Diablo 4 Switch 2 Cross-Progression: How Saves Carry Over

Diablo 4 Switch 2 Cross-Progression is supported through Battle.net, allowing you to access your Diablo IV progress across supported platforms when the correct accounts are linked. Blizzard also confirms in its official Switch 2 FAQ that Nintendo Switch Online is not required for cross-progression.

That makes the Switch 2 port far more useful for established players. You can pick up an existing roster on Nintendo hardware instead of treating the new version as a clean save, although owning the game on another platform does not give you a free Switch 2 licence.

How Diablo 4 Switch 2 Cross-Progression works

Diablo 4 Switch 2 Cross-Progression uses your Battle.net identity rather than a manual save-file transfer. When the Nintendo account is linked to the Battle.net account that already owns your Diablo IV progression, the supported server-backed data becomes available on Switch 2.

There is no USB export, cloud-save copy or one-time migration tool to run. The most important setup step is simply making sure you link the Nintendo account to the same Battle.net identity you already use on your other platform.

Nintendo Switch Online is not required

Diablo 4 Switch 2 Cross-Progression does not need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Blizzard separates progression syncing from crossplay: the former works through Battle.net, while the latter requires the Nintendo subscription.

This means you can access your existing progress, play supported solo content and continue building the same character without paying for NSO. You only need the membership when you want the multiplayer features that involve other online players.

For that separate requirement, see our Nintendo Switch Online breakdown.

What happens to cosmetics and Battle Pass rewards

Diablo 4 Switch 2 Cross-Progression also covers more than character levels. Blizzard says cosmetics purchased or earned on Switch 2 are available across linked platforms. Reliquary Battle Pass purchases and rewards follow the same rule.

That is useful if Switch 2 becomes a secondary way to play rather than your only platform. Earning or buying a cosmetic while portable does not strand it on Nintendo hardware as long as you are using the correctly linked Battle.net ecosystem.

The important Platinum exception

Diablo 4 Switch 2 Cross-Progression has one currency detail worth reading twice. Platinum earned through gameplay, including Platinum earned through the Battle Pass, carries over between platforms. Platinum purchased directly on Nintendo Switch 2 stays available only on Nintendo Switch 2.

That platform-wallet restriction is exactly the sort of thing that can surprise a multi-platform player. If you buy Platinum on Switch 2 and then open Diablo IV on another system, do not expect that purchased balance to appear there. Earned Platinum is treated differently according to Blizzard’s FAQ.

Cross-progression is not cross-buy

Diablo 4 Switch 2 Cross-Progression does not grant a Nintendo copy of the game because you already own Diablo IV elsewhere. Platform licences remain separate. You need the Switch 2 Age of Hatred Collection to play on Nintendo hardware even though the Battle.net progression can follow you.

The good news is that the Switch 2 collection includes the base game, Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred, so new Nintendo buyers are not starting with only the 2023 base package while their existing character has access to later expansion content elsewhere.

Our Age of Hatred Collection guide explains exactly what is included in the Switch 2 package.

Set up the account before you panic about missing characters

Diablo 4 Switch 2 Cross-Progression works only as well as the account link behind it. Before launching on Switch 2, check which Battle.net account currently owns the characters you care about. Linking a different Blizzard account can make the roster look empty even though the original characters are still safe on the original account.

If you are specifically moving an old roster, our character transfer guide walks through the account-first approach. Think “access the same Battle.net progression,” not “copy a save from one machine to another.”

Diablo 4 Switch 2 Cross-Progression is one of the strongest reasons to consider the port as a companion version. Your progress can follow you, NSO is not required for that syncing, and most account-based rewards travel too. Just remember the two limits: platform licences are still bought separately, and Platinum purchased on Switch 2 remains in the Switch 2 wallet.
