The Pokémon Winds and Waves main characters were shown during the February 2026 announcement, and their outfits are different depending on which game you choose. Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves arrive worldwide in 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, but the protagonists’ names and wider story cast haven’t been revealed.

The first trailer also introduces Browt, Pombon and Gecqua, alongside two special Pikachu. It’s a good start, although the game hasn’t yet shown a rival, Professor or major antagonist. Here’s what the official material actually tells us about the playable characters and their companions.

Who are the Pokémon Winds and Waves main characters?

The Pokémon Winds and Waves main characters are the player-controlled protagonists shown in the promotional artwork. The official website says you’ll become the lead character of the adventure and that your outfit depends on your chosen version.

That gives us two visible starting looks, but no confirmed protagonist names, separate stories or details about the characters’ backgrounds. The first pictures aren’t a full character-customisation menu.

The table covers only what has been revealed. A costume difference doesn’t automatically mean different storylines or playable abilities.

Are the main characters different between versions?

Pokémon has confirmed version-specific clothing. The character outfit in Pokémon Winds differs from the one shown for Pokémon Waves, making this the first explicit version difference.

The announcement doesn’t establish that the two games have different protagonists or an exclusive cast of story characters. Our version comparison has the other confirmed differences and unanswered questions.

For now, the Pokémon Winds and Waves main characters are presented as the player’s own adventure character, with clothing that changes between the two versions.

Can you customise the Pokémon Winds and Waves main characters?

A complete clothing or hairstyle customisation system hasn’t been explained. It’s not yet known whether additional outfits can be unlocked, whether you can change the default look or whether the other version’s clothes are obtainable.

Previous Pokémon games have included customisation options, but that history doesn’t prove any particular system for the new release. Pokémon has only confirmed the different initial clothing.

Do the protagonists have names?

No official names have been revealed for the Pokémon Winds and Waves main characters. The announcement focuses on the player’s role and their appearance rather than giving biographies or voice-actor details.

There isn’t a confirmed list of alternative playable characters either. Claims about names, relationships or separate character powers need an official source before being treated as genuine.

Who is the rival or the Professor?

The reveal hasn’t introduced a named rival, regional Pokémon Professor or main antagonist. We also don’t have a full lineup of companions or Gym Leaders.

Those characters are familiar parts of Pokémon stories, but nothing shown identifies them in Winds and Waves. It’s better to leave their roles open than attach invented names to background figures.

Which starter will the main character choose?

The Pokémon Winds and Waves main characters can begin their adventures with one of three new first partners: Browt, the Grass-type Bean Chick Pokémon; Pombon, the Fire-type Puppy Pokémon; or Gecqua, the Water-type Water Gecko Pokémon.

The official profiles confirm Overgrow for Browt, Blaze for Pombon and Torrent for Gecqua. Their evolutions haven’t been revealed, and none has been identified as a version-exclusive choice.

You can compare their personalities and sizes in our starter guide.

Who are Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu?

The two special Pikachu introduced in the announcement are Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu. Their appearances and names are official, but their story roles and whether they’re catchable remain unannounced.

They shouldn’t be mistaken for brand-new Pokémon species or confirmed playable protagonists. Our special Pikachu guide covers their reveal in more detail.

When will the rest of the cast be revealed?

Pokémon hasn’t scheduled another character reveal. Both games launch worldwide in 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2, but the exact date hasn’t been announced.

For now, the Pokémon Winds and Waves main characters have confirmed version-specific outfits, while their names and supporting cast remain a mystery. The release-date guide covers the launch details, and the official game website shows the original character artwork.
