Diablo 5 Plague Knight is the first completely new class Blizzard has confirmed for Diablo V, and its core fantasy is already wonderfully unpleasant. Blizzard describes the class as heavily armored “walking death” that moves through the battlefield spreading disease and pestilence, then consumes that corruption to empower itself.
What is the Plague Knight?
Diablo 5 Plague Knight is not simply a renamed Necromancer or another version of the Crusader. Blizzard introduced it during the Diablo V: Forging the Next Era panel as a brand-new class created specifically for the sequel.
The visual and gameplay pitch is a durable armored warrior surrounded by sickness. Rather than summoning an undead army or relying on holy shields, the Plague Knight infects enemies and turns the diseases it creates into a resource.

How does the Plague Knight play?
The basic Diablo 5 Plague Knight loop is spread disease first, then consume it for power. That immediately suggests a rhythm where applying effects across several enemies prepares a stronger follow-up instead of every ability existing as an isolated attack.
Blizzard has not shown a complete skill tree, resource globe or final rotation yet. Any named ability list circulating this early should therefore be treated carefully unless it comes directly from a later developer update.
What abilities have been confirmed?
No individual Diablo 5 Plague Knight skill names have been officially published yet. The confirmed mechanics are broader: disease, pestilence, heavy armor and consuming those afflictions to gain power.
That still tells us a fair amount about the intended class identity. Area infection should matter, durable positioning should matter, and the payoff comes after enemies have already been afflicted rather than from one immediate burst button.

Is the Plague Knight a tank?
Diablo 5 Plague Knight is described as heavily armored, but Blizzard has not called it a traditional MMO tank. Diablo is an action RPG, so durability normally supports aggressive solo combat rather than a fixed threat-management role.
Heavy armor should make the class feel more planted than the returning Demon Hunter, while the disease system gives it a very different damage identity from the Monk. The important unknown is whether that armor translates into passive toughness, defensive skills or simply the visual fantasy of a knight built to stand inside infected packs.
Does it use poison damage?
Blizzard’s public wording focuses on disease and pestilence rather than locking the Diablo 5 Plague Knight to one final damage type. Poison would be an obvious thematic fit, but the sequel is still early enough that specific damage tags, scaling rules and status interactions can change.
It is safer to say the class spreads disease than to promise every plague will count as Poison in the finished 2029 game.
What weapons will the Plague Knight use?
Blizzard has not confirmed the full weapon list. The concept art and heavily armored fantasy point toward close-range equipment, but Diablo V’s item system is still being built and the studio has not published class-specific weapon restrictions.
That makes weapon speculation one of the details worth leaving alone until Blizzard shows actual Diablo 5 Plague Knight gameplay.
How is it different from the Demon Hunter and Monk?
The Demon Hunter returns with twin crossbows, mobility and attacks from the shadows. The Monk returns with martial-arts combat and holy power. Diablo 5 Plague Knight fills a darker, heavier space between those two revealed classes.
Its defining mechanic is not simply melee combat. The important distinction is creating disease across the battlefield and then consuming it for a payoff.
Will the Plague Knight be available at launch?
Yes. Blizzard presented the Plague Knight alongside Demon Hunter and Monk as part of Diablo V’s playable class lineup on the road to Spring 2029.
Those three are only the beginning. Blizzard says more classes will be revealed during development, with regular Diablo V updates planned from 2027 onward.
What we still need to see
The biggest unanswered questions are the actual skill tree, class resource, weapons, mobility options, endgame builds and exactly what consuming disease does to enemies and the player.
Diablo 5 Plague Knight already has a much clearer identity than most classes shown nearly three years before release. Blizzard has nailed the fantasy; now we need to see whether spreading and consuming disease feels as nasty in combat as it sounds on paper.
