ACE COMBAT 8 Multiplayer: Modes, Progression and Player Counts

ACE COMBAT 8 multiplayer is built around ACE COMBAT ONLINE, a separate online career with its own progression and save data. The mode uses an Air Base lobby that can host up to 100 players, while the core Co-Op Assault and Co-Op Warfare activities use two teams of four pilots. Special missions, limited-time PvP events and crossplay expand the online structure beyond those two headline modes.

ACE COMBAT 8 multiplayer is playable across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on Steam through crossplay. The Air Base is where you meet pilots and prepare your online career, but its 100-player capacity isn’t the number of jets in one match. The actual sortie sizes range from four to eight, depending on whether you select Scramble, a Co-Op contest or Emergency Sortie.

ACE COMBAT 8 multiplayer is separate from Campaign

Bandai Namco describes online as its own experience with separate progression and save data from Campaign Mode. Players begin as mercenary pilots and build rank, aircraft access and rewards through online sorties.

In ACE COMBAT 8 multiplayer, buying an aircraft in Campaign does not automatically add it to your online hangar. Earn aircraft through online rewards, then develop them through sorties. Choose aircraft roles that suit the mission: fighters for aerial threats, attack aircraft for surface targets and multirole jets for mixed objectives.

The Air Base supports up to 100 players

The Air Base acts as the social and matchmaking hub. Up to 100 players can occupy a base, use facilities, chat, launch missions and spend time in areas such as the arcade, jukebox, supply shop and training mode.

The two core modes revealed first are Co-Op Assault and Co-Op Warfare. ACE COMBAT 8 multiplayer uses teams of four in both, but the objectives are very different. Assault is built around PvE score competition, while Warfare mixes two player squads with active land, sea and air NPC forces in a PvPvE battlefield.

Co-Op Assault and Co-Op Warfare: eight-player rules

Co-Op Assault uses two teams of four competing for score while fighting PvE enemies. Co-Op Warfare also uses two teams of four but adds direct competition between squads alongside allied and enemy NPC forces.

ACE COMBAT 8 multiplayer can also trigger special sorties after regular Co-Op Assault or Warfare matches. Scramble puts four pilots against an elite NPC squad, while Emergency Sortie sends eight against a superweapon. These missions are not guaranteed to appear after every match, so watch for the offers when you return to the Air Base.

Scramble and Emergency Sortie: special missions

Scramble and Emergency Sortie can appear after standard missions. Scramble sends four players against a powerful NPC rival squad, while Emergency Sortie can bring eight pilots together against large iconic threats from the series.

ACE COMBAT 8 multiplayer uses a Threat Level system during competitive sorties. As your score and performance improve, your threat rating can rise; at three stars you become an Ace Aircraft. A high rating increases the reward potential but makes you a more valuable target for enemy pilots, so coordinating defensive cover with your team matters.

Team Deathmatch and Free-for-All PvP events

Bandai Namco also confirms limited time PvP events, including 4v4 Team Deathmatch and eight player Free For All. These are event content rather than the two permanent core mission types described on the online page.

Crossplay connects PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC players in the online environment. ACE COMBAT 8 multiplayer groups can therefore form across the supported launch platforms instead of being limited to one console family. Crossplay still depends on the normal online account and service requirements for each platform.

Online progression

Aircraft must be earned within the online career even if the same aircraft exists in Campaign Mode. Aircraft gain levels by surviving sorties, and players can customize skins, emblems and weathering while climbing mercenary ranks.

Progression continues through mercenary rank and the Ace Pass. ACE COMBAT 8 multiplayer sorties contribute to seasonal rewards, while the Premium Ace Pass adds more unlocks. Campaign players can ignore that structure if they want, because the online save is separate rather than forcing the seasonal track into the story mode.

For ACE COMBAT 8 multiplayer, start in the Air Base and select the mode that fits your group. Four friends can fill one team in the standard eight-player matches, while Scramble is built for four pilots cooperating against AI. Check limited-time PvP and special mission availability in-game, rather than expecting every announced event to remain active every day.
