current state. Treat 2 hours as the total allowance for this test unless SpaceRocket Games publishes another change before the event closes.
How to get Permafrost playtest access
To request Permafrost playtest access, use the playtest signup on the game's Steam store page. The developer has been admitting players in waves rather than opening the build to every request at the same second. A second wave of access was sent on October 3, so players who requested access but missed the first batch were told to check their Steam libraries again.
A request does not mean you should repeatedly launch the normal store page looking for a hidden code. Permafrost playtest access appears through Steam when your account is admitted. Check the library and the Steam client notification state, and keep the client updated so the playtest entry can appear normally when access has been granted.
When the timer starts
The Permafrost playtest timer starts the moment you launch the game. SpaceRocket Games explicitly says the allowance covers everything you do after launch, including character creation. That means time spent adjusting a face, reading every option or sitting at the menu is part of the same limited total as active survival gameplay.
This is the easiest Permafrost playtest rule to underestimate. If you want to protect as much playable time as possible, decide on basic character choices before opening the client and avoid launching merely to check whether it works unless you are ready to start. The timer rule comes directly from the developer and applies to the current test.
Permafrost playtest end time in the UK and Europe
The Permafrost playtest ends on October 6 at 14:00 CEST. In the UK, that is 13:00 BST on October 6 because Central European Summer Time is one hour ahead of British Summer Time. The event closes at that scheduled point even if you still have unused personal play time remaining.
Do not confuse the Permafrost playtest end time with the Early Access launch. Early Access follows on October 9, while this temporary test ends earlier. If you are waiting until the final day to use your allowance, leave enough room before the closure so the global end time does not cut into the two hours available on your account.
How the three friend invites work
Each player with Permafrost playtest access receives three friend invites according to the developer's announcement. That is designed to let a small group experience the test together rather than forcing every friend to wait for a separate access wave. SpaceRocket Games repeatedly highlights the three invitations in its current playtest posts.
Coordinate the invites before spending your own Permafrost playtest time. The two-hour clock is attached to launching the game, so organizing the group in Steam or chat first is the safer approach. The developer does not describe the invites as extra personal play time, so treat them as access for friends rather than extensions to your own timer.
What changed from the original one-hour announcement
The original Permafrost playtest announcement said every player would have 1 hour. After the test went live and feedback came in, SpaceRocket Games announced that the total would be extended to 2 hours for everyone. Players who had already spent their first hour were specifically told they could use another hour.
That makes the current Permafrost playtest a good example of why the latest announcement should win over the launch post. The strict rule that the timer begins on game launch remains, while the total allowance has changed. If you see a page still advertising one hour, it is using the pre-extension information.
How to avoid wasting your limited test time
Before starting the Permafrost playtest, update Steam, close unnecessary background applications and decide whether you are playing solo or with friends. Those are practical preparation steps rather than special developer requirements, but they reduce the chance that your limited allowance is eaten by avoidable setup. The most important official rule is still that character creation counts once the game launches.
Use the Permafrost playtest for the things you actually want to evaluate before Early Access, whether that is survival systems, building, exploration or co-op. Two hours is still short for an open-world survival game, so a simple plan is more useful than trying to sample everything. The test closes on October 6, making unused time valuable only until the event itself ends.
