Fallout 76 Max Pet Level is level 200 in the current World Pets Public Test Server build. Reaching that cap is a long progression track rather than a short companion unlock, with health, damage, carry capacity, passive upgrades and account rewards spread across the levels.
Level 200 is a PTS value and can still change before the live World Pets update. The useful part today is understanding the milestone structure and why you do not need to hit the cap before a pet becomes useful.
Fallout 76 Max Pet Level: current cap and milestones

| Current PTS cap | Level 200 |
| First passive | Level 5 |
| Second passive | Level 20 |
| Passive upgrades | Levels 40, 60, 85 and 120 |
| Other progression | Health, damage, carry capacity and reward track |
The level cap sits well above the major passive milestones. That means Fallout 76 Max Pet Level is not a requirement before the Dog, Cat, Radhog or Deathclaw starts contributing useful species bonuses.
Use Fallout 76 Pet Leveling for the XP system itself. The max-level page is about progression planning rather than trying to turn every activity into a level-200 grind.
What improves before level 200
Health and damage scale through the progression, player carry-capacity buffs unlock and improve, and pet passives gain stronger stages. Bethesda also puts rewards such as Atoms, Caps and Player Titles on the track.
Because carry capacity and XP rates were already retuned during September testing, treat the shape of the progression as more reliable than an old screenshot showing one exact numeric bonus.
When the important passive upgrades happen
The current PTS unlocks passives at levels 5 and 20, then improves them at 40, 60, 85 and 120. Those are the practical breakpoints for deciding whether a species is already doing the job you chose it for.
A Cat aimed at fishing, a Dog aimed at Grunt Hunts and a Deathclaw aimed at Infestations can all be useful before Fallout 76 Max Pet Level is reached. The Fallout 76 Best Pet comparison explains why activity matters more than the cap.
Does pet progression reset when you change skins?
No, progression is per species in the current design. A different Dog skin shares Dog progression. Swapping to a Cat, Radhog or Deathclaw moves to that species’ progression track instead.
The PTS is also showing an account-wide progression behavior that Bethesda lists as a known issue or UI mismatch. See Fallout 76 Pet Levels Account Wide before assuming that account behavior is final.
Should you grind to 200 on the PTS?
Only if you are testing the system and want to give useful feedback. PTS progress does not carry into the live game, so grinding purely for permanent rewards would miss the point of the test environment.
For Fallout 76 Max Pet Level, the sensible PTS goal is to test milestones, passives and XP behavior, especially after Bethesda changes the rates, rather than treating the test server like permanent live progression.
What happens on the way to Fallout 76 Max Pet Level?
The current Fallout 76 Max Pet Level remains 200 on the PTS. You don’t need to hit the maximum before your pet becomes useful: passive unlocks, carrying bonuses and other progression rewards arrive as the species levels. The October 15 test build adds clearer claim notifications and an XP progress bar, so check the Pip-Boy’s Pets progression screen for rewards earned along the way.
Bethesda also allows unlocked passives to be selected across different species in the new PTS version. Reaching a higher level on one species can therefore improve the buffs available while travelling with another pet. The level limit and reward structure are still test-server details rather than an unconditional promise for the eventual release.
