Diablo 5 Caravan System replaces the traditional network of safe towns with a moving settlement that travels through fallen Sanctuary alongside the player. Diablo has already won, functioning communities have largely collapsed, and Blizzard wants your group of survivors to become the safe place rather than repeatedly discovering untouched cities.
Why are there no traditional towns?
The world premise drives the Diablo 5 Caravan System. Diablo has controlled and devastated huge parts of Sanctuary, while surviving humans have been corrupted, imprisoned or forced into hiding.
Dropping a cheerful blacksmith, healer and stash into a perfectly safe settlement every few miles would undermine that premise. Blizzard instead wants safety to feel rare and personal.
How the caravan works
The Diablo 5 Caravan System is a mobile hub populated by merchants, craftspeople, companions and survivors recruited throughout the campaign.
As the Heir to Westmarch finds people who can still resist Diablo, the caravan grows with them. Services therefore come from characters you have actually brought into the group rather than interchangeable NPCs waiting in different towns. Diablo 5 Caravan System makes progression through Sanctuary partly visible through the people and expertise travelling beside you.

Does the caravan replace every hub?
That is the current design direction, but Diablo V is still early in development. Blizzard specifically described the caravan as replacing traditional functioning towns and permanent safe zones.
It is safer to describe the Diablo 5 Caravan System as the main travelling settlement rather than promise there will never be a fixed story location, fortress or temporary refuge anywhere in the finished game.
Who can join the caravan?
Blizzard has already teased a former Sister of the Sightless Eye and a stranded Treasure Goblin among the survivors travelling with the player.
The Treasure Goblin is particularly odd because greed means something very different after civilisation collapses. Blizzard wants these recurring companions to have reasons for joining and personal stories that develop instead of existing only as vending machines.
Side quests come from the caravan
The Diablo 5 Caravan System also changes how side quests are delivered. With fewer ordinary civilians standing around the countryside, side content comes from the people travelling with you.
That gives Blizzard an opportunity to make optional stories continue across the journey. A craftsperson or survivor can ask for help because you already know them, then react to what happens later. It also means optional quests can deepen the same small survivor community instead of introducing a disposable quest giver you never see again.
Is it like Diablo II’s Rogue Encampment?
Blizzard has explicitly used the Rogue Encampment feeling as a reference point: a small pocket of humanity surviving while darkness surrounds it.
The difference is movement. Diablo 5 Caravan System effectively puts that fragile encampment on the road, carrying its people and services deeper into territory controlled by Diablo.
Is this copying Path of Exile 2?
The comparison is inevitable because Path of Exile 2 also uses a travelling caravan during part of its campaign. Blizzard’s reasoning, however, is tied directly to Diablo V’s fallen-Sanctuary premise and the desire to make recurring survivors more important.
Similar hub concepts do not automatically mean the progression, crafting, story structure or movement rules work the same way.
How does the caravan connect to Terror Forming?
The overworld can procedurally change through Terror Forming, with Diablo and his Dread Commanders reshaping regions between visits.
A moving hub fits that Diablo 5 Caravan System perfectly. The safe zone travels because the hostile world itself refuses to stay comfortably static.
Will the caravan be customizable?
Blizzard has not confirmed player housing, cosmetic caravan upgrades or a base-building interface. The only safe promise today is that the caravan grows as survivors join and provides services through those people.
Those unanswered systems are exactly the kind of detail Blizzard can expand on during its regular development updates beginning in 2027.
Why the caravan matters
Diablo 5 Caravan System is more than a menu redesign. It supports the story Blizzard is telling: the world has lost, permanent safety has collapsed, and the small group travelling with the Heir to Westmarch is trying to create something worth protecting.
If Blizzard delivers on that idea, returning to the hub should feel less like visiting a shopping centre and more like checking on the people who survived the journey with you.
