Fallout 76 Pet Leveling currently works by having a summoned pet bank XP and collect that bank when your character earns XP, with an extra pet-XP bonus from kills in the Public Test Server build.
The progression belongs to a pet species rather than one cosmetic variant. Leveling a German Shepherd, for example, levels the Dog species so another Dog variant can use the same species progression.
Fallout 76 Pet Leveling: current PTS rules

Fallout 76 Pet Leveling Image Bethesda Game Studios.
| Max level | 200 |
| XP collection | Pet banks XP and collects it when the player earns XP |
| Kill bonus | Current PTS adds extra pet XP on kills |
| Rested pet | Freshly rested pets earn more XP for the first few hours |
| Species progression | Shared across variants of the same species |
Keep the pet summoned while doing activities that already generate player XP. That makes Fallout 76 XP Farm relevant to Fallout 76 Pet Leveling without requiring a separate pet-only activity loop.
Bethesda changed the XP system during testing, so older screenshots or early PTS guides can show a progression rate that no longer matches the latest build.
What levels unlock
Pet levels raise health and damage, improve player carry-capacity bonuses and unlock or strengthen pet passives. The current passive milestones begin at level 5 and 20, then improve again at 40, 60, 85 and 120.
The hard cap is covered separately in Fallout 76 Max Pet Level, while the exact species rewards are easier to compare in Fallout 76 Pet Passives.
Do you level every pet skin separately?
No. Bethesda says progression is per species. That means changing from one Dog variant to another does not require rebuilding the Dog progression from level 1. The same idea applies to the species system rather than individual cosmetic versions.
Do not extend that statement to different species. Dog, Cat, Radhog and Deathclaw progression are separate tracks even if several variants exist inside one species.
Rested Pet XP
Freshly rested pets receive better XP for the first few hours of the day in the current system. The pet progression interface includes a rested indicator so you can tell when that bonus state is active.
For efficient Fallout 76 Pet Leveling, use the rested window on high-XP activities you were going to do anyway, then let ordinary event and quest XP keep moving the bar after the rested bonus is gone.
Pet XP looks stuck
Bethesda has listed inconsistent Pet XP as a current PTS known issue. If the bar is not moving as expected, read Fallout 76 Pet XP Not Working before changing every setting. The pet must be summoned, but a genuine test-server bug can still interrupt correct play.
Because this is a PTS system, report reproducible problems with the exact pet species, activity and progression level rather than assuming the launch version will behave identically.
Fallout 76 Pet Leveling in the October PTS
For Fallout 76 Pet Leveling, the October 15 build adds a Pet XP progress bar and a notification when a reward is available. Open the Pets section of your Pip-Boy to see progression, claim earned rewards and monitor the experience needed for the next level. Bethesda also displays the number of available rewards in the progression menu, which makes it easier to notice missed claims.
Pet progression is still being tested ahead of release. If XP appears delayed, compare the progression menu with the notification bar after your next experience-earning activity. The PTS information is useful for understanding how levelling works, but Bethesda may change earning rates before launch.
