Perplexity Portable Computer requirements are unusually demanding for a Windows AI app: Perplexity says local inference needs a supported NVIDIA RTX GPU with 24GB of VRAM or more. That single number rules out most gaming PCs, including plenty of very fast newer cards.
The confusing part is that the requirement is about dedicated graphics memory, not ordinary system RAM. A desktop with 64GB of RAM and an RTX 5080 still falls below the published VRAM threshold, while an older RTX 3090 reaches it. This guide turns the announcement into a practical compatibility check for gaming-PC owners.
Perplexity Portable Computer requirements

The current Perplexity Portable Computer requirements published by Perplexity are straightforward at the headline level. On Windows, you need a supported NVIDIA RTX GPU with at least 24GB of VRAM. The available local model on Windows RTX PCs is PPLX 27B, and Perplexity says only one local model runs at a time.
| Requirement | Current Windows requirement |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows PC |
| GPU | Supported NVIDIA RTX GPU |
| Dedicated GPU memory | 24GB VRAM or higher |
| Local model | PPLX 27B |
| Qwen 3.8 27B on Windows RTX | Not currently available |
| Subscription | Perplexity Pro or Max |
| Cloud access | Optional for steps needing the web or frontier reasoning |
Perplexity also supports NVIDIA DGX Spark and Linux systems, but this article focuses on normal Windows gaming PCs. The company says Windows users should start with Personal Computer for Windows and then enable PPLX 27B local inference in Settings on supported hardware.
Which RTX GPUs meet the Perplexity Portable Computer requirements?
For consumer GeForce desktop cards, the 24GB floor leaves a very short list. NVIDIA specifies 24GB of VRAM for the RTX 3090, RTX 3090 Ti and RTX 4090, while the RTX 5090 has 32GB. Those cards therefore clear the published memory threshold.
| GPU | VRAM | Clears 24GB VRAM floor? |
|---|---|---|
| GeForce RTX 3090 | 24GB GDDR6X | Yes |
| GeForce RTX 3090 Ti | 24GB GDDR6X | Yes |
| GeForce RTX 4090 | 24GB GDDR6X | Yes |
| GeForce RTX 5090 | 32GB GDDR7 | Yes |
| GeForce RTX 5080 | 16GB GDDR7 | No |
| GeForce RTX 4080 / 4080 SUPER | 16GB GDDR6X | No |
| GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER | 16GB GDDR6X | No |
| GeForce RTX 3080 Ti | 12GB GDDR6X | No |
| GeForce RTX 3080 | 10GB or 12GB GDDR6X | No |
| GeForce RTX 3060 | Up to 12GB GDDR6 | No |
There is an important caveat. Perplexity describes the requirement as a supported RTX GPU with 24GB of VRAM or higher rather than publishing a complete card-by-card compatibility list. Clearing the memory threshold is therefore necessary, but it should not be treated as a guarantee that every unusual workstation, OEM or mobile configuration is officially recognised.
NVIDIA confirms the relevant desktop memory capacities on its RTX 3090 family, RTX 4090 and RTX 5090 specifications.
Does the RTX 5090 Laptop GPU qualify?
The RTX 5090 Laptop GPU is the main mobile exception worth watching. NVIDIA lists it with 24GB of GDDR7, so it reaches the published Perplexity Portable Computer requirements on memory alone. The RTX 5080 Laptop GPU has 16GB, so it does not.
However, Perplexity has not published a definitive laptop-GPU support list. An RTX 5090 laptop is therefore best described as memory-qualified on paper, not guaranteed compatible. Anyone buying a very expensive laptop specifically for Portable Computer should confirm support inside the current Windows app first.
Can system RAM replace 24GB of VRAM?
No. The published Perplexity Portable Computer requirements explicitly call for 24GB of VRAM on a supported RTX GPU. Adding more normal system memory does not change how much dedicated memory is physically available to the graphics processor.
That means 32GB, 64GB or 128GB of system RAM cannot turn a 16GB RTX 5080 into a qualifying 24GB card. System RAM can still matter for the rest of the workload, but it does not satisfy Perplexity’s stated GPU-memory minimum.
Why does Portable Computer need 24GB of VRAM?
Perplexity has not published a detailed memory-budget explanation for the 24GB figure, so it would be misleading to claim an exact number of gigabytes for model weights, context or agent overhead. What the company does confirm is that Windows RTX systems run the PPLX 27B model locally, while the agent harness, orchestrator, planner and tool routing are part of the local-first system.
The safest conclusion is that the 24GB figure is Perplexity’s current supported floor for running that local setup reliably. The Perplexity Portable Computer requirements may change later as models, quantisation, drivers or hardware support improve, so the official product page should remain the final compatibility check.
Does Portable Computer keep your work local?
Portable Computer is designed to complete as much work locally as possible. Perplexity says the orchestrator, planner, tool router, scheduler, durable task queue and local search index can run on device, alongside the local model. Work handled by local models has no per-credit charge.
It is still a local-first system rather than a permanently offline one. When a task needs current web information or stronger frontier-model reasoning, the orchestrator can ask for approval before sending that step to a cloud model. Web searches and connected online services also require network access by definition.
Do you need a Perplexity subscription?
Yes. Perplexity currently says Portable Computer is available to Pro and Max subscribers. Meeting the Perplexity Portable Computer requirements does not unlock the feature by itself; you still need an eligible Perplexity account and the current Windows application.
If the naming is confusing, our Perplexity Portable Computer vs Personal Computer guide explains how the local-first option relates to the standard Windows agent.
Can your gaming PC run Perplexity Portable Computer?
For most gaming PCs, not yet. The Perplexity Portable Computer requirements currently make dedicated GPU memory the biggest hurdle. Desktop RTX 3090, 3090 Ti, 4090 and 5090 cards clear the published 24GB VRAM floor, while the RTX 5080 and most mainstream GeForce cards do not.
That produces the unusual situation where an older RTX 3090 can meet the memory requirement while a much newer RTX 5080 cannot. Before spending money on hardware, check the official Perplexity Portable Computer page because Perplexity can expand or change its supported-hardware list as the product develops.
