ACE COMBAT 8 Difficulty Settings: Rookie, Pilot, Veteran and Elite

ACE COMBAT 8 Difficulty Settings

ACE COMBAT 8 Difficulty Settings give you four standard choices from the start: Rookie, Pilot, Veteran and Elite. Bandai Namco lets you change the campaign difficulty at any time, so picking the wrong setting at the beginning does not lock the entire save into a challenge level you no longer enjoy.

The differences become more important once you move beyond simply finishing the story. Veteran or higher is required for the 31 conditional enemy Aces, Elite is the route used to unlock Ace difficulty, and high-difficulty cleanup affects the S-rank and MRP grind. Controls are separate from difficulty, so Standard or Expert flight controls can be paired with whichever challenge setting you want.

Can you change ACE COMBAT 8 Difficulty Settings during the campaign?

Yes. Bandai Namco says ACE COMBAT 8 Difficulty Settings can be changed at any time. That makes it practical to start on Pilot, learn the new systems and move upward once your aircraft tree and flying confidence improve. The one thing to remember is that changing difficulty can affect whether a particular challenge or enemy is eligible to appear.

Flight control mode is a separate setting. Standard and Expert controls change how the aircraft responds to your stick inputs, while difficulty changes the challenge presented by enemies and missions. A player can therefore use Expert controls on Rookie or Standard controls on Elite if that combination feels right.

Why Veteran matters in ACE COMBAT 8 Difficulty Settings

Among the ACE COMBAT 8 Difficulty Settings, Veteran is the first setting where the 31 conditional enemy Aces used by ACE COMBAT 8 Assault Records can appear. Their mission-specific triggers do not override the difficulty requirement. If you are hunting an Ace and nothing appears despite meeting the condition, confirm the sortie is set to Veteran, Elite or Ace before assuming the trigger is broken.

Veteran also starts asking more of your defensive flying. Bandai warns that enemies may be more aggressive, missile locks can be tougher to break and damage recovery can depend more heavily on your loadout. That makes parts, special weapons and target order more meaningful than they are on an easier story-focused run.

Elite, Ace and post-game ACE COMBAT 8 Difficulty Settings

Elite is the top standard option shown in the initial settings menu. Completing the campaign on Elite unlocks Ace difficulty, which then becomes the real end-game challenge for players chasing the hardest campaign trophy requirements. Ace of Aces requires S ranks across the numbered campaign on Ace difficulty, with Free Mission available for cleaning up individual sorties.

Higher difficulty also becomes useful for MRP farming because campaign payouts scale with difficulty. That does not mean you should force Ace before your hangar is ready. A clean, fast clear on a setting you can handle is more productive than repeatedly failing a theoretically richer run.

Which ACE COMBAT 8 Difficulty Settings should you choose first?

Rookie is the sensible choice if you mainly want the story or are struggling with terrain and collision damage. Pilot is the best default for most newcomers because it is deliberately tuned as the balanced starting point. Veteran is ideal if you already understand ACE COMBAT dogfighting and want conditional Ace encounters available immediately. Elite is for a first run built around challenge or a deliberate path toward unlocking Ace difficulty.

The best ACE COMBAT 8 Difficulty Settings choice is therefore tied to what you are doing on that run. Story progression, Assault Records, S ranks and MRP do not all reward the same approach, and the game gives you enough flexibility to change the setting instead of forcing one difficulty to serve every goal.

ACE COMBAT 8 Difficulty Settings are especially flexible during post-game cleanup. You can use Veteran for named Ace hunting, move to Elite while learning tougher mission patterns, then tackle Ace once your aircraft tree, special weapons and route knowledge are ready. Changing the setting for a specific objective is part of the progression rather than a sign that the original choice was wrong.
