Final Fantasy Resonance Switch Upgrade: Can You Upgrade to Switch 2?

Final Fantasy Resonance official key art

A Final Fantasy Resonance Switch upgrade sounds like the obvious route for players who buy the RPG on the original console and later move to Switch 2, but Nintendo treats the two releases as separate products. That creates a distinction between upgrading the game version and buying the Digital Deluxe Upgrade, which is only an add-on pack for the version you already own. The names are close enough that it is worth checking the store wording carefully before spending money.

The decision also affects your save file. Nintendo does not just separate the software listings, it explicitly addresses transfer between them. A Final Fantasy Resonance Switch upgrade would be much less useful if progress could not follow, so the save rule is just as important as the purchase rule. Players planning to change hardware should understand both restrictions before starting a long RPG playthrough.

Is there a Final Fantasy Resonance Switch upgrade to Switch 2?

No. Nintendo states that there are no plans to sell a Final Fantasy Resonance Switch upgrade pack that converts the Nintendo Switch version into the dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 version. The two releases are separate products.

If you buy the original Switch game and later want the dedicated Switch 2 release, the official store information currently points to buying the Switch 2 version separately. Nintendo does not describe a paid or free generational upgrade path.

Can your save transfer to the Switch 2 version?

No. Nintendo says save data from the Nintendo Switch version cannot be carried over to the Nintendo Switch 2 version. It also states that Switch 2 save data cannot be carried back to the Switch version.

This makes the missing Final Fantasy Resonance Switch upgrade especially important for anyone who expects to change versions after launch. A second purchase would not simply continue the existing playthrough under the current official rules. You would be dealing with a separate software version and a separate save.

If you own Switch 2 but are considering the original Switch edition for compatibility reasons, think about where you actually want to finish the game. Starting on the original version because it runs on both systems may be useful in a multi-console household, but it will not create a transfer path into the dedicated Switch 2 build later.

What is the Digital Deluxe Upgrade then?

The Digital Deluxe Upgrade is not a Final Fantasy Resonance Switch upgrade between console generations. It adds the Magitek & Grimoire Deluxe Pack to the matching base game. That pack contains the Magitek Armor Key, Archwitch’s Grimoire, Mastery Ring and a set of recovery and utility items.

Nintendo has separate Digital Deluxe Upgrade products for Switch and Switch 2. The Switch 2 listing specifically warns that it is additional content for the Switch 2 version and is not compatible with the separate Switch game. The same principle applies in reverse: use the DLC tied to the software version you own.

This naming is the easiest place to make a mistake. If your goal is better hardware support, the word Upgrade on the Deluxe DLC does not help. If your goal is the magitek chocobo cosmetic and Fel Meteor unlock item, then the Digital Deluxe Upgrade is the correct product.

Can the original Switch version run on Switch 2?

Yes. Nintendo’s compatibility section for the original Switch game says it is supported on Switch 2 and that game behaviour is consistent with Nintendo Switch. This lets a Switch-version owner play that same version on newer hardware without buying a Final Fantasy Resonance Switch upgrade.

That should not be confused with owning the dedicated Switch 2 edition. Running the Switch version through compatibility keeps you on the Switch software, which is why the store can simultaneously say it works on Switch 2 and that there is no upgrade pack to the separate Switch 2 product.

What should you buy if you own Switch 2?

If you already own Switch 2 and have no need to run the game on an original Switch, buying the dedicated Switch 2 version avoids the Final Fantasy Resonance Switch upgrade problem entirely. It also means any compatible Deluxe DLC you buy will be tied to the same version from the start.

If you need one copy that can run as the original Switch release across both generations, the Switch version remains an option because Nintendo marks it as compatible with Switch 2. The trade-off is that Nintendo does not offer save transfer into the dedicated Switch 2 game later.

The safest approach is to ignore the similar product names and check the system line on the store page before payment. A Final Fantasy Resonance Switch upgrade does not currently exist, save data does not cross between the two versions, and the Digital Deluxe Upgrade is a content pack rather than a hardware upgrade. The missing Final Fantasy Resonance Switch upgrade path is therefore something to plan around before you choose a version. For now, a Final Fantasy Resonance Switch upgrade cannot be used to move the purchase or save into the dedicated Switch 2 edition.
