How many missions are in the ACE COMBAT 8 Mission List?
There are 31 campaign sorties in the ACE COMBAT 8 Mission List when the Prologue is included. Mission 30 is the final numbered mission. The campaign uses autosave rather than manual save slots, so individual mission cleanup is handled later through Free Mission instead of by keeping a stack of saves before each sortie.
Mission 14, Two on the Run, is the unusual entry in the ACE COMBAT 8 Mission List. It puts you into an unarmed A-6 Intruder and keeps that restriction even in Free Mission. Other campaign limitations, including carrier-only aircraft on certain sorties and back-to-back missions that keep you in the same aircraft, are largely removed when you replay through Free Mission.
Free Mission and the ACE COMBAT 8 Mission List
Free Mission turns the ACE COMBAT 8 Mission List into a replayable checklist after you clear the campaign once. Ace difficulty is another post-campaign layer. It unlocks after completing the campaign on Elite, and the demanding Ace of Aces trophy asks for S ranks across the numbered campaign on Ace difficulty. Free Mission is valuable here because it lets you tailor the plane, parts and special weapon to one sortie at a time instead of respecting every campaign continuity restriction.
Important missions in the ACE COMBAT 8 Mission List
Mission 4, The Fall of the Numbered Fleets, is an early example of a mission with an optional medal objective. Mission 7 is built around the returning Annihilation Battle format. Mission 14 is the forced A-6 sortie. Mission 18 contains the Shadow 24 kill that can affect a later Assault Record, and Mission 28 is the standout replay mission for players farming MRP because of its high target density and Cima Island rearming.

Can anything in the ACE COMBAT 8 Mission List be permanently missed?
The important launch-day answer is no for the main completion goals. Mission medals, Assault Records and S ranks can be cleaned up through Free Mission after the campaign. Conditional Aces require Veteran difficulty or higher, and you still need to finish the mission after taking one down for the record to count, but a missed trigger does not force you to erase your save or restart from scratch.
The ACE COMBAT 8 Mission List therefore doubles as the post-game roadmap. Finish the story once, unlock Free Mission, then revisit individual sorties for medals, Aces, S ranks and MRP instead of grinding the whole campaign every time you miss one condition.
