RuneScape 4 Ashenfall is the confirmed starting region for Jagex’s new MMORPG. RS4 is set in Gielinor during the Sixth Age and begins on the continent first explored in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, but the new game takes place years later after the destruction of Dragon Queen Kuldra.
That time jump is the key to understanding RuneScape 4 Ashenfall. Jagex is not simply importing Dragonwilds’ current survival map into a MMO. Time has passed, the world has moved on and Ashenfall has changed before the new story begins.
Where is RuneScape 4 Ashenfall?

Jagex describes Ashenfall as a landmass to the north-east of Gielinor. Dragonwilds introduced players to the continent as a dangerous survival setting shaped by dragons, Anima and the campaign against Kuldra.
RuneScape 4 Ashenfall keeps that shared geography but uses a later era. This gives returning Dragonwilds players recognisable history while leaving room for settlements, environments and political conditions to be very different.
When does RuneScape 4 Ashenfall take place?
RS4 takes place years after the events of Dragonwilds and the destruction of Dragon Queen Kuldra. Jagex has not given an exact number of years, so any precise time gap is currently speculation.
The new MMO remains in the Sixth Age. That places RuneScape 4 Ashenfall within the broader RuneScape timeline without requiring players to assume it begins at exactly the same moment as current RuneScape content.
Do you need to play Dragonwilds first?
Jagex has not said Dragonwilds is required homework for RS4. The new game is an independent experience and is intended to be another entry point into Gielinor. Dragonwilds players will recognise Ashenfall and Kuldra references, but newcomers should be able to learn the setting inside the new MMO.
Will RuneScape 4 stay in Ashenfall?
No, not according to Jagex’s ambition. The studio says Ashenfall is only the beginning and wants the adventure to grow far beyond it into familiar places players know and love as well as new locations and stories across Gielinor.
This makes RuneScape 4 Ashenfall a starting continent rather than a statement that the entire MMO is confined there forever. Expansion into mainland or familiar RuneScape regions is part of the vision, although no specific next zone has been announced.
How different could Ashenfall be?
Potentially very different. Dragonwilds already spans multiple regions and continues to evolve after Kuldra’s saga. A years-later MMO can show the consequences of those events without reproducing the survival game’s exact bases, resources or progression loops.
Jagex has not detailed cities, factions, quest hubs or travel systems for RuneScape 4 Ashenfall.
Will Dragonwilds choices affect RS4?
No transfer or choice-import system is announced. The games are independent experiences with separate development teams. Shared lore does not automatically mean your individual Dragonwilds world state becomes the canonical starting state of RS4.
That is especially important for RuneScape 4 Ashenfall because Dragonwilds supports personal worlds and co-op progression. Jagex would need to explain how those many player states connect to one MMO timeline before any carryover could be assumed.
Why start RuneScape 4 in Ashenfall?
Ashenfall gives Jagex a location that is already part of the modern RuneScape universe but is much less constrained by decades of classic MMO geography. It can introduce new players in a relatively fresh region before the adventure expands into iconic Gielinor locations.
RuneScape 4 Ashenfall therefore works as a bridge: familiar to Dragonwilds players, still RuneScape lore, but open enough for a new Unreal Engine MMO to establish its own identity before moving into older territory.
