The Long Dark Cauldron Island is reached by taking the Fulmar autopilot boat from Hibernia Processing docks in Desolation Point. The boat sails between Great Bear Island and Port Remnant, the entry point to Iron Road’s new Survival Mode region.
You’ll need Iron Road installed, but you won’t need to restart your Survival save. Hinterland confirms the Fulmar is available in both existing and new games. Cauldron Island isn’t a selectable starting region, so every new survivor still has to make the trip.
How to reach The Long Dark Cauldron Island
Hinterland identifies Hibernia Processing docks as the departure point. Here’s the route from Great Bear Island:
- Install The Long Dark’s Iron Road Early Access DLC.
- Load an existing Survival Mode save, or begin a new one on Great Bear Island.
- Travel to Desolation Point.
- Make your way to the Hibernia Processing docks.
- Find the Fulmar autopilot boat and follow the interaction prompts to travel to Port Remnant on Cauldron Island.
The Long Dark Cauldron Island is accessed through this boat connection, not through a new-game region selection. If you’re already playing Survival Mode, head for Desolation Point with your existing character.
Where is the Fulmar boat in Desolation Point?
Look for the boat at Hibernia Processing docks. Hinterland specifically names these docks in its support instructions. The Fulmar runs between Desolation Point and Port Remnant, so you can travel in either direction.
Hinterland says the journey comes at a cost and rewards preparation, but its public roadmap doesn’t specify the fare. Follow the boarding instructions in your current game rather than relying on a guessed resource requirement.
Can you return from The Long Dark Cauldron Island?
Yes. Hinterland explicitly describes the Fulmar as the link to and from Great Bear Island. It lets you take useful equipment and resources collected in the new expansion back to the main Survival Mode world. When you want to visit Cauldron again, the boat waits in Desolation Point.
This also means you’re free to bring useful equipment back from Cauldron Island. Hinterland hasn’t published a definitive list of baggage limits in its announcement.
Can you start a new game on Cauldron Island?
No. The Long Dark Cauldron Island isn’t a new-game starting region. Begin Survival Mode on Great Bear, reach Desolation Point and board the Fulmar at Hibernia Processing.
Your existing save is supported, though Early Access updates can bring bugs and balance changes. It’s worth making a backup of any long-running save where your platform permits it.
The Long Dark Cauldron Island missing: how to check the DLC
If there’s no boat at Hibernia Processing, check whether the DLC is properly installed. Hinterland says Steam normally installs Iron Road automatically after purchase, but it can be enabled manually if it hasn’t appeared.
- In Steam, right-click The Long Dark and choose Properties.
- Open the DLC tab.
- Check that The Long Dark: Iron Road is enabled.
- Allow Steam to finish downloading The Long Dark’s updates, then launch the game again.
You should see Iron Road branding on the main and Survival Mode menus once it is installed. If the game still shows no expansion branding, deal with that installation issue before trying to find the Fulmar.
The Long Dark Cauldron Island regions available now
At launch on 27 October 2026, the accessible area is Anna Island, including Port Remnant and the first approximately 30 km of railway. The complete Cauldron chain is planned to include Stella, Freya, Morag and Skye as well.
Hinterland describes hydraulic train bridges linking the islands as Early Access develops. Those further islands are not present day-one destinations. The Prototype Train is part of the Cauldron railway system, not a vehicle you can bring to Great Bear.
What should you bring when travelling by Fulmar?
The Long Dark Cauldron Island isn’t somewhere to arrive unprepared. Bring the food, water, clothing and survival equipment you’d normally want for an extended trip. Hinterland describes the boat journey as favouring prepared survivors, although it hasn’t provided a fixed packing list.
Among the useful finds on the new island is the Portable Whale-Oil Heater, which Hinterland confirms can be carried back to Great Bear. You can also explore the first train sections and look for wax-cylinder recordings as part of the McLeod mystery.
